NewsOK wins APME award

The video operation at OPUBCO Communications Group was honored today with the prestigious Innovator of the Year award at the annual Associated Press Managing Editor’s conference.

OPUBCO, which owns The Oklahoman and NewsOK.com, was awarded for its total approach to video, including changing the culture of the newsroom with new skills for telling stories and covering news.

“We have embraced video in a big way,” said Kelly Fry, vice president of News and Information. “It has changed our culture and the way we cover news. This is wonderful affirmation of our efforts.”

Haunted House Restaurant

Dave Cathey wrote a Halloween food feature this week on the Haunted House Restaurant. When he made the video request, I wanted to shoot the piece myself. I had never been to the place but had heard about it growing up. In fact what you hear about it are two things: it’s hard to find and the food is good.

I can’t vouch for the food. We shot our piece and left. But once you find Miramar the winding drive is only beginning. Seemed like a cool place, although not as Halloween-ish as I thought it would be.

OK Crush It

For my friends on Twitter, you’ve seen and read the Tweets about Gary Vaynerchuck coming to town for special book signing in November.

Dave Cathey rounded up Daniel Gordon (@dangordon), Ryan Parrott (@chefrp), Lori Ford (@lofolulu) and Clayton Bahr (@winedr). We backed the cameras up (studio isn’t deep enough for a proper five person shoot) and let them talk about Mr. V.

You can learn more about the upcoming event here. And here are some quick details:

Opa!

Met Dave Cathey at St. George Greek Orthodox Church on a chilly, windy morning today. We shot a quick video to advance this weekend’s Greek Festival. This marks the 25th year of the festival, featuring Greek culture, fun and food.
