Downtown OKC’s Starlight Supper: Raising funds for Emerson Alternative School

I first caught wind of this event from Steve Lackmeyer’s blog, then proceeded to contact Gentry McKeown about access to cover the event. A wonderful night to attend an outdoor event – it had been freezing with ice and other horrors just two days prior. Downtown OKC posted on its Twitter account that over $10,000 was raised, proceeds go towards Emerson Alternative School. Pretty encouraging to see events like this downtown and the response from citizens to attend and contribute.

Bubbles and Joey’s Pizza

Met up with Casey Cornett at Joey’s Pizza in the Film Row district Wednesday night. Casey arranged the above interview with his boss, Brenda Jones of Jones PR Inc, and Jane Jenkins from Downtown OKC Inc.

Casey had spent much of Wednesday helping post bubbles across the downtown area. Brenda and Jane spoke about the campaign and the awareness it aims to achieve. Cool idea. Clean design.

Brenda has always been great to work with, and is great to interview. I don’t believe I had met Jane before, but she is also great on camera.

And then there’s the pizza. When Joey’s was on Classen just south of Cafe Antigua, it always ranked on my to-do list of places to grab a bite. But I never did.

Wednesday night, then, provided the perfect stage for a couple slices of pepperoni. Outstanding. Will definitely be back.

Festival of the Arts: Where do I park?

Steve Lackmeyer brought me the info, guided me through our archives for the appropriate photos and helped produce the above video. Should be helpful this week during the Festival of the Arts. There is a ton of construction downtown, it’s really not easy to navigate.

Ran downtown Monday evening to deliver a DVD to Good Egg Dining Group. We produce some of their multimedia campaigns. Saw the below skyline view from the AGE office on 5th Street. Snapped the pic via iPhone. Then drove down to Kerr to shoot the above video.

Also saw downtown business stringing up Christmas lights. It’s that time of year.

Skirvin

We worked on this video off and on over a two week period. Tony Thornton from Devon Energy got us terrace access, third floor of the Chase building that overlooks the Skirvin entrance, for the interview with authors Steve Lackmeyer and Jack Money, formerly of The Oklahoman.

We actually planned to do the entire shoot up there, but suffered equipment failure (batteries died).

The interview and standups were shot using the Canon 7D, capturing audio with the Zoom. A few days after the interview we shot the standup and we shot it a little earlier in the day. I wanted a “downtown street” feel and look. Note the cool red Viper in the background on some of the standups.

Also, I’m always amazed how many people work downtown. In fact we ran into The Oklahoman’s Jim Beckel on the interview shoot. He was carrying boots, headed to the Underground, where apparently there exists a cobbler. Who knew?

I read the book a couple weeks ago. Steve advanced me two PDFs. It’s a good read. The boys did a great job covering the time-line of Oklahoma City’s history as it related to the Skirvin. Or maybe how the Skirvin has changed as Oklahoma City has grown.

And of course I took a few iPhone pics too.
