Big 12 football: More madness in conference realignment

West Virginia, and new coach Dana Holgorsen, seemed destined for the Big 12 just a couple days ago. Now, it seems the Big 12 is stumbling over itself once again. AP PHOTO

You can’t blame this one on Dan Beebe.

The Big 12 tells West Virginia an invitation will be forthcoming, the whole danged state celebrates, then the Big 12 says, well, maybe. What a joke. What an absolute joke.

Various reports say most of the Big 12 wants West Virginia, but some prefer Louisville, including OU president David Boren. Fine. Whatever. And forget, for a moment, the obvious solution, which is invite them both and get on down the road to 12 schools in the league.

Can we please some have some honor in the league? Can we please some have some leadership? Can we please conduct business with just a smidgen of decorum?

After this nonsense, it’s clearer than ever that the only the desperate would be interested in the Big 12. After this nonsense, it’s clearer than than ever that getting anyone to trust this leadership, be it interim commish Chuck Neinas or defacto commish DeLoss Dodds or any school president, is fruitless. After this nonsense, it’s clearer than ever that it’s a waste of time trying to talk Missouri into staying.

Talk about turning something good into something rotten. Remember the glee down in Fort Worth when the Big 12 added TCU? Same kind of thing spread over West Virginia on Tuesday; the Mountaineers and their fans were thrilled at the prospect of joining the Big 12. Only to have the brakes applied the next morning.

If West Virginia makes it back to the good graces of the Big 12, rest assured the glee will not be so grand. West Virginia had a revelation. Let this be a lesson learned, Mountaineers. If you get into Conference Chaos, sleep with one eye open.

I think West Virginia will get in, eventually. That’s what the networks want. Louisville-Texas Tech doesn’t attract many eyeballs. West Virginia-Oklahoma State does. At some point, the Big 12 has to listen to the networks — Fox, which just shelled out that huge contract to make the Big 12 feel good about itself, and ESPN, which figures to do the same in a few years.

But to embarrass the Mountaineers like this is unforgivable. I have no idea who to blame. I think Neinas is the least likely suspect. This kind of madness was going on before he arrived and this kind of madness was going on after Beebe was beheaded. So the common denominators are the leaders at the schools.

Out here, we sort of care who. But out in West Virginia, they only care about what. As in, what is going on with Conference Chaos? And the Moutaineers have to be asking themselves. Is this really our only option?

Not to mention the freaking roller coaster of emotions felt here in Provo.

Boren has become senile.

And everyone close to him, must be afraid to tell him that.

Should he be checked for Alzheimers ?

Are you really implying that osu has more fans/appeal that Texas Tech? Good article sans that jab that is untrue and unwarranted. I want wvu, ul, and cincy to get to 12.

As a WVU fan who spent significant time in SEC country, I am astounded that the Big 12 leaders are comfortable behaving this way in public. This would never have happened in the SEC, and if the Big 12 wants to reach that level of prestige, they need to realize that the football product on the field relates to the manner in which the schools conduct their business off of it. Yesterday I was excited about the Big 12 invite. Today I hope that WVU decides that it doesn’t want to conduct business with people who mistake character flaws for gamesmanship. Good luck.

Honor? When you are killing another conference? Don’t think so. The SEC never wooed (or even asked for that matter) Missouri or Texas A&M. They left the conference of their on volition. If WVU and/or Louisville sought out membership that would be one thing, but to go raiding sub-par conferences for teams was never honorable, so why would you expect anything else to be?

AP reported that WV never had an invite. Sounds more like premature celebration.

While we weren’t privy to the actual conversation, what I have seen reported is that there was an offer and WVU accepted. Big 12 leaders have since backtracked and said it wasn’t a “final offer.” Sounds shady to me.

Glad were gone. Sounds to me like Dodds wanted it to happen so he leaked it before there was a vote among the schools. Dodds choice of WVU is most certainly driven by the four letter. In the end this is all to prop up the almighty Long Horn Network.

OU and OSU should call Mr. Slive and inquire about going to 16.

People, including you like to blame Texas and dodds but Texas rarely speaks on the matter. It’s the other guys who are dying to have their names in the paper. Boren, t. Boone, Hance, tubberville.. Just ridiculous…those guys don’t know when to shut up. People will keep putting a microphone in front of them as long as they continue to blab. Speaking of t Boone…seriously? Can we stop asking a donor what he thinks?

The chance to be part of a major conference is fleeting, and both UofL and WVU understandably are leaping at the chance. The Big 12 is still a clusterfluck of egos (Texas/OU) but it’s better than the Big East, which is run by a bunch of northeastern basketball people with little interest or competence in anything else.

