Hmmm - looks like Broken Arrow - the largest school in the state - is the one east-side school that loses. How could that possibly happen?

Edmond North gave Jenks all it could handle. The score doesn't indicate how close it was at the beginning of the fourth.

Doesn't look like the splitting of the Edmond district into three schools has hurt all that much - all three made the playoffs and two of them made quarterfinals, with decent chances to win.

Let's give the school size thing a rest for a decade or two. Nobody is going to force anybody to split so other schools can be more competitive in one sport.

I like plan A. Although, due to politics either of these would get little attention. I totally agree that the first round of play offs mean nothing. There must be those who feel more teams need to make the playoffs because it makes the kids feel better. Only two teams from a district needs to make the playoffs. This was the way it was when I was in high school.

Wayne, why does "everybody need to feel like they have a chance?" I can guarantee you that even if there were 6 or 7 different teams that had won state over the past ten years, there would still be players on a lot of teams that, if they were honest, would admit they had little or no chance to get the gold ball. Do you think the kids at PC West or US Grant would be more likely to win a 6A title if the 16 largest teams were taken to 7A? Hardly.

Kenny, why is it "dumb" that Jenks and Union have won consistently over the past 16 years? Why does something "have to be done?" I saw Westmoore play at Jenks a couple of weeks ago and saw a darn good team that, if they played ten times at a neutral site, would win several of those games. They very nearly beat Union on its own field last week, too. There's not much of a gap between your school and those at the top.

In comparing to the Texas system of splitting their largest class into large and small during the playoffs, keep in mind that their 5A has far more schools in it than 6A does here. Some of their schools have over 5,000 students and still have losing records. I'd bet that Kingfisher would give Jenks or Union a better game than some 6A schools.

It is funny to read the comments. No problem seeing who is from the Tulsa area and who is from the OKC area. Also, comparing Oklahoma and Texas high schools is a bit ridiculous. Look at the number of high schools in each state. So, you cannot run high school athletics in Oklahoma like you can in Texas. It just doesn’t work. One of the real problems with Oklahoma athletics is the same problem that is with Oklahoma schools. Too many school districts. Florida is a much larger state and has much fewer school districts. Why? School districts are broken up by county. And yes, there are some counties that have large urban schools and small rural schools and it works just fine. The first step is to reduce the number of school districts and then look at changing athletic classes. I would reduce the number of classes instead of making more classes. There are too many “State Champions” now.
