The Big XII puts some good teams on the field but they don't put that many eyes on TV sets. Other than the OU-FSU game last year there wasn't a good non-conference game. And in hindsight the two teams didn't finish as high as the pregame hype. Like Chris says other than some decent markets in Texas the Big XII is a small market conference. I agree CU and Missouri didn't bring that many eyes to screens but they did bring some and so did Texas A&M. Losing what few markets outside Texas the Big XII had didn't help the conference at all. TCU and WVU really add very little in TV viewership. The Big XII can put good conference games on the air but with a small market eventually the TV money will drop well below the SEC, Big 10 and Pac 12. ABC picking up fewer games every year is a symptom of the problem not the actual problem. See what ABC will be showing instead of Big XII games and that will show what the real problem is. The network heads and bean counters look at Big XII games not as big money makers for them. OU and OSU should have joined the PAC 12 when they had the chance. They could then have tied themselves to a Big Market Conference. Unless the Big XII can generate a larger audience it will eventual fall below the other top conferences in on field performance as well. Remember college football is no longer about win-loss it is about money. And the money comes from the TV networks. They will give the big money to the teams and conferences that can generate the most ad revenue.

WB in my comment I said the following:
Big XII is the top market for the second tier conferences. The first tier is SEC, Big 10, and Pac 12. The second tier is Big XII and ACC. The third tier is Big East and Mountain West. That is based on the TV market and not on field performance.
The networks care FIRST, SECOND and THIRD about viewer numbers and fourth about the quality of the teams. Except for a few markets in Texas the Big XII doesn't have the numbers to excite the networks. And guess what there are no teams wanting to join the Big XII that will greatly improve the market share. That being the case the networks will show teams from networks that have a proven large market. Until UT comes back up that means they really don't care how good OU, OSU, Baylor, TCU, Kansas State, and WVU might be. How many TV set around the country tuned in to watch a great OSU-KState game last year? That was the game that determined the Big XII Championship. Compare that to a Michigan-Wisconsin, Alabama-LSU, or Stanford-Oregon. Exept for a few large Texas markets the Big XII is a TV market backwater. We lost Denver and St Louis the last few years and that doesn't count Houston because UT is still big there and Kansas City because you still have KU. Face it the Big XII market just doesn't excite TV sports executives. They will go with the bottom line numbers. That isn't win-loss that is market share and ad revenue.

How can you say the Big 12 is the third or fourth best conference. You realize the Big 12 was rated number 1 last year, consistently ranked either the 1st or 2nd best conference every year. The Big 12 has 6 teams ranked pre season top 25, the SEC has 6, the Big 10 has 5, the Pac 12 has 3, the ACC has 3, the Big East has 1. 60% of our teams are ranked pre season with another receiving votes.

Round robin means we play everyone, there is no Georgia drawing a favorable schedule and missing half of the ranked teams.

Dumbest comment I have ever read.

It looks like ABC has committed to showing Big10 games to try and compete against CBS and the SEC. They don't think Big XII games will compete nationally against the SEC. It is ALL about MONEY. It does show that ABC doesn't think the so called NEW and IMPROVED Big XII is worth showing on TV. Adding West Virginia and TCU after losing Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, and Texas A&M doesn't make the Big XII as an attractive TV market as it was. ABC realizes it and soon everyone else will as well. And there are NO teams that want to join the Big XII that will improve the TV market.
