2011 Brings Excitement
Column that appeared in the Saturday, Jan. 1, edition of The Oklahoman:
Welcome to 2011, Dave Morris here to talk about The Oklahoma Publishing Co.’s video production. Angi Bruss and I host many of the videos you see on NewsOK.com.
In a little over three years, OPUBCO’s video crew has produced about 20,000 videos. Most of them are on-demand for viewing at a later convenience. And while video has become an accepted and expected part of the online experience, I think it will evolve and change plenty this year.
Most of us have smart phones with video capabilities. We have seen photo sharing become routine, but video sharing has not grown as fast. I think that will change, especially as newer TVs allow for online video viewing. Technology changes and improves our communication, and video will a part of that.
For example, Skype now allows mobile video conversations at pretty decent quality. So any reporter could go “live” from anywhere. It’s iPhone’s Facetime for the masses. The upcoming iPad also is expected to have two cameras.
As part of our bowl coverage, we partnered with MidFirst Bank for a video road trip. Damon Fontenot and Tim Money filed videos as they drove from Oklahoma City to San Antonio to Phoenix and back. Imagine if that video coverage becomes more like the ongoing, real-time discussions you have on Facebook and Twitter, not just daily, ondemand posts.
It should be a fun year.