I get the short-term TV ratings issue, but UofL will recover its football program, our bball program is right there with Kansas, and our other non-revenues are terrific. The institution as a whole has improved dramatically in the past 10 years and should be seen as a ‘growth stock’. I know that’s “not how realignment works” but the B12 leadership has seen something up to this point.

Louisville fans are very excited about the prospect of being in the Big 12, esp. if we get to bring along our Ohio Valley rival(s).

West Virginia got the same offer TCU received (and accepted), The TCU deal was done in two days.

The same was about to happen with West Virginia but the Big 12 offer to the Mountaineers was revoked. That’s not conjecture, its fact.

If everyone wasn’t already able to see that the Big 12 conference is an absolute joke, this situation should prove it. Colorado, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and Missouri should be given an extra measure of support from their fans just for leaving this dysfunctional conference.

It is also clear that ANY school considering the Big 12 is doing so at their own peril. If (actually when) Texas decides they’ve had enough, OU and OkState will follow. Then what? It’s a recipe for disaster.

Can you imagine the joy in the conference offices of the PAC, SEC, ACC, and B1G over this debacle?

Have been a WVU fan all my life and went to school their, feels like someone came up to shake your hand and then sucker punched you in the stomach.

I really can’t feel to bad for WVU. As a Boise State fan, I kind of feel like the guy driving a used Subaru who sees that one guy from high school who became a plastic surgeon and he’s whining because the economy isn’t right for him to switch out his two year old Mercedes for a new one.

My bet is that it was Stoops who didn’t want W.Va. After all they beat his squad in a BCS bowl game a few years back did they not? And handily as I recall it. They sacked Jason White, or whomever the QB was, like 8 or 10 times. Hey I was scanning the web this evening to see what the nation’s Sports writers are saying about the Cowboys, and there is lots of negative stuff on the Defense so they have many folks to convince still, but it was SI’s midseason top 25 NFL draft projection that really caught my eyes. I believe it was just after OSU’s bowl victory over Arizona that you Tramm, and your OU hoard predicted that there was no doubt Blackmon had permanently harmed his draft value by acting the idiot by running down the goal line before scoring. Recall? I retorted here that that was ridiculous. Well, you were right . . SI only has him at #4! He’s behind the Luck guy, the Alabama RB Richardson and I think the other guy is a DB or DL. So by far the first WR to go in their estimation. Why don’t you practice getting over the fact that OSU football has arrived so you can begin to relieve yourself of the reflexive urge to be critical of all things Poke. The national attention is making your bias all the more obvious, and weak, if not unprofessional. Oh BTW, you may want to begin by analyzing the OSU defensive stats and point out to the nation that ranking by yardage yielded is a very misleading methodology. OSU’s D is on the field for more minutes and series than just about anyone. If you divided the yardage given up by the opposing offenses’ time of possession I’m sure a much more accurate picture of the effectiveness of the O-State defense will emerge.

At what point will the OU administration realize that staying with OSU is like cutting off your leg to keep your bike and go to another conference!!! This is BS and if WVU still goes to the B12 then the Big East needs to fold its FB tent and give up…

I couldn’t agree more. If UT and OU don’t want 12, because of a conference title game; then go to 11. The Big Ten did it just fine for over 20 years. Adding both WVU and Louisville would add great stability to the Big 12. Not to mention the fact that it will probably end the Notre Dame membership in the BIg East. They could move their non football sports to the Big 12. Then you have an even number of schools playing in the conference for all sports, but football. I’m so thankful so many of the media members and fans can figure this out. Can you do all of the fans a favor? Ask the Big 12 presidents why they haven’t already sent the invites out to both schools?

WVU fans are the reason that SEC,ACC and now The Big 12 is having second thoughts. WVU fans behavior has been really bad on National TV and I have said all long that these type of acts hurt WVU on the National level. LSU playing at WVU a LSU fan was hurt by WVU fans, these type of fans are out of control and I think WVU should thanks fans and students alike. UofL although not sexy in football, by all means fit better for The Big 12, if I was in The Big 12 shoes I would tell both sorry no dice and go and get BYU and be done with this. Big East is dead, and WVU should be left for dead would serve them right due their out of control fan base. just my thoughts.

@duckfan, you just don’t even know what you’re talking about. The wife of the man who was beaten publicly stated it had nothing to do with the football game. And, of course, you don’t care about that because is so much easier to be lazy and just believe everything you read which, mostly, is myth. Perhaps you should read the letter from an LSU fan who attended that game and stated that the reputation, in so many words, was unwarranted and unfair. Maybe you should be more concerned with the behavior of your players and coaches before you worry about other people’s fans?

