My goodness is WV going to be this whiny all the time going forward? Many of us knew it was a mistake to add the distant Mountaineers at the time. Now you’re going to bug us to add other distant schools all the time? Look, you may be used to getting $4M a year from the crappy conference you dominated but we want to maximize our revenue. Shut up or don’t join, please. We really don’t want you.

Chris….IF the Big XII had a Championship Game and IF OSU had won that game and IF that would have been enough to move OSU above Alabama and IF OSU played the game of their lives and IF LSU had a bad night then OSU would be BCS Champions…..IF pigs had wings they could fly……Oregon beat Stanford and won their Conference Championship Game…but Stanford stayed above them in the BCS ratings….so wishful thinking doesn’t make something happen.

You could make the argument that had Oklahoma State played in – and won – a conference championship game lat season, they would have got into the national championship game over Alabama, then would have likely crushed LSU (given the way they played in that game). So it’s possible that not having a CCG cost the Big 12 a national championship.

Mark…I agree IF the Big XII team gets left out of the Football Final Four it TEXAS then expansion will happen. If it some other school then it won’t happen. The reason there are only 10 schools in the Big XII is because ESPN demanded at least 10 schools are they would pay less money. Since ESPN trumps Texas there are 10 schools. Since Texas feels they were unfairly left out of the Big XII Championship Game the year of the three way tie they will NOT allow 12 schools. Until such time as Texas feels they were treated unfairly because of no Championship Game there won’t be one.

What happens the first time a Big 12 champion gets left out of the playoff because, everything else being equal, they didn’t have to play a CCG like the others? If SOS is going to matter in the selection, I could see this causing the Big 12 to expand somewhere down the road.

To Jerry, there was nota need for expansion the last two times it happened either. But the article is on point in on stance, if expansion does not make it easier to get into the playoff, and does not bring in more money it wont happen. I am a UofL fan so obviously I want my team out of the BE and into the B12 and could provide numerous reasons I think we should be invited. But i also realize I am biased in these and may not be objective enough. If we can continue to improve the way we have been in FB and continue to be a top team in BB I think we will eventually get in. ND is going to the B10 or the ACC though.

I say expand to 16 teams and only play 3 conference games a year with no championship game. You could end up with 3 or 4 undefeated teams a year that are co-champions and would have a chance to get at least 2 into the 4 team playoff and 2 more into the other major bowls. Players from 4 teams would get to wear conference championship rings. The main thing is to do what is best for each school. No matter what anyone says that is the bottom line.

How is this quite obvious? The Big 12 CCG helped us at least as often as it hurt us in getting a Big 12 team into the NCG, and having two divisions helped us get a 2nd team into a BCS bowl. Why would it start working differently just because there’s a new 4-team playoff?

It’s true that the Big12 may take a financial hit in the short term by expanding, but in the long term it will pay off big in dollars and stability. Look at the BE a year ago, they were top of the world and they turned down an ACC like 14 million per team per year deal from ESPN. Back then if they just added East Caolina, Navy,UCF along with TCU when they had the chance Pitt WVU and Syracuse would have stayed. They waited too long and now look at the BE meltdown. They are going to be lucky to get 6 or 7 million per team now. This would happen to the B12 if Oklahoma & Texas split to the SEC or Pac 12

I think your assessment is dead on. Why expand unless it enhances the conference in such a way that it is a no brainer. Outside of the three schools you mentioned, only big market teams are worth the trouble. This leaves us Virginia, Maryland and Georgia Tech. I still think that BYU is out because of the Sunday thing. Miami is an untouchable right now because of the real possibilty of oppressive sanctions by the NCAA.
