Loved the article on road OOC for the $ec . Do you have a like minded colleague in ACC country? The $ec defense of were so tough we do not have too schedule competitive road OOC's is the old circular logic that bears no critical examination. "When we win it shows how tough we are, when we lose it show's how the conference is ". In the South if you are not a member of the $ec we have long been aware that the $ec does not lose OOC's,if the never before happened event were to happen the $ec team would have been suspended from conference play prior to the kickoff. Therefore no loss was incurred by the $ec. When the aforementioned non event is rectified by an OOC victory for the suspended theoretical team it will be have been restored to the conference. No loss was ever recorded for a Sec team.

The fact that Big12 teams play nine conference games is missing from this analysis. Pretend that the extra conference game is a non-conference game and that adds in TEN additional games against BCS schools.

Viewed this way the Big12 schedule is MUCH tougher.

With the difference in the quantity of conference games taken into account here are the figures:

Games against lower-division teams:
8.9% of total games played by SEC teams are played against IAA teams
7.5% of total games played by Big 12 teams are against IAA teams

Games against non-BCS conference programs:
16.1% of games played by SEC teams are played against a non-BCS conference team
10.8% of games played by Big-12 teams are played against a non-BCS conference team

Games against other major-conference programs:
65.5% of games played by SEC teams are played against another BCS conference team
74.1% of games played by Big 12 teams are played against another BCS conference team

Additionally, Big 12 teams do not have the opportunity to avoid other quality teams within the conference because of the round-robin scheduling. An SEC East team could theoretically avoid Alabama, LSU, Auburn and Arkansas from the West.

None of this excuses weak Big 12 out of conference schedules. It merely serves to expose how pathetic the SEC out of conference schedules are.

As for the recent domination in BCSNC games:

2011: No non-SEC allowed a chance to participate
2010: Legitimate SEC win
2009: Texas's starting QB injured in the first quarter
2008: Texas or USC probably more deserving of spot in game against Florida
2007: An absolute mess of a regular season, legitimate SEC win
2006: Legitimate SEC win

The run is not so much domination as luck.

Interesting read, but as SEC bashing goes...its pretty weak. You will always be able to find little snippets of truth like single jigsaw pieces that seem to suggest that the SEC is overrated or undeserving of the prestige it currently enjoys. That is not remotely close to the reality of the entire picture...fully assembled.
By your reasoning, the guy ranked dead last in the polls would be King. Nobody has a tougher schedule than that. In or out of conference.
You make a big deal about out of conference games like it matters. We don't have a padded schedule built into our conference like 'others' do, we have to schedule our 'breather' games ourselves. We have the toughest schedules year in and year out, of any other conference in the nation while giving our in-state sister institutions a little national exposure. It isn't our fault your little sister institutions are in your conference.
Seriously though...keep it coming, we laugh as we eat it all up, because the answer you seek is so simple...you want to put us in our place? Try beating us.

When you are in the toughest conference in the country does it really matter what your non-conference schedule is? Also, most of these are still better than most of the Big XII non-conference schedules. Also a lot of these schools are playing instate non-conference rivals. To Don...since most SEC coaches don't even want conference games outside their own division to count as conference games this idea will never fly.

Now that we have the Champions Bowl it would be nice to have some cross conference rivalry. If you want to make things really interesting, make the SEC-BIGXII rivalry game count as a conference game. Not unheard of & it would have ESPN gasping for breath (and reaching for their checkbooks).

Your detailed analysis of each Conference's schedules against non conference teams has clearly shown to me that the stronger the in conference schedule, the weaker the out of conference schedule is.

We would all like to see the SEC and Big 12 play a more competitive non conference schedule, but under the current BCS, Bowl oriented, money oriented, vote oriented system, we are stuck with non competitive easy wins for the power conferences since their conference schedules are strong enough to get them to the NC game.

As we head towards a 4 team playoff in College Football we can hope for better non conference scheduling to come, but until there is an 8 team playoff, I doubt it. Of course that would begin to shake up the Bowl System......
