I think a lot of folks on both sides mistook his courtesy interview with OU after the Gomer Jones firing. Texas fans were upset he interviewed (he did it because his alma mater asked), and OU fans were upset that he didn’t take the job (he really was entrenched at Texas).

Emory Bellard told the story of how Royal asked him to help OU OC Switzer with installing the wishbone. Royal explained to him that Fairbanks had asked for help, and it was his alma mater, after all (Bellard believed it a mistake).
