Jury finds man guilty in police officer shooting
Jurors reached a verdict Tuesday evening in the trial of Alex Mercado, who was accused of partaking in the ambush of a police officer last year.
Mercado, 18, was found guilty of shooting with intent to kill. Jurors chose a punishment of three years in prison.
Jurors acquitted his mother, Vilma Escalante, 53, of the same offense.
“I’m glad the system works,” said her attorney, Cesar Armenta.
Officer Katie Lawson was shot six times with an assault rifle on Aug. 29, 2010, after helping an Oklahoma County sheriff’s deputy with a traffic stop. She returned fire and survived.

What a joke our justice system has turned into. Prader your an (expletive) and worthless. To bad you didn’t get more than punched out! Something has to change in this country before its to late.
Maybe next time the kid will decide to shoot someone from the jury that was on this case or maybe someone in their family…and maybe this time they wont be lucky enough to survive. This is absolutely the sign that America no longer belongs to Americans
No justice was served. The system did not work. Thank you LORD Officer Lawson has recovered the only positive from this whole ordeal.
What a joke! He would have got more time stealing a car! I’m glad Katie is ok. I can only find some comfort in knowing that this little sissy boy is gonna be someone’s B!+(# in prison!
I agree, our Judicial system is a joke. They will let this family go with much of nothing and put someone in prison for life because they made meth… WTH! Both are dangerous but these people tried to kill her.
This is completely outrageous, a law enforcement officer shot in the line of duty by someone who had intent to kill her and he only got three years!!! And his mothers attorney has the stones to say that he was “glad the system works”. The same system he is sworn to defend and uphold. This is sick and disgusting. It goes to prove that right and wrong are no longer definite, just a gray area where power, money and greed are king and justice no longer exists.
