Unsolved OSBI cases

pewitt.jpgThe Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is trying to close a number of unsolved cases, including one — the death of Mary Pewitt — that was featured on the Cold Case Oklahoma site.

You can check out the OSBI cases here: www.ok.gov/osbi/Investigative/Unsolved_Cases

Here’s what they posted about the Pewitt slaying:

On June 4, 1988, the body of twenty five year old Mary Elizabeth Pewitt was found inside her residence in Comanche, Oklahoma.  A divorced mother of two, Mary worked at a local bar and had closed the establishment around midnight June 3.  After driving over to the bar owner’s house where she dropped off the day’s proceeds, she returned home where she was met by a boyfriend.  Mary and her boyfriend visited for a short while before he left the residence becoming the last person known to have seen her alive.  It was shortly after the boyfriend’s departure that investigators believe someone entered the house and viciously stabbed Mary to death.  Mary had recently been involved in a volatile relationship regarding child support.  On the night she was murdered, Mary’s children were not at the home because they had spent the night with Mary’s parents.  The OSBI did not enter the case until 1997 when the agency asked to assist the Comanche Police Department.

As Agent Homer stated, murder by knife is usually done by someone who has something personal against the victim. These types of murders are usually viewed to be “crimes of passion” killings.

Obviously there were a number of core suspects in this murder, such as the man who was watching tv with her that night and her ex husband and his wife, the Allen’s.

Things I would be interested in finding out:
What precludes the tv pal from being considered the murderer aside from him saying that he left at 1245 a.m.? Was there any signed of forced entry? Is there any evidence to show that she was definitely killed while asleep in bed or did she die in bed as a result of the attack? Could she have been awake and standing when attacked? If so, could the autopsy reveal how and where the first blows were struck…i.e. from behind, from the front, at a downward stabbing or as if the person was prone on the bed? Could the autopsy reveal whether the person was right handed or left handed? Taller or shorter, weaker or stronger than the victim from the angles and depths of the blows? Was the murder weapon left at the home? Was it one of her own kitchen utensils that killed her? Was the knife single edged, serrated? Could there have been more than one knife involved as if two people were involved in the murder? Were the wounds slashes or stabs? If there was not very many or any evidence of her trying to protect herself at first, she may have been asleep. That she was found in just a t-shirt and socks can mean that she was asleep or undressing to go to sleep. With no obvious motive being noted, meaning no robbery, no rape, could the murder have been done by a female?

I know the OSBI has probably already asked those questions and answered them and I am just being an armchair sleuth, but this tragedy needs all the help it can get so the Morgan and
the Allen girls can find some peace of mind. I never heard about Mary’s killing til I read the OSBI cold case website. She was just 2-3 years older than me when she was murdered. I hope whoever did it gets caught and soon.

I have some abiltys , i have had since i was a child, i pick up on things, and i think she was killed by both the wife and the husband, i feel so sorry for her she was so beautiful to, what a shame over child support

Mary Sport Pewitt was my cousin and I loved her dearly. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of her. This past year on the 20th anniversary of her murder I could only think about having to drive to San Diego to tell my Uncle that his only child had been murdered. When I got the news I cried for days and felt like someone had ripped my heart out with their bare hands. I can only imagine how her mother Elizabeth must have felt finding her daughter so savagely murdered. I pray that one day some where some how that this beast of a human being is caught. No one should be allowed to get away with this. Mary I love you!!!!

I am Mary’s biological father’s sister. The only niece I ever had. My brother loved her dearly. He went to his grave grieving over Mary’s death. I kept Mary when she was little while living in Lubbock, Texas. My brother admitted that he had not been a good dad and was pleased that Mr. Morgan became the dad he never was. Mary took the girls to Ca. to meet and visit my brother. He was so thrilled that he and Mary had been able to communicate after so many years of not seeing or hearing from each other. My parents loved Mary, but understood that Elizabeth had remarried and wished she and Mary the very best in their lives. I pray for closure for all that loved Mary. Pat Sport Mathis

I am one of Mary’s daughters, Pat or Becky please contact me at allenkira@hotmail.com

I just want to say it’s been 21 years today, and if anyone knows ANYTHING, PLEASE tell someone. My sister and I do have our own lives and did survive, but my mother has missed out on the many activities that she should have been there for such as my high school graduation, me decorating my dorm room, my sisters wedding, and the birth of what would be my mom’s grand kids. She has two beautiful granddaughters that she will never meet, two nephews that she will never know and two daughters that miss her oh so much. If you do know something….PLEASE let someone know. My sister, grandparents, and family deserve closure and my mom should be able to rest in peace. Just think if you had to miss all of those memories of your kid/kids imagine what it would be like. You are not doing anyone a service by hiding a secret, is just carrying weight on your shoulders, and by releasing that burden you could bring resolution and closure to so many people. Please keep my mom’s memory alive….Kira

I am curious as to whether miss Pewitt knew a man named David Payne, and if Payne frequented the bar in town where she worked.

What was the street address in Comanche Ok where the murder took place?