The comment by oregonduckfan is 100% false. An LSU fan was injured after the WVU-LSU game, but it had nothing to do with the game. The wife of the fan publically stated such after reading that WVU fans were being blamed. As to the issue at hand, the behavior of the Big 12 president who caused the offer to be withdrawn after it was accepted is reprehensible. And yes, the offer was made and accepted. The author is right on target.

Completely understand why Missouri is leaving now despite the fact that they will get killed on the field.

Duckfan. Have you ever been to a Louisville game or a WVU game? I have been to both. NO COMPARISON!!! Louisville fans will not say a word until the game is over then, if in their favor, they show zero mercy. Also, USF vs WVU in 2008, friday night game, my 7 year old son was called a Mountain F’ing Qu@@r by a middle aged USF fan. I took my son out of the stadium 3 minutes into the 3rd quarter. At a 2007 or 08 game at Heinz, I was searched by Pitt Security at the gate because I had chapstick in my pocket. The things they said were prosecutable. WVU may have some rowdy fans, but unless you travel to it and other schools, keep your trap shut. BTW, hows the Boise State DE’s chin?

Ouch, duckfan just got slammed with that player/coach incident.

As someone who has attended games at both Oregon and WVU, I can say with all authority that the WVU fans were hands down the better fans. My family and I were treated HORRIBLY at Oregon. Cursed at, intimidated, etc. WVU fans welcomed us and some even invited us to tailgate with them. No contest. Duckfan is FOS.

If the Big 12 adds Louisville instead of WVU, they might as well add South Alabama and Western Michigan, too – compared to WVU, Louisville is second rate. Who cares if it’s a couple hundred miles closer?

Ignore “oregonduckfan”.He is a dusgruntled former WVU fan and has been trolling message boards for years trashing the program with mis-spellings and failed logic.

Gary, you really need to move on and clean up your life.

@MSUJim. Thanks for that and let me just add the hospitality in Starkville was top notch and a model for all schools to follow.

@Mr. Tramel, thanks as well. I just wish it would sink in to those in positions which hold great sway over the athletic programs and universities that are dear to us all. I was excited about joining the Big 12 but now, I’m torn. Certainly, I hope we still get in but I fear we’re simply trading one dsyfunctional relationship for another. How did things get so bad in the Big 12? It has such great athletic tradition and universities which I once held in high esteem. Have greed and envy so permeated the fabric of our institutions of higher learning [sic] that we’re reduced to this? Really?

All of these so-called pillars of advanced learning, the university presidents, should be ashamed, every last one of them, for what THEY have allowed college football to become. An entity dedicating itself to the principles of greed, avarice, and exclusivity.

“it’s clearer than than ever that getting anyone to trust this leadership, be it interim commish Chuck Neinas or defacto commish DeLoss Dodds”

Neinas is only another tool wielded by Dodds. Has anyone else considered the possibility that Dodds intentionally torpedoed the move of four Big 12 teams to the PAC 12 this year? The report by a PAC 12 insider was that the PAC 12 commissioner was “appalled” by Dodds” arrogance. Doubt DeLoss would willingly give up his Big 12 fiefdom to move to any conference.

As a WVU fan, I hope we say “no thanks” to the Big XII. Would rather go independent again than deal with this type of behavior.

As for Louisville, it sounds like the senator from Kentucky is going to have some explaining do to.

I think Boren’s goal is to get 12 teams in Big 12.

It makes no sense to take Texas on in an uphill fight. I’d call this a spark to keep more expansion alive. The solution could end up being offering both schools.

Is there any wonder why other parts of the country look at this conference and just shake their head in disbelief? There constantly appears to be way to much talking to the media before decisions are truly made and completed. It just feeds the perception of incompetence and dysfunction within the Big XII.

“I hope WVU stays in the Big East.” The Big 12 seems to be in no better shape than the Big East, and has more that its share of, behind the scenes, intrigue.

Berry, I certainly enjoyed reading your article on this Big XII conference alignment fiasco. As another WVU fan, I was ecstatic on Tuesday after hearing that West Virginia might have been pulled into a life raft from the sinking Big East only to have my joy shattered come yesterday morning.

I certainly don’t know what the end result will be but I would love to see WVU playing against better quality football opponents in the Big XII versus staying in whatever remains of the Big East. Looks like travel would be an issue either way if the Big East adds Houston or SMU or Navy or Boise State.

That whole conference is nothing but maggots and vermin – and then there’s Satan down in Austin pulling the strings.

YIPPEE!!!!

