Scandal and pancakes
United Way of Central Oklahoma announced its 2009 campaign goal this morning, on a cool, cloudy morning at the Bricktown Ballpark.
Three years ago, I played keyboard at this event – some background music – for those munching on breakfast.
Last year, I was asked to be a last minute contestant on stage in the pancake flipping contest. And why not? Made the finals vs Alex Cameron of News9 fame and took home the trophy. I don’t have the trophy anymore, but the spatula is at home somewhere.
They asked me to host this year’s contest, and included NewsOK’s Angi Bruss in the contest. Other competitors were Rowdy the RedHawk, Rumble the Bison, OKC police chief Bill Citty, fire chief Cecil Clay, News9′s Amanda Taylor and Alex Cameron (who didn’t show up in time, so we called Doug Warner on stage on his last day at News9), KFOR’s Ali Meyer and KATT’s Jake Daniels.
As you watch the video you can see eventual winner Rowdy the RedHawk dropping his flapjack early in the competition. But in the finals (hey, we were on the honor system), Rowdy clearly landed his pancake while Angi and Bill Citty dropped theirs.
Later in the day, Rumble launched a soft Twitter protest claiming proof he was robbed.
United Way announced their campaign goal would be $18.5 million. That was the real reason a thousand or so people showed up. But good fun and shenanigans were had on stage as well.
