Behind the scenes: producing BCS videos after the game

Last night, Oklahoma lost to Florida 24-14 in the BCS National Title game in Miami. David Jones and Paige Dillard met me in the OPUBCO Studios about 10 pm to watch the final mintues. The Oklahoman’s Mike Sherman sports editor came down to the 7th floor from the 8th to tape three segments.

I had three videos pre-produced: graphics and script. Paige pulled photos from The Oklahoman’s staffers in Miami ready for our videos. Jones prepared the studio for the three shoots.

We knocked out the first video, a post game show that lasted about five minutes talking about the game.

Then we rearranged the sets and taped two segments – one about Sooner coach Bob Stoops and quarterback Sam Bradford.

We finished taping around 11:30 pm. We record and edit using Final Cut Pro. We encode the FCP .mov files into .flv files using Adobe Flash Encoder. Exporting and encoding is by far the lengthiest part of the production.

We left the office two hours later after posting the videos and editing NewsOK.com and NewsOK.tv to properly display the videos.

Greatest American Dog visits Studio

Travis Brorsen and Presley – the Greatest American Dog – stopped by the Studios to record a Wimgo spot and a Pets podcast this afternoon.

While Travis spoke about Oklahoma and winning the Dog show, Presley sat patiently at his feet. Afterall, she is the Greatest American Dog.

The duo from Perry, Oklahoma, won the ABC summer reality show. Both were very down to earth and cool to work with.

We recently caught up with them in their hometown for a parade. Tanner Herriott and Paige Dillard captured the moments…

Moments… and cool video effects

Tanner Herriott forwarded me this video earlier today. It’s a church vid promoting a series, this one called “Moments.”

What’s interesting, at least to me, is how it was shot. The subjects appear on screen and on the screen behind them. And it appears to be projected against a flowing curtain, which creates a cool effect.

Tanner is editing our next Cold Case Oklahoma video – read more from Ken Raymond’s blog on our Cold Case stuff, it’s really good. Ken and Tanner and Paige do a great job with the Cold Case series, tying the video to the print while each telling the story in its own manner. Tanner is using a reverse image to illustrate the timeline in this case. He lit a piece of paper then reversed the image creating a film effect that’s far more compelling than the typical Final Cut Pro lower third.

Cold Case: Anyone in this town could be a murderer

Great opening line from the latest Cold Case video. Props to Ken Raymond, Tanner Herriott and Paige Dillard – the usual suspects – for creating yet another fasicnating Cold Case, both in print and in video. This remains my favorite of the videos we produce. I wish we had more time to give it more love, to be honest.

The Ladies Room and Mary Fallin

The Ladies Room, a video podcast hosted by Angi Bruss, Paige Dillard and Jacquelyn Farris, has been around since last summer. The show is designed for women to talk about issues they face in work and life in general.

The latest guest is Congresswoman Mary Fallin, who stopped by the OPUBCO Studios last Friday. We taped the video Friday, posted it today and it was the most viewed clip on NewsOK for Tuesday, April 8.

Behind the scenes with Elephant Nation

This week, we launched the Elephant Nation page on NewsOK. The OKC Zoo has elephants, but they are leaving. Not on an unhappy trip though:

“The elephants leave in June to breed with a male at the Tulsa Zoo. Their return hinges on two timelines: conception and construction.”

The Oklahoman’s Carrie Coppernoll was the lead reporter on this assignment. At first, she scheduled a studio intervew with the interim zoo director. Then she took her camera to the zoo. Paige Dillard and Chase Estus went on a third video interview with Carrie back at the zoo.

As it turned out, we have six videos ranging from interviews with a man who trained the elephants when they were young to a history of elephants in OKC.

Just wait until we add the Elephant ringtone.

Cold Case: Kathy Engle

April 23, 1986 Kathy Engle vanished from Shepherd Mall in Okalhoma City. Her murder has never been solved.

The Cold Case series is my favorite of all the videos we shoot at OPUBCO. The Oklahoman’s Ken Raymond writes the stories for the print side. Then he goes several steps further by working with the video crew to set up interviews, provide sources and lead interviews. Paige Dillard writes for video and picks out the video and sound bites. Tanner Herriott shoots and edits the video.

Det. Kyle Eastridge from the OKC PD has been tremendously helpful and willing to go on camera for this series. Having that level of insight and expertise on these cases lends to its credibility. And it shows the eagerness of the police to solve these crimes.

Working with Ken is always good, here’s why: he know his material, it’s always a solid story and he’s willing to help make the overall product the best it can be.

I wish we had more time to give this series more attention. The level of effort for these is more than most anything else we do because we usually shoot, write and produce these over a 2 week period instead of just a daily turn.

Must see video: Portwood Williams Sr.

Paige Dillard and Tanner Herriott teamed up on this fascinating interview with Portwood Williams Sr.

We shot the video for Black History month. Portwood participated with Clara Luper in the sit-in at Katz in Oklahoma City.

Check him out. He’s in his 90′s, but clearly retains that fire, that spirit. The ending is powerful as he talks about respect. Great stuff.