College football and athletics have lost a huge amount of credibility this year. And I’m sure there are more antics to come ! How did it get this bad this fast?

As a WVU grad, would much rather seen WVU go into the SEC! Was not happy about joining the Big 12…….too far away!

I was very excited about the thought of joining the big chaos, but now that I see how this conferrnece is ran, I am having second thoughts. What a joke.

Well writen article that helped this errs fan see the light

It is what it is. Here at WVU we have all of our eggs in the Big 12 basket. Sad day, just 2 days ago I was jumping up and down at the thoughts of playing in the Big 12. Now, who the heck knows? My wife sure hopes this ends soon, so I can get back to my yard work, that’s the only thing I know for sure.

Signed
One frustrated WVU fan

You answered the question of who is responsible in the article, you just don’t want to admit it: Boren. The same one who basically ran Missouri out of the conference by his flirtation with the PAC, only to find out that without Texas, OU isn’t welcome. He needs to stay out of things.

If the Big 12 (10,9,8) doesnt get back to 12 teams, we will be talking about conference realignment forever (or at least until they completely implode). I say invite WV and Louisville. That brings us to 12 and when/if Missouri finally craps and gets off the pot, then the Big 12 knows it will need to invite someone else. Then invite BYU, Boise State or Cincinnati and let them see its not quite as easy to win football games when you have to play OU, Texas and OSU every year.

“Honor, decorum, leadership, and B12″. One of these words does not belong, one of these words is not like the others.

I blame the media for most of this mess. Even grizzled old vets of the newspaper days have fallen trap to the Twitter world. Any beat writer or blogger can have a “source” that has the latest juice. When this doesn’t happen…it’s the Big 12′s fault.

I enjoy Twitter, I check it constantly. I’m not any smarter than the national writers but I know to take the Twitter rumors with a grain of salt. When I see Chuck Neinas at a press conference, I’ll believe the information. Until then I’ll continue watching the Twitter rumors flow.

How Okies..get your crackpots under conrol…Can believe we could have went to the pac without y’all now look how you act.

Thanks for the blog–very insightful. I was hoping that the announcement of WVU’s entry into the Big 12 was accurate. As well, I was hoping that invitations would follow for Louisville and Cincinnati. Now it appears that Mitch McConnell (who incidentally looks like the Maryland Terrapin) and David Boren want to block WVU’s entry. Why not just add all three schools, and have a Big 12 literally? Oh, money! If the WVU invitation is permanently rescinded, then it is one of the biggest (top 12) lose-lose fails in this entire conference realignment travesty.

Sorry you’re having to put up with this, WVU fans. There’s a reason the Big 12 has already lost three members and is on the verge of a fourth. Don’t be surprised by the backtracking, the Big 12 is known for it. One day they say they don’t need Texas A&M as long as they have Texas, and the next they’re begging them to say. The same can be said for Missouri, and now they’ve taken back their word on you. That is no way to gain the loyalty and trust of current and future members. The Big 12 is an unstable, unfair and undevoted conference that thinks it all revolves around one school. It’s just not worth it. Get out WVU while you still can.

Good point made by SC Cy…Welcome to the 24 hour news cycle…where any jerk can type a rumor and it is accepted as fact.

It’s pretty clear that adding WVU by itself is unlikely. What’s more likely is a packaged deal of WVU and UL. This eases some travel burdens and stokes the fires between the two schools.

The SEC took their sweet time with A&M. And who can forget the “We will take you as long as nobody sues” debacle? LOL. Be patient. The Big 12 will get both of these schools.

Trammel, like every other sports writer these days, bases his stories on pure speculation. He does not have ANY proof that the invitation was extended, he is only guessing…even admits it when he says “various reports say”. He doesnt have any factual evidence the offer was even made..because it wasnt! So it is pointless for him to ask the Big 12 to be more professional in handling its business when he is the very one creating a story about this situation that didnt even exist! If you want professionalism and responsibility in your business, please look in the mirror first! This whole realignment mess is a sports writers hayday because all they have to do to get people to read their stories is to cite a “high ranking offical” or “someone with knowledge close to the situation”. They know it will not be checked out because things are fluid and changing daily…so who needs responsible journalism here…he is selling newspapers! Facts are pointless.

The invitation to West Virginia to the Big12 was cited by an anonymous source. I think if anyone is to blame, it’s the media for jumping on this before an official statement was made.

So the Big 12 is stopping itself from expanding this time. Why won’t OU, OSU, KU, KSU, and ISU take charge of their own destiny. Nebraska, Colorado, A&M and Missouri had enough and its time for the remaining non obliged to the horn schools to do the same.

