A nice piece on Steve Davis. Concise, astute with what I think are solid conclusions. After reading all the accounts of Mr. Davis's college football accomplishments the most impressive one appears to be his use of 'heart'. He believed in a dream and in a university and brought the two together. That's number one in my book of stats!

Too bad some of this recognition comes after he is gone. Although I doubt it mattered a lot to Steve. The only wishbone QB I ever thought might be better was Holliway. Just strictly wishbone, Mildren wasn't better either. JC and Lott weren't either. Maybe Steve wasn't flashy enough. I don't know how many times I remember him making a pitch while some DE or LB had his helmet stuck in Steve's gut. Great player, great leader and great man.

I saw eight of the nine games that Mitch Gray refers to....I listened to the SC game on the radio...(and the incredible punt return by Joe Washington but that's another story)......OU dominated the game but just couldn't score the winning touchdown......Davis was tough as nails and a winner...the comeback at Lincoln against the Huskers is one of the best in Sooner history.....Davis led the Sooners on 2 long drives to victory.......great quarterback.....

I was just a young man when I saw Davis play so I can't truly say much about his talent but what I know about the man off the field is something stellar something I think Davis will be most remembered for his FAITH!! Steve I didn't know him personally but from the stories I have read and the books I have read it was his faith that made him strong his faith that made him tough his faith that made him honest and his faith that gave him the never give up attitude.I remember back in early part of 2012 football season Steve Davis wrote a letter to Landry Jones and if memory serves me correctly Steve went to Landry's defense I think because Steve knew of the difficulties and the expectations of being a Sooner QB Steve Davis is the man that knew what that difficulty of that leadership was and I think it was Steve Davis's FAITH that mdae him who he was and what he did so GREAT!!!!!

Wow, that is a tough call. One thing about OU quarterbacks, with the exception of just a couple, there has always been one common denominator. Outstanding character.

Difficult job rating them. They were all good in their own way. Barry's QB's were mentally & physically tougher, faster, true field generals. Lead their teams to a lot of big wins. Never really saw a Switzer QB that wasn't a winner, even in a loss. I know Bob's QB's have garnered all the hardware, but still not on the same level as Barry's. His QB's & teams just found a way to win. Guess it is true. Great teams always take on the persona of their coach.

It makes a difference what team you are on. What really matters is championships. Steve Davis quarterbacked OU to two national championships. Is A J McCarron from Alabama a really great quarterback? Probably not, be he is good enough to lead Bama to back to back National Championships ...so far. And that is what really matters.

Would be interesting to hear how Switzer ranks his QBs. Along with Mildren, J.C. Watts could run and pass.

Yep, great athlete, a great man, smart, fast, and always determined. I remember the Kansas game where OU got the 1 loss. OU shot their own foot off, fumbling all over the place. The crowd booed Steve Davis and it was not his play that did it. You had to hand it to Kansas for taking advantage of those turnovers. That was the only blemish. Yes he was one of the best QB's ever. We will miss him. I also loved the way he stood up for Landry, but then he had been there. After all is said and done, I will remember all the good things he did and all the victories he helped bring to OU. Steve Davis was a class-act.
