The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports From 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday — 78 hours — the OHP worked no fatal accidents. Just four years ago, 18 people died in vehicle accidents during the Memorial Day holiday weekend in Oklahoma.

While the highway patrol did not work any fatal vehicle accidents over the Memorial Day holiday, at least four Oklahomans lost their lives on city streets, lakes and out-of-state highways.

Joe Muller, a former associate athletic director at Oklahoma State, will be introduced this morning as the athletic director at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Earle H. Hagen, who co-wrote the jazz classic “Harlem Nocturne” and composed memorable themes for “The Andy Griffith Show,” “I Spy,” “The Mod Squad” and other TV shows, has died. He was 88.

Today in OKC: Mostly cloudy. Highs in the lower 80s. Easterly winds about 10 mph. Thirty percent chance of thunderstorms in the morning, before turning partly cloudy in the afternoon.

Funeral services will be held today in Norman for former University of Oklahoma quarterback and Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Jack Mildren. A service will be held at 1 p.m. at McFarlin Methodist Church. The 58-year-old died Thursday after a battle with stomach cancer.

Storms that forecasters said featured hail the size of tennis and golf balls produced damaging winds early this morning in western Oklahoma. There were unconfirmed reports of at least two tornadoes, one about four miles east of Elk City and another north of Cordell in Washita County. The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for western Washita County and southern Custer County.

Academy Award-winning director Sydney Pollack, who achieved commercial and critical success with the gender-bending comedy “Tootsie” and the period drama “Out of Africa,” has died. He was 73.

Oklahoma State and Oral Roberts knew they would be a part of the 64-team NCAA baseball tournament field. Oklahoma’s selection on Monday wasn’t quite as predictable, although the Sooners maintain it shouldn’t have been a surprise. All three teams learned their destinations for the tournament, which will begin on Friday at 16 regional sites across the country.

In OKC today: Partly cloudy. Highs in the upper 80s. Southwesterly winds 10 to 15 mph, gusting to about 30 mph. Slight chance of thunderstorms in the morning. Thirty percent chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Here’s a quick update for your Wednesday morning…

A fire at the Rock Cafe in Stroud last night all but leveled the historic restaurant. No injuries were reported.

Two Oklahomans — one a well-known politician and the other a quiet businessman — were honored for fighting on Iwo Jima in one of World War II’s bloodiest battles. Henry Bellmon, who served two terms as governor of Oklahoma and two terms as a U.S. senator, and Ted Anderson of Tulsa, who was in the electronics business until retiring, each received a large, 10-by-19-foot American flag Tuesday that had been flown over the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Va.

Boone Pickens said Tuesday that his hedge fund has nearly doubled his $165 million gift to Oklahoma State University’s athletic department. And, Pickens will make a historic gift to academics at Oklahoma State University today. The dollar amount was not released, but OSU officials said it will be the largest academic gift in Oklahoma history.

The Big 12 baseball tournament begins today at the Bricktown Ballpark. Oklahoma plays at 12:30 pm, OSU plays at 7:30 pm.

In OKC today, Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid-80s. Twenty percent chance of thunderstorms this morning, winds 10 to 20 mph.

Lack of victories didn’t cost Sean Sutton his job. Lack of leadership did.

Good morning, I’m Dave Morris with a NewsOK.com update from The Oklahoman.

That was the headline on the front page of today’s Oklahoman. Berry Tramel
wrote OSU athletic director Mike Holder removed Sean not so much because of
two straight mediocre seasons, but because Holder didn’t believe things
would improve.

Read more online at NewsOK and in today’s Oklahoman.

Last night at the Ford Center, Tennessee beat Texas A&M 53-45 to advance to
the Women’s Final Four basketball tournament. Candace Parker led the Lady
Vols despite separating her shoulder. Twice.

Other news being reported by The Oklahoman this morning, Oklahoma County
locks people up at a higher rate than all but eight counties in the United
States despite chronic overcrowding at its jail, a study released Tuesday
shows.

Chances for thunderstorms return to Oklahoma today, but it should be another
day before severe weather is in the state.
In OKC today, Highs in the mid-50s. 40 percent chance of storms. Tomorrow,
highs in the 70s, 60 percent chance of storms.

Stay with NewsOK
