Every team is named after a city it seems like, so this should not be a suprise. The Detroit Pistons, The Los Angeles Lakers, just to name a couple.

The Oklahoma City Thunder would be the best choice for a name in this case, therefore arguing it would be pointless.

I think I cringe more when I read you referring to the thunder as the Boomers more than the national media referring to us as the Oklahoma Thunder. .you should know better…

Congrats to OKC, but the whole state is on the hook for state tax breaks that were granted to upgrade the former Ford Center. It is churlish and childish of people in OKC to demand exclusive “ownership” of the team.

Besides that, “Oklahoma City Thunder” has about two syllables too many to make a good name. It sounds about like “New York City Yankees” would sound.

Heh! I see that G Houston has made the same point!

I oppose all state-named teams to begin with. They should be named after the city in which the play. For example, everyone in Northern and Central Ohio cheered ferociously for the Cavaliers when LeBron was there, in spite of the team being named for the city of “Cleveland” and not the state of “Ohio.” Now we’ll be cheering as hard for your Oklahoma CITY Thunder even from thousands of miles away.

At least Earvin has not called them thename used by the KIA exec agiving the 6th man award to Harden – the OKC ThunderS.

As Tulsan,I always take exception to my fellow NE Oklahomans who gripe because the team is not called the OK Thunder. OKC did what they needed to do in order to get the team – MAPS / Bricktown /Ford Arena, proactive civic leadership etc. – all years ahead of Tulsa. So shut up about the OK Thunder – it is and should be the OKC Thunder.

Having said that – Berry shut up with the condescending “call it a goodwill gesture to fans throughout the state”.

Earvin and others calling the team the OK Thunder is disrepctful to the team and those that made it possible.

Tulsans and other Oklahomans can be OKC Thunder fans and don;t need any goodwill gestures from you.

This is much ado about nothing. Mostly it’s semantics. “Oklahoma City Thunder” has 8 syllables in it, which is a mouthful and a little cumbersome, so some people understably drop the City part. What’s the big deal folks? It’s just like the New York Yankees don’t call themselves the New York CITY Yankees. I think the same goes for the Mets, the Knicks, the NY Giants and the Jets if I’m not mistaken. I guess they don’t waste newspaper space on those NY team names. Who cares anyway?

People in Green Co just feel left out with the naming, particularly when folks were hoodwinked into supporting every proposition needed to bring the team here. Voters were led to believe it’d be a state team and ole Clay himself said games would be played in Tulsa, yeah one boring exibition game. It was a selfish act and one imagine they’ll be regretting someday. Plenty of teams go with the state name.
