The NFL has rules that favor the offense even more than college football does. One of them is not being able to hit the receiver after he is five yards downfield. In college you can hit the receiver anywhere on the field until the ball is in the air. But if you watch Big XII games they seem to play by the NFL rules and are even more restrictive. Do you ever see the defense play man to man with the corners jamming the receiver on the line of scrimmage let alone bumping him down field? So, instead of complaining about the rules play by the ones that are there. Watch an SEC game. The corners are up playing man coverage and bumping the receivers all over the field. If the OU corners are so good turn them lose and play man coverage and jam the receivers. If not play zone and watch the scores continue to climb. But don't say the rules favor the offense too much. NFL rules are more pro offense and yet the scores aren't skyrocketing.

So the SEC has bad quarterback play....that is why they cannot ever win the Championship Game against teams like Oregon that is a fast paced game. Maybe it just looks like they don't have good quarterbacks because the teams they play have good defenses and the Big XII looks like every team has a great quarterback because no team has a good defense? Georgia has a terrible quarterback? Alabama has a terrible quarterback? Doesn't throw interceptions and has a high percentage of completions. Don't you wish OU had a quarterback like that?

The SEC does have a rep' for strong defenses, and rightly so. But, the offenses in the SEC aren't typically as good as they are in the Big 12, or maybe another conference or two.

Why not allow 15 men on defense and only 11 on offense? Or why not allow 3 downs instead of 4? Or why not just recruit better defensive players and play good hard nosed defense like is played in the SEC by Alabama and LSU? If the problem is the one he mentioned where the receiver stepped off the field and the new receiver stepped on and our defenders weren't ready why not do the same thing. Recruit better and more corner backs and have your defender step off the field and a new one step on. Oh wait, then it becomes your fault and not the rules. Let me see, in basketball the coach should complain because the other team has taller players and that gives them an advantage so you want the rules changed to put the goal in the floor so short player would have an advantage.

If you want to turn things around a bit and back away from the current ridiculous track meets, you don't need to tinker with substitution rules. You just need to roll back the rules that allows offensive linemen use their hands so much. When that rule was introduced it ushered in the era of runaway offenses. Take away a blockers ability to grab the defensive player by the jersey (like it used to be played) and you will see a natural return to the running game and those spread offenses with their extra wide splits will be a thing of the past.
