Woodward minister arrested

Edwin Grant Dowty, a Woodward educator, former foster parent and minister of the New Covenant Church of Woodward was arrested Monday and charged with three counts of lewd molestation of a female under the age of 13.

Ellen Censky, director of the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, announced today she will resign next month from the University of Oklahoma museum.

Oklahoma State University today became the largest campus in the state to ban tobacco. OSU President Burns Hargis said the policy aims to make OSU a clean and healthy environment.

Starbucks Corp. has announced it’s closing 600 underperforming stores in the United States. it expects to open fewer than 200 new company-operated stores in the United States in fiscal 2009.

Al Roker in OKC

Al Roker was in town today. Before that, here are some headlines for you.

Thousands of worshippers began arriving at the Washington Nationals stadium Thursday, eagerly awaiting an open-air Mass that will be presided over by Pope Benedict 16. A crowd of 46,000 is expected, and the demand for tickets doubled the supply.

The Oklahoman’s Andrea Cohen reports It appears Oklahoma State has hired a man of many interests in basketball coach Travis Ford, who accepted an offer to become OSU’s next men’s basketball coach on Wednesday. A press conference is set for 2 pm. We will have video from the presser, along with analysis from Berry Tramel and Jenni Carlson later this morning.

The Seattle SuperSonics’ Oklahoma-based owners on Wednesday accused the city of Seattle of scheming with a potential purchaser to force them to sell. Meanwhile NBA commissioner David Stern says Seattle made little effort to keep the team.

Al Roker visited OKC this morning. NewsOK.tv’s Tanner Herriott was there. Video will be posted later today.

Mayor Mick talks to Downtowners

It’s Friday. Good time at the CARE event last time, will blog more about that later today. Here’s a quick look at headlines this morning:

Downtowners got their shot at quizzing Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett on Thursday, and they learned he advocates a light rail system as part of a MAPS 3, but any vote on such an initiative is at least two years away.

Frontier Airlines has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but unlike other airlines filing for bankruptcy in recent weeks, it plans to keep running while it reorganizes.

Sonics owners exchanged e-mails last April suggesting their desire to move the NBA team to Oklahoma City, according to e-mails obtained by lawyers for the city of Seattle.

Four Oklahoma State fraternity members accused of beating a pledge last year have pleaded no contest in to a misdemeanor hazing charge as part of a plea deal.

Burns Hargis hired, students react?

OSU named Burns Hargis as its new president. I went to OSU-OKC to gauge students’ reaction to the hire.

Now, OSU-OKC is a satellite campus, so to me it’s not a true reaction of students. Most of the students had no idea who Burns Hargis was, or that OSU had named a new president. Truth is, it doesn’t affect them like it would a 4 year college student living on campus where OSU becomes a part of their life and a part of their family.

Also, the OSU-OKC security detained me and my crew while we were on campus. Everyone was really nice. And it got us in from the cold wind.
