One Night in… Edna’s

We had Burns Hargis, longtime OKC businessman and host of Flashpoint, in our studios this week. Ed Kelley interviewed Burns about his role in the Creativity Project. And we asked Burns to tape a segment for wimgo.com about what he loves about Oklahoma.

Burns will soon become president of Oklahoma State University. He said during his taping for wimgo that his favorite place in Oklahoma was OSU. And he backed that up by saying it wasn’t the campus or a favorite hang out spot. Burns explained that college is about the experience, the time spent learning and being with your peers. He used the example of the hot dog stand, or any place you frequent during a certain period of your life. He said you talk the hot dog stand up to your friends, and when they go there it’s not that great.

Well you never went there for the hot dogs, Burns said. You went there because your friends did. Or because you had a special memory of the place. That was his explanation of his alma mater, OSU.

So growing up in OKC, I went to school at Oklahoma City University. I spent several years there getting my undergrad and postgrad pieces of paper.

One of the hang-outs the OCU kids frequented was Edna’s.

Talk about your hot dog stands.

Yes Edna’s, home of the cold beer and dollar bills on the walls. It’s an Oklahoma City fixture. Has been for 19 years. Edna is celebrating her 19th anniversary this Thursday.

I never spent much time there. In fact I’ve only been there 2-3 times and that counts this past Friday night. Place hasn’t changed and that’s what the usuals expect.

But some places need only experienced a few times for the legend to grow. Everyone has their hot dog stand stories.
