This could be the death knell for the Fiesta Bowl. If the new BCS deal includes the bowls as the first round of the playoff there could be a provision that if the champions of the Big 10, PAC12, SEC, and Big XII are the four teams in the playoffs then the champions of the Big 10 and PAC12 would play in the Rose Bowl and the chammpions of the SEC and BigXII would play in the Sugar Bowl no matter what their final ranking would be. That would be a death knell for the Fiesta Bowl. If the Fiesta Bowl doesn't get a playoff game at least every other year it will just dry up in the desert and blow away.

It is very likely the substantive discussion will evolve into an "amalgamation", NOT simple entry into the Big 12. When you read the issues Florida State President Eric Barron (a former Dean at UT-Austin) presents, it is apparent the Seminoles do not want pared with Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State in a division. Very likely, if it happens, it will be a package entry of assorted ACC teams (FSU, Miami, Clemson, VT, Georgia Tech). Which, assuming this development, probably requires a reworking, read team elimination here, of the West Division of the new amalgamated conference. And, one again, not including the new entry West Virginia, it becomes self-evident that there are only three, with Tech maybe four, economically viable Division I football schools in the Big 12 in the constant evolution of college football to super-conferences.

Zachary is right....it is about $$$$...and TV is money.....his 16 team leagues may be a little off, but the pod system is a quasi answer for geographic problems ....like in the MLB... I think we could possibly see 2 more 16 team leagues in this day of leave no child (team) behind...there will be no givens, they will have to compete on the same grounds as the Bigs to play into the semi-finals. Rankings are about to be more about records and strength of schedule, and winning the conference. No place for independents. Small schools may choose to compete on a Div. II level. It may make more sense $$$ wise for them to do this depending on the financial status of the school's program. 64 teams + one who can play in is what March Madness is all about. I guess there could be some scenario that would allow that to happen in FB. The FB season will become a season of March Madness.

Zach is right on with his 4 super conference 16 team scenario. That is where we seem to be headed. As a Big 12 OSU alum that would be great. 64 teams eligble for the National Championship. My only concern is what happens to the other 50 odd schools that would be left out of the hope of competing for the BCS NC. Do we try to patch together 2 or 3 more 16 team conferences to compete for the NC or let them wither on the vine to become nothing more than spoilers.

Someone joked several months ago that in the future there would be two Conferences, ESPN and FOX. That is exactly what is happening. SEC/Big12 are very tight with ESPN. B1G/Pac12 are very tight with FOX. Maybe just make those two games the semi-finals and the winners play for the National Championship. After the ACC is carved up, I can easily see four 16 teams leagues. SEC adds VT and NCST. That's 16. B1G adds GT, Rutgers, MD, and ND. That's 16. Big12 adds FSU, Clemson, Miami, Louisville. That's 16. Pac 12 adds an East Coast pod, NC, Duke, Pitt, Syracuse. That's 16. Done deal.
