Visits to the “cop shop,” ie, the Oklahoma City Police Department, are a part of my weekly duties. There, reporters from the OKC media gather in a small third-floor room and peruse the freshest list of arrests from Oklahoma County jail as well as police reports. It’s the place police news items like this, this and this tend to surface. We mutter and curse when “the stack,” our nickname for the pile of reports, looks impossibly large. We perk up when a big crime item surfaces, and chat and joke and cast glances over a competitors’ shoulders if it is sensed one is acting particularly stealthy.

I’d like to blog a little more, so I thought I’d start a regular chronicle of cop shop happenings to share some quirky or noteworthy items that come up at cop shop but don’t quite make the news.

Here are a few from recent weeks:

Lethal weapons

Police found a woman on the street who said her brother-in-law had made unwanted sexual advances while driving her home from the bar. She fought him off. The woman, a kick boxer, said her hands are “registered as deadly weapons in New Mexico.”

Best confiscated weapon

The best weapon police picked up from a criminal lately had to be a set of brass knuckles with an artistic rendering of wolves. Owoooo!

In unrelated wolf news, please read the Amazon.com reviews for this The Mountain Three Wolf Moon Short Sleeve Tee.

Random criminal quote

“Don’t freak out, I’m robbing you.”

Questionable reasoning

A cop asked a convicted felon accused of illegal possession of a firearm if he was aware it was not legal for felons to own guns.
His response? “Yeah, that’s why I was going to sell it.” The man had just shot himself in the penis while trying to make sure the gun functioned properly for its pending sale in the 7-11 parking lot.

True story.

Most lame “Do you know who I am?” line ever?

A man was harassing female customers inside of Mike’s Bar in Oklahoma City. The man threatened to shoot customers when asked to leave, shouting “You don’t know who I am!” The man, who happened to be wearing brown shorts and a brown shirt, was bear-hugged as a security guard escorted him out the door. He lingered in the parking lot, refusing to leave. When officers picked him up there he cussed and yelled that he had a concealed carry permit and his brother was a Kingfisher County deputy. He then told the officer “I’m gonna shoot you for this!” The officers did not roll out the red carpet as they escorted him to the squad car on complaints of carrying a weapon into a bar, threatening bodily harm/death and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.

Patrick Venable, 28, is accused of raping a Guthrie woman while on duty June 20. He was ordered to stand trial after Special Judge R.L. Hert Jr. ruled April 4 that there was enough evidence presented at the preliminary hearing for Venable to face trial in district court.

His attorney, Carl Hughes, wrote in an email that Venable plans to proceed with a trial. He said he is still waiting on discovery materials from prosecutors before the case can move forward.

Another pretrial date has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 17, Hughes said.

Oklahoma authorities are teaming up to target underage alcohol sales and drinking for the remainder of June.

The Oklahoma County Metro Alcohol Task Force will perform compliance checks at bars and convenience stores to make sure employees aren’t selling alcohol to minors. Officers will also conduct “party patrols” by responding to loud noise complaints and checking parties to make sure there aren’t any illegal alcohol activities.

Mark Myers, spokesman for the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s office, said the force consists of officers from Oklahoma County, Bethany police, Forest Park police and Midwest City police.

According to statistics released by the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office in 2010:

24 people under the age of 21 died in accident fatalities involving alcohol

163 people under the age of 18 received complaints for driving under the influence of alcohol

665 under the age of 18 were involved in drunken incidents

Myers said the task force is funded by a grant through the “2 Much 2 Lose” program, which is administered by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

Rebecca Bryan, 53, of Mustang, is scheduled to be arraigned on a first-degree murder charge Tuesday in district court.

Rebecca Bryan, 53, of Mustang, is scheduled to be arraigned on a first-degree murder charge Tuesday in district court.

She is accused of fatally shooting her husband, Keith Bryan, the Nichols Hills fire chief, in September 2011 at their Mustang home. Bryan is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and will enter a plea.

Most of the shooting details and a possible motive were kept secret until Bryan’s preliminary hearing in March. A friend of Bryan’s and a former lover testified at the hearing, divulging new details about the couple’s relationship and Rebecca Bryan’s affairs.

From our preliminary hearing story:

Her friend, Debbie Proctor, took the stand and said she was at the Bryans’ home in Mustang at 1320 Rose Hill Drive shortly before the shooting about 10 p.m. Sept. 20. She said that the couple seemed happy that night.

After the shooting, Proctor said Rebecca Bryan called her and asked her to come over.

On the way to the hospital to check on Keith Bryan, Proctor testified that Rebecca Bryan showed the people in the car a picture of another man’s penis on her phone. She testified that Bryan told them she had sex with the man, one of her real estate clients, earlier that day and felt guilty because of the shooting.

Bryan also showed them a text message she sent to a former lover about inheriting a significant amount of money soon and moving to Hugo.

The hearing was continued until April so prosecutors could question more law enforcement witnesses.
Patrick Venable, 28, was ordered to stand trial after Special judge R.L. Hert Jr. ruled April 4 that there was enough evidence presented at the preliminary hearing for Venable to face trial in district court on a count of second-degree rape.

Court records show that Venable’s pretrial is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 15 in Logan County. At his arraignment last week, Venable pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police filed a search warrant Monday for items inside a southwest Oklahoma City home where three people were found dead earlier this month.

Officers responded to shots fired at the home at 3221 S Durland Avenue shortly after midnight April 14. Witnesses told police they saw several people run from the home after the shots were fired and left in different vehicles.

Upon arrival, police found James Lumpkin, 42, dead outside the residence. Two other victims, Kayla Ramirez, 19, and Francisco Grajeda, 19, were found inside.

Arrest warrants were issued April 18 for Genaro Hernandez, 25, Luis Humberto Solis, 24, and Jesus Solis-Acosta, 26, who are all wanted in connection with the shootings.

As of Wednesday, police said the three men have not been arrested or located.

Two brothers who live in the home were also arrested on drug possession complaints and questioned in the murders April 17.

In the search warrant affidavit, officers requested permission to search the home for several items that could be evidence in the case, including knives, cutting instruments, weapons and firearms.

The following items were recovered from the home:
