Tuesday morning update

Funeral services will be held today in Norman for former University of Oklahoma quarterback and Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Jack Mildren. A service will be held at 1 p.m. at McFarlin Methodist Church. The 58-year-old died Thursday after a battle with stomach cancer.

Storms that forecasters said featured hail the size of tennis and golf balls produced damaging winds early this morning in western Oklahoma. There were unconfirmed reports of at least two tornadoes, one about four miles east of Elk City and another north of Cordell in Washita County. The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for western Washita County and southern Custer County.

Academy Award-winning director Sydney Pollack, who achieved commercial and critical success with the gender-bending comedy “Tootsie” and the period drama “Out of Africa,” has died. He was 73.

Oklahoma State and Oral Roberts knew they would be a part of the 64-team NCAA baseball tournament field. Oklahoma’s selection on Monday wasn’t quite as predictable, although the Sooners maintain it shouldn’t have been a surprise. All three teams learned their destinations for the tournament, which will begin on Friday at 16 regional sites across the country.

In OKC today: Partly cloudy. Highs in the upper 80s. Southwesterly winds 10 to 15 mph, gusting to about 30 mph. Slight chance of thunderstorms in the morning. Thirty percent chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Storms brewing in Oklahoma

When you see a storm warning on TV or online, here’s what the media sees from the National Weather Service: a bulletin in all caps like today:

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A TORNADO WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM THIS EVENING FOR 27 COUNTIES (ok, ok, enough shouting!!)… The watch includes the metro counties of Canadian, Cleveland and Oklahoma counties.

And some other news making headlines in the state.

Police in Tulsa are investigating the death of a 17-year-old boy who jumped
through a plate glass window at a downtown hotel this morning. The teen, who
has a California address, apparently jumped through a window on the ninth
floor of the Great Western Hotel and landed on the second floor.

Police are investigating the deaths of two men whose bodies were found this
morning near a homeless shelter in southwest Oklahoma City. The deaths are
being called homicides.

Tonight is opening night for the Oklahoma RedHawks at the AT&T Bricktown
Ballpark. First pitch is at 7:05.

I have a few questions

I have some questions.

Do you know what the world’s tallest building is? It’s now the Dubai Tower. It’s over 1,822 feet. And climbing. The final height is a closely guarded secret, but completion of the concrete, glass and steel structure is expected by the end of 2008. Did you know there are four criteria for world’s tallest building: the height of the structural top, the highest occupied floor, the top of the roof, and the tip of the spire, pinnacle, antenna, mast or flag pole.

Do you know this girl? I bet you do. USA Today reports TBS is bringing in actress Alyssa Milano to be your online guide during the baseball playoffs. She will have a continual presence on TBS’ Hot Corner on mlb.com. Milano’s first Hot Corner report will appear Monday. She told the USA Today — “I learned how to rub baseballs with the mud.”

Speaking of… video. Do you know how long most people spend watching video online? According to comscore’s recent numbers, U.S. viewers watched an average of 3 hours of video online during July. Google commanded 27 percent of that audience. My friends at TheLostRemote.com note the average length of the videos watched is 2.7 minutes. Thanks Ed.

OK, in order to stretch this video to 2.7 minutes… Do you know the most valuable sports franchise in the world? It’s the Dallas Cowboys according to Forbes magazine. The Cowboys are tops with a value of $1.5 billion, thanks to their new stadium.

So there you go. A wealth of knowledge.
