I wouldn't be so fast to assume that Kent State would have a weak fan base for a BCS bowl. According to Wikipedia, Kent State had 196,000 living alumni as of 2010.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kent_State_University_alumni
Add "42,513 students in the eight-campus system and 28,806 students at the main campus in Kent". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_University
You're looking at close to a quarter million people with direct ties to the university. There's also the factor that Kent State doesn't go to a bowl game every year. So far they've maintained a streak of appearing in a bowl game each century! To me, this means Kent State fans don't have the luxury some do, for instance fans of a school that averages a New Year's Day bowl but is going to a lesser bowl, so they "might as well stay home this year". This could be a once-in-a-lifetime event for Kent State fans. Also, there could be some drainage from Ohio State's fan base, since OSU can't go to a bowl this year. I would imagine that there are many OSU fans who, by all rights, SHOULD be Kent State fans (locals, formerly disgruntled alumni, etc.). I'll be pulling for a MAC school to get into a BCS bowl, whether it's Kent State or Northern Illinois (another school that's larger than some may think -- 25,000 student body, 250,000 alumni) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Illinois_University

I am also a former Golden Flash football player who now lives in New Orleans! You can not believe the phone calls I am getting from Ohio and PA. friends that are comming to the Sugar Bowl when we win on Friday!Oh and Jerry you might want to check your facts before you make a crazy statement about Kent State going broke if they make a BCS game. We are one of the wealthiest schools in the country!!!! Google Kent State dividends from Quartz. after you do pick your favorite school and Kent could probably buy it tomorrow!!!Not all Colleges have to depend solely on their football programs to make money.

As a displaced Sooner living in the Akron/Canton area of NE Ohio for the last 5 years , I can tell you right now, this is no UConn type team or fan base. Football is NE Ohio. These guys pack HOF stadium every week just for a high school game (by comparison Oklahoma would be embaressed). Kent State wil not lose 3 million bucks per some of the responses printed here and the entire state Ohio, Western Penn, and WV will do the same. This just replaced OSU as the bowl for Ohio fans..........wait and see

The Sugar Bowl deserves Kent State. They passed up KState last year to take lower ranked Michigan and Virginia Tech because they thought they could make more money because of a larger fan base. So, I certainly won't feel sorry for New Orleans or the Sugar Bowl if they have a half empty stadium. They also got the Rainbow Warriors a few years ago. Great show but not a very good team. I love watching MAC games on Thursday nights, but they don't have the depth of talent of teams ranked in the top 10. One of the best moves of the new system will be to get rid of automatic qualifiers. But it also means that the SEC will take half of the positions in bowls every year since there is not a limit to the number of teams from one conference that can go to the qualifying bowls. If the playoffs were this year it would probably be Notre Dame-LSU (Cotton) and Alabama-Florida (Chick-fil-A) in the playoff bowls, Nebraska-Stanford in the Rose Bowl, Oregon-Texas A&M in the Fiesta Bowl, FSU-South Carolina in the Orange Bowl, and Georgia-KState in the Sugar Bowl. Six bowl games and six teams from the SEC in those bowls. If people are fed up with SEC fan arrogance now just wait....it is going to get much worse. The only major bowl they won't win every year will be the Rose Bowl. I say just scrap the playoffs and crown the SEC Champion the National Champion and be done with it.

I'm sure Florida fans would roll out to see Kent State in NOLA at a $175 or whatever ticket price. Good thing the Superdome still has the multicolored seats to mask the emptyness. And imagine if the matchup in the Orange is Rutgers/Georgia Tech? 25K tops in Joe Robbie Stadium(still call it that since he had the guts to build it with private funds)
