Steve Davis came to Pryor Oklahoma in the seventies on a preaching tour and he also had a football camp. He told us how he would run five miles a day. I remember thinking that is nuts. Then I joined the army and realize you got to be a little nuts to be a stud. What a gentleman and I will never forget that weekend so much fun.

On Monday morning I received a phone call from a friend in Oklahoma with the very sad news about Steve Davis. I began to reflect on a time long ago. In 1972 when I was the pastor of First Baptist Church in Sapulpa, Steve Davis before he was Steve Davis came to our church to be the preacher for a week-end meeting for young people. Randy Hughes ffom Tulsa also a great Sooner came also to speak as did Kent Shirley from the OSU football team. Kent was the one who called me with the sad news. That weekend was the beginnig point for a wonderful friendship between Steve and I.He called me in the middle of the night one year from Boulder before the Colorado game because he could not sleep. In 1975 my wife and I were Steve's guests for the Kansas game. Steve had the worst game of his career and we lost. Some of the "Sooner Crazies" actually booed Steve. As Landry found out in recent years that just goes with the territory. Then came the last game of the regular season and we beat Nebraska in perhaps Steve's best game of his career. We were sitting on row five in the north end zone. I told my wife I was going down on the field and see if I could make it around to behind the Sooner bench because I knew that Coach Switzer would likely bring Steve out of the game so the Sooner fans could express their appreciation for Steve. I waa able to make it and sure enough Steve came out of the game to a thunderous ovation. After he had been congratulated by his coaches and players I got his attention and we shared an emotional embrace. That surely must have bv been one of Steve's finest hours on earth. My faith tells me his first hour in heaven was even better!

My favorite games and memories of OU football are the 3 seasons Davis quarterbacked the team. OU had so much talent and superstars that went on to great professional careers and the hit on Davis was he was too small and too slow. He was gear that made the offense work. He was tough and gritty and played smart. He did not play outside his talents. He knew his strengths and weaknesses. And was very humble - well, he didn't like the boos, and neither did I. Real fans aren't boo birds. He was the unsung hero.... the national media never gave the credit he deserved, but to me, and I am sure the fans who saw him play, he was a special quarterback with special gifts. As my dad often said, he was a field general and when the fullback and halfback plays got stuffed and put pressure on the quarterback to produce, either in the air or on the ground, Davis responded. I am the same age as Davis...the first OU QB I remember was Bobby Warmack. OU has had a lot of QBs since those days, but no one better than Steve Davis. For what he did in the time he played and the offense he ran relative to the same dimensions of QBs today...passing QBs in passing systems....Davis is the standard. (I wasn't old enough to remember Jimmy Harris so some folks may place him as the standard). Give me players with his heart and commitment every time and the 1 star player will out-perform the 4 star player. They dig a little deeper, play with a chip on their shoulder, and are determined to succeed in achieving their self-imposed goals. White and Bradford got the Heismans, Davis stole your heart and a special place in the history of OU football.
