Southmoore freshman QB thrown into spotlight on 6A playoff stage
Among the multitude of subplots that surrounded Southmoore’s 34-32 squeaker past Lawton Eisenhower in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs was a glimpse of the SaberCats’ future. Well, a very short glimpse, but one nonetheless: Freshman quarterback Tre Edwards made his varsity debut.
Starting quarterback Kendal Thompson was held out of Southmoore’s first series because of a missed practice. That bumped Edwards into the spotlight. And for a kid who was playing freshman football just two weeks earlier, being tossed on a stage as big as the Class 6A playoffs is no small step.
Edwards played well, though things got off to a shaky start. Before he even was able to run the SaberCats’ first offensive play, a timeout had to be called to quell some confusion. His first snap was a mishandled snap in shotgun formation that resulted in a 5-yard loss. The second play was a run for a 1-yard loss.
Nevertheless, the youngster was undaunted and on third down hit running back Andrew Long with a short swing pass that went for 37 yards. Later in the drive, Edwards came through with a 2-yard QB sneak when Southmoore went for it on fourth-and-1 at the 13-yard line.
Four plays later, Long threw a touchdown pass to Kaleb Thompson on a fake field goal. So, though Edwards didn’t get to chalk up his first touchdown, the drive was a success to be sure — 65 yards in 12 plays, including two fourth-down conversions and a touchdown. He was 2 for 2 passing for 46 yards.
Edwards turned things over to Kendal Thompson after that, but he showed reason to feel good about what’s to come after Thompson leaves following the 2010 season.
Moore players dominate Mid-State all-conference team
Moore softball standouts Sydney Garcia, Brianna Nunley, Alex Milligan and Tara Martini all were selected to the fastpitch Mid-State Conference first team.
Westmoore’s Kendra Pierce and Michelle Keppel were chosen for the first team as well. Southmoore also placed a pair of players on the first team in Chelsi Hill and Maria Hilterbran.
Norman North fastpitch softball players Alexis Richardson, Tara Travis and Andrea Smith each were named as well. Norman put a pair of players on the first team as Amy Vanderburg and Breanna Cosme each were honored.
Players of the week: Moore Zone
Moore zone players of the week
Not too hard to choose which school to select the player of the week from considering Southmoore was the only school to play last week. However, selecting just one player from a too-close-for-comfort win over Lawton Eisenhower is tough.
Sam York, kicker: York booted a 30-yard field goal with five seconds left to take the 34-32 victory in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.
Kendal Thompson, quarterback: Thompson didn’t have his most accuarate day, but made huge plays when the SaberCats needed them, including a 16-yard sprint to the 13-yard line with less than 10 seconds to go to set up the game-winning field goal.
Andrew Long, running back: Ran for 126 yards against Lawton Ike before cramps set in. Had a 95-yard TD run and also threw a touchdown pass on a fake field goal attempt.
Austin Brooks, Austin Reece, Labron Brown and Ethan Baker: Defensive standouts each made a big play in the game at key times. Baker made numerous game-altering stops throughout the contest.
Julian Wilson: The senior had his usual strong effort defensively, although there was a whole lot of passes to defend for the OU commitment. Still, he also played receiver and late in the game came in as an emergency tailback, where he ran well and looked anything like a last-gasp fill-in.
Nyko Symonds, receiver: Played well at corner and made two big catches for first downs during the game-winning drive.
