Agree Kent, hate to say this but OU did same thing in 1950′s but had 125 scholarships.
W 85 you have to hit w great players all time.
Wilkinson did that in 1962 w Joe Don Looney, Cameron university renegeade etal.
It backfired w All kinds if discipline problems with
Looney even though won Big 8 only to get drilled in Orange Bowl by 17-0 , Alabama had Joe Namath & Leroy Jordan.
For first time Bud had to deal w rogue players.
Bryant never had to deal w that ever & Alabama.

I can see good coach like Stoops getting weary of OU supporters unrealistic expectations and leave.
As former OSU player think Stoops is fine man & coach. Lot of supporters suppose their team would rather have wins at all costs .
Stoops is great Shepard for OU.
College FB different today bc of 85 scholarship limit. Only team like Alabama has depth like old days and makes one wonder how many scholarships they actually have & how did they get them to be that deep in talent?

Berry, good analysis and great points. But you missed mentioning one thing. Chip Kelly’s departure may be good news for other programs like Stanford, USC, etc. But it’s bad news for those of us wanting to see the SEC’s string of national titles ended. Chip Kelly’s Oregon Ducks represented the best chance that someone could beat an SEC team. Overall, it’s bad for college football.

The Oregon program will slide a little not because of Chip Kelly leaving or staying. Oregon will slide because the big booster from NIKE brought big money that Kelly was more than willing to spend to bring his program’s talent level up. That he spent it in ways the NCAA frowns on and GOT CAUGHT is why the Oregon program will slip. Why did Kelly leave this year and not last year? Last year at this time he wasnt going to have to testify to the NCAA infractions committee. So, would be cheats at the head coaching level in major college footbal, remember you can follow the lead of Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly. Cheat as much as you can and make your program look great and then take the cash from the NFL and run. Leave your mess behind and don’t worry about it.

Pretty good article until you included Bob Stoops. I don’t think anyone at either OSU or KSU is much worried about
Stoops, and some might even be thrilled if Stoops stays. Can’t say that about UT, since they have fallen onto hard times.
