Gundy, Carlson driving NewsOK (hello Paraguay)

First of all, you may have experienced problems getting NewsOK to load this week. You won’t be surprised the Mike Gundy-Jenni Carlson situation is the reason. We’ve had serious traffic from people everywhere.

Let’s break it down:

The top referring Web site to NewsOK is ESPN.com. CBS Sportsline and CNN SI are also in the top five.

Yesterday was the highest trafficked day in NewsOK history. Today will top that before 5 p.m.

Users from 152 countries have visited NewsOK this week, including one each from Fiji and Paraguay. Allow me to personally say thank you to both of you. We love you.

The top viewed video on NewsOK was Jenni Carlson responding for the first time on camera to Mike Gundy’s press conference. We thank Jenni and Mike Sherman for their time.

But the real thanks goes to you the user. Thank you for visiting NewsOK and sharing your comments and dialogue. Keep it clean, but keep it coming.

DnA

DnA.jpg

You gotta love it when you get lucky.

Like when you hit every light green on the way to work. Or when your co-worker stumbles. And it’s caught on tape.

We tape a segment each week called DnA. It stands for Dave N Angi. Every Tuesday or Wednesday we send Angi out to talk with Oklahomans about various topics. This week, we were at Remington Park shooting a promo video for the upcoming Oklahoma Derby (Oct. 21). While there, Angi spoke with people inside the casino. Kyle edited the piece with some classic Vegas-style music.

Once we have footage, we tape a Dave-with-Angi segment in the studios, usually on Thursdays and the video is posted late Thursday or Friday morning.

If you haven’t seen our studio, it’s like a closet. Pretty small. We’ve all tripped, stumbled or fallen in that studio over cables or light stands.

Be sure to watch this video until the end for Angi’s dramatic exit. We are fortunate to work with good sports around here!

N Style, n’stuff

We threw Angi on camera last week to introduce the new N Style web page on NewsOK. Kyle put the finishing touches on the studio shot, using After Effects and PDFs of recent covers. Kyle finished the video this afternoon.

N Style is our high-end, niche publication. It’s a very slick publication, nicely designed each month by Jennifer Armstrong and edited and pumped with content by various peeps, including Melissa Howell, Alan Herzberger, Linda Miller and Hugh Scott.

Do you like the way your book smells?

Read ya'll!

Read lately? Do you ever read? One in four adults read no books at all in the past year. This according to a survey conducted by the Associated Press and Ipsos. Who read the most? Women and older people were most avid. Top choices? Religious works and popular fiction. The typical person did claim to read four books in the last year. Raise your hand if you believe that!

Well, maybe it’s the smell. Another survey, this by Zogby International, found that 43 percent of students identified smell, either a new or old smell, as the quality they most like about books. What? And you might have guessed it, an electronic textbook Web site is launching the world’s first smelly e-book. In September, CafeScribe.com will send every e-textbook purchaser a scratch and sniff sticker with a musty “old book” smell. Ok, seriously, putting a sticker on your computer for a musty book smell?

Let’s turn from the bookworms to the party animals. The Princeton Review has released its annual lists of what school does what. Top party school? West Virginia. Texas partied into the No. 3 spot. No school from Oklahoma made the top 20. The Stone Cold Sober school? Brigham Young University. Again.

That’s today’s 3 Things. And you now know them. Enjoy.

OU names QB

The Oklahoman provided NewsOK.com with some breaking news you can use this afternoon. OU names its starting QB for the upcoming season.

Sam Bradford. No surprise really.

We already had our cameras ready for today’s The Ladies Room shoot. So we broke it down, set up the cam in the studio and quickly taped a 30 second video update. Most viewed video on NewsOK today.

All people need is the short and sweet, not the 15 minute, 2 gb, cinematic epic.

We’ll save that for tomorrow.

Football and crime scenes

Today, Kyle, Tanner and I drove up to UCO. A prelim to next week’s big Edlam launch. Always good to have the pre-meet to confirm what should happen.

The guys and I then went into the bleachers to shoot an intro for the upcoming site. UCO Bronchos (note the ‘h’) football players were slaving away, pacing themselves through a mid-afternoon practice. Once we had our shot, we packed gear and headed south.

To a crime scene. This is for an upcoming Cold Case package. Coming to an Oklahoman (Sunday edition) near you. Or your favorite Web site. We shot next to a electric power substation in the 90 degree heat. Gotta love wearing a sports coat. And make up for that matter.

Just kidding.

About the sports coat.
