The 2014 Ram 1500 pickup will be available with a Fiat-sourced 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel, branded by Chrysler as the EcoDiesel. To further boost fuel economy, it will come mated to an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission.
Though Ram isn’t releasing horsepower or torque figures just yet, the same engine will deliver 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque under the hood of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, so expect to see comparable numbers in the Ram 1500.
There’s no word on fuel economy numbers yet, either, but Chrysler is quick to point out that its EcoDiesel V-6 produces 60-percent less emissions than diesel engines of 25 years ago. Since the gasoline-powered Ram 1500 delivers fuel economy up to 25 mpg, we know the diesel version will top this number.
Fred Diaz, president of the Ram Truck brand and CEO of Chrysler Mexico, is enthusiastic about its latest pickup offering, saying, “Truck owners have been emphatically asking for it, and Ram will be the only manufacturer to offer a diesel powertrain in the half-ton segment with the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel.”
Saying the EcoDiesel will give Ram a competitive advantage, Diaz promises the truck will deliver “best-in-class torque, fuel economy and range.” Look for details on power, fuel economy and pricing to be released closer to the new model’s late-summer launch.
