Maughan supporters fawn over candidate
With more than half of all the votes counted, and with Brian Maughan receiving nearly half of those votes, the mood at his watch party was festive.
Supporters spoke of a man with a long history of public service.
“Brian is a really good man. he’s always taking care of people,” said Kim Rietz. She was a mail carrier and saw Maughan, at age 14, as a caregiver to an elderly couple in the neighborhood.
“Every time I’d take their mail to them, he was there with them, helping them write letters, anything they needed. Brian was a person they counted on,” she said.

Rinehart calm despite early returns
Brent Rinehart isn’t partying tonight.
The embattled Oklahoma County District 2 Commissioner has other plans.
While his opponents wait for primary election returns to come in at watch parties at their homes and at local restaurants, Rinehart is instead at a local movie theater watching “The Dark Knight” with his girlfriend.
“I’ve never been one for watch parties,” Rinehart said Monday.
A few hours ago, Rinehart was deciding whether to watch Batman on an IMAX screen or regular screen.
And as usual, Rinehart seemed calm and upbeat.

Early take on Oklahoma County races
With a smattering of precincts reporting, it looks as though one county incumbent will keep her job while another is in for a tough battle just to force a runoff.
Incumbent Carolynn Caudill has an early advantage over her Republican challenger, former County Commissioner Stan Inman. With about 22 percent of precincts reporting, Caudill is winning 59.6 percent of the vote to Inman’s 40.4 percent.
In the other county race, controversial District 2 Commissioner Brent Rinehart was running third to two Republican challengers in the primary. With about 15 percent of the precincts reporting, Brian Maughan had 45.6 percent of the vote, J.D. Johnston had 31.2 percent and Rinehart was running a distant third with 23.2 percent.
If those results hold, it will mean the third new commissioner in the last two years. District 3 Commissioner Ray Vaughan defeated Inman in 2006, and District 1 Commissioner Willa Johnson won a special election last year after her predecessor, Jim Roth, was appointed to the corporation commission.

Maughan ‘pleased’ with early results
With 7 out of 96 precincts reporting, Brian Maughan had a sizable lead in the District 2 GOP Oklahoma County commissioner’s race.
“We’re definitely pleased with the trend we’re seeing so far. I will definitely be in the runoff election or I can avoid the runoff election altogether tonight,” Maughan said.
He decided to run for the seat after incumbent Brent Rinehart was indicted. He said he felt “embarrassed” by Rinehart’s leadership.
“I felt convinced we could do better.”
