I’m amazed how much athletes use Twitter. I don’t follow any OU or OSU athletes, but in pulling screen grabs for this video I noticed an almost non-stop stream of virtual conversation from Kenny Stills and the athletes he was tweeting with.

I also pulled an April video the NewsOK TV crew show of Justin Blackmon interviewing Ryan Broyles. It’s way more compelling that listening to me read tweets because you learn a little more about the personalities of those two very talented receivers. It’s at the end of the above video.

Texas Stadium implosion

Thousands of people watched as Texas Stadium was imploded around 7 am today. Some trivia for you (also known as worthless info): 2,715 pounds of dynamite was used, demolition of Texas Stadium cost about $6 million, the Dallas Cowboys won five Super Bowls with Texas Stadium as its home field.

I saw one game there: Emmitt Smith’s final home game as a Cowboy, a brutally cold Saturday night game. Michael Jordan was in town two nights later with the Wizards. A decent weekend of superstars past their prime.

The longtime home of the Dallas Cowboys — known for the giant hole in its roof, “so God can watch his team,” according to local lore — came tumbling down early Sunday in a planned demolition.

Fireworks shot off above the building for several minutes, then hundreds of fans counted down as 11-year-old Casey Rogers of nearby Terrell, the winner of an essay contest, pushed a button triggering the implosion. More than a ton of dynamite dropped the west side of the building toward the north, the east die toward the south and the roof right on top.

Something new for this football season, NewsOK Video is shooting The Oklahoman’s reporters before each OU and OSU game for a video we call “PreGame Snap.”

The idea is to post this video, send out an email, text alert and Twitter alert along with a link to our mobile site. Fans at the game can watch and listen to last minute and any breaking news updates from our sports guys.

Do You Know OU?

I taped three segments with OU women’s basketball star Whitney Hand this morning. The Oklahoman and NewsOK are sponsoring the segments that will play on the big screen during football games at Gaylord Memorial Stadium.

The “Do You Know OU?” segments will be about 60 seconds in running time and feature facts about OU that you may or may not know.

I met the Learfield Sports/Sooner Sports Properties crew at the Sam Noble Museum early this morning. Whitney and I first taped a segment in front of the Pentaceratops (glad Whitney got that line and not me). First taping took only 15 minutes so I only saw the dino portion of the museum. Looked pretty cool. They had to turn off the dino roars in the background for our taping.

From there we went to the stadium and the training room, which is below the stadium. After a wardrobe change, the crew had me in the Hydroworx, an oversized, fancy hot tub with a treadmill in the bottom. Whitney explained the benefits of this machine and how it helps athletes recover from injuries.

And then we marched onto the field to tape a segment on the Pride of Oklahoma. I wore a too-small jacket from the band, Whitney had on a hat.

Big props to the Learfield/Sooner Sports crew. They had their act together and were great to work with. All three tapings were wrapped up in about 90 minutes. Whitney did an amazing job of nailing her lines every time. She should think about broadcasting as a future after hoops. She’d be a natural.

Tour OSU’s new west end zone

NewsOK’s Damon Fontenot and Tim Money got in on an exclusive tour of Oklahoma State’s impressive new football facilities – the west end zone expansion at Boone Pickens Stadium. The Oklahoman’s sports staff spoke with OSU Sports Info guru Kevin Klintworth for a story and video.

Damon and Tim put together an awesome package. Notice the narrative tour as you visually move through the facility. It’s a nicely edited package that takes the time, over five minutes, to fully display what’s new and why it’s needed. But it doesn’t feel like a five minute package. Great use of music as transitions with multiple camera shots and variable speeds.

There is an awful lot of orange and black in this video, from the weight benches to the painted floors to the theatre/man cave to the stalls…

Speaking of stalls, Klintworth points out “Bullet,” OSU’s mascot will have probably the largest stall in the Big 12 Conference. NewsOK’s wisenheimer editors noted this is “Equine Extravagance.” Probably is.
