One in 8 Million

Saw this “One in 8 Million” on the NY Times today, they played it up on their home page. Nice collaboration of audio and photo. As you might suspect (good titles are amazing, huh), it’s one person from the 8 million among the Gotham population.

Street musicians have good stories. From my handful of NY subway encounters, the street musicians are typically really good musicians and/or entertainers. The image above is from a street musicians’ interview.

The Oklahoman’s Michael Kimball posted a video last night also using only photo and audio. Completely different subject matter and tone. But still engaging.

Matthew Gene Fox had plenty to say to reporters who visited him Thursday at the Tarrant County jail. Fox, 17, suspected in the Saturday night stabbing death of his girlfriend’s father, Leroy Herrera, 41, admitted the killing but said it was self-defense.

Fox said he was hiding in his girlfriend’s closet when her father came in and “began yelling at her.”

Fox said Herrera asked, “Who are you?” and “I told him, ‘Don’t worry about it. If you’re going to hit somebody, hit me. Don’t hit a girl.’

“He’s like, ‘What are you going to do about it?’ Come on, hit me, hit me,” Fox said.

NY Times has a list of 44 places to go this year.

How many of these places have you been or would like to visit? I’ve been to a disappointing five from this list, something to work on I suppose.

NY Times does conversations

The NY Times has this conversations page. I think it’s pretty cool.

It’s marketing, and it’s also compelling, at least to me. We not only do news, sports, entertainment, other newsish stuff, but we shoot advertising and marketing at the OPUBCO Studios.

Great stuff. Well shot. Peeps you recognize. Relates to sections of the newspaper and Web. Compelling to watch. NY Times may have a future, I don’t even know…

NYT Digital head goes to NPR

Was just watching a video interview with the NY Times’ digital director last night. Today, she’s leaving the Times for NPR. A second big name player in the industry going to NPR.

Vivian Schiller, the longtime head of NYTimes.com’s digital efforts, has left the company, and has joined National Public Radio as its new CEO. She succeeds Dennis Haarsager, who has served as interim CEO since March, after Ken Stern left abruptly after internal discord. Also recently, Kinsey Wilson, the executive editor of USA Today and previously the editor of USAToday.com, left the paper and joined NPR as its digital head.

Schiller oversaw the Times’ great video content. They focus more on documentary-style videos instead of chasing breaking news. And they do a great job. They recently shifted to Brightcove, the same company that hosts NewsOK.com’s videos.

NBC fires worker who posted on Wikipedia

Tim Russert died last week. Before NBC News announced the death on air – it waited to inform Russert’s family – the Wikipedia entry on Russert had been updated with the news. NBC tracked down who updated the Wiki, and fired the junior level employee.

The NY Times has a good story on how news is delayed – or not – online.

Kelli O’Hara, big time from Tulsa

I went to college with Kelli O’Hara at OCU. A very nice girl with big time talent. So it’s good to see she continues to do amazing things on Broadway. She’s been a Tony nominee before. And is again, this time with her role in South Pacific.

This weekend, a glowing story was written in the NY Times.

Good for Kelli.

AS Nellie Forbush, the sweetheart from Little Rock in the smashing new revival of “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific,” Kelli O’Hara deserves a medal for single-handedly rescuing the ingénue from extinction.
“Kelli is a phenomenon,” said Mary Rodgers Guettel, Richard Rodgers’s daughter. She’s also the mother of Adam Guettel, who composed the songs for “The Light in the Piazza,” which provided Ms. O’Hara with a breakthrough role in 2005. “You don’t usually find people that pretty who can sing that pretty. And she’s grown tremendously as an actress. Kelli was a pretty soubrette a few years ago. Now she’s, well, she’s somebody who can do anything.”

NY Times: News Corp. may join bid for Yahoo

Interesting that News Corp might join Microsoft in a bid for Yahoo!

By the way, I hope to catch up with my friends at Lost Remote next week at the NAB Show in Vegas.

CBS News says not negotiating with CNN

A day after the NY Times reported CBS News was talking with CNN about outsourcing reporting… CBS News denies the report.

“We’re extremely satisfied with and proud of our news-gathering operation,” CBS News spokeswoman Sandy Genelius said when asked about the Times report. “No outside arrangements are being negotiated.”

And we’ll see what tomorrow brings… Maybe another Tupac Shakur exclusive from the LA Times.