The heck with Provo. No body wants BYU in the league anyhow. Here in KS, everything we are hearing is that this is David Boren’s doing. I am with you Barry. Let’s get this thing done. Tell Missouri they have 48 hours to decide. Then go get W. Virginia, Louisville and Cinn. Divide the conference into an east/west with WV, Louisville, Cinn, Iowa St., TCU and OSU (or KSU and KU) in the east and the rest in the West. That makes more sense than going west for anyone.

Twitter has certainly contributed to the promulgation of some ridiculous rumors, but this fiasco can’t be laid at Twitter’s feet.

These stories were printed in the mainstream media who were quoting their own sources “with knowledge of the situation”.

Keith on October 27, 2011 @ 12:18 pm

“Trammel, … He doesnt have any factual evidence the offer was even made..because it wasnt!”

How do you know this, Keith? Are *you* an insider, or are you engaging in baseless speculation yourself?

@ Duck Fan..Laughing my butt off. A duck fan calling out anyone’s fan behavior is a joke. If you polled the 10 members of the PAC without Utah or Colorado, because they just haven’t experienced it yet, the vote would be 9-1 saying Oregon fans are the worst by far. Oklahoma probably witnessed some of that when they visited there a few year ago.

The “Boomer Sooner Satin Boren” doesn’t want another school to beat them like WVU. They do not like competition that’s why they wanted to go to PAC12 because there are basically two teams and sometimes three to worry about of their same caliber, but to add four or more shame could only come from it in the likes of last week’s beat down. Why add more completion cry, cry, cry, “Give us someone easy to beat”. When Boren went on his Sadie Hawkins romance move to the PAC 12 he found out fast that he and his in state partner were not wanted without TX because the dollars do not add up in the PAC 12’s favor with all of OK. Why would Texas get rid of LHN when it adds more revenue to their program than anything that OK can come up with or the PAC 12 can pay?
The numbers tell the real story! The total population of OK is 3,751,351 as of 2010 census, and many do not even have a TV? Yet the population of Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown alone is the sixth-largest metropolitan area in the United States with a population of 5,946,800 as of the 2010 U.S. Census. That exceeds the entire population of OK by 1.2 Mil. the entire state of Texas as 25.14 Mil people. Granted that many of them do not have a TV either, but the numbers look much better to any media outlet than OK does.
So Boren and you Boomer’s get over yourself and shut up you are the little guys with the big mouth. When most of your team stops coming from Texas you can brag about being the OK Boomer Sooner’s. Otherwise you will be known as win or lose, the jealous revenue dependant little brother, expecting a hand out from big brothers Texas, Texas Tech and Baylor who wield the population and revenue sword in their favor. We can now even add TCU to that equation. Oh by the way OSU Pokes we like yall, but can you get your President and AD to get your booster T Boone to shut up and stop speaking for you or just give him the job?

AS A WVU FAN THE BIG 12 TARGETED WVU TO REPLACE MIZZOURI OR TO JOIN THE CONFERENCE THIS IS SO WRONG OF THE BIG 12 TO DO WVU LIKE THIS WHO THE HELL IS IN CHARGE OF THE BIG 12 MITCH MCCONNELL?

bring em both! U of L brings a overall nice atheletics program. WV and U of L are huge rivals. I would watch that! And I sure would watch U of L play kansas in Basketball. We have to remember this aint just about football. Make a conference where football and basketball are huge, and watch the c-notes come rolling in!

hey david boren are you afraid the mountaineers will kick the sooners collective butts again?

Many of you have asked why the Big XII won’t get it’s act together and invite both Louisville and W.Va? Well, the answer is simple. Dodds hasn’t given his approval on the matter. OU, OSU, TTU, no one, matters in the decision. It will happen if, when and only when Texas gives it permission to happen. Texas is directing this play and that is why 4 schools have bolted as fast as they could to get away permanently from them. If I were in any of the schools Deloss, um, I mean the Big XII, was flirting with, I’d block their calls, return their mail unread and send all emails to the spam folders. You do not want any part of this conference and Texas only wants to hold it together long enough to see if the Longhorn Network will take off so they can go independent. It is that simple. Run and Run FAST!

David Boren has taken OU to great places. He was a great US Senator and he has incredible vision. However, his time has come to an end. As a life long Sooner fan and season ticket holder for about 5 years I’ve had enough. Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri and Texas A&M are gone. OU could have been the school to keep it all together but didn’t because of this false illusion that we have to be tied to Texas in order to be a success. It’s really very small minded and short sighted. I’m not going to pretend anymore. Boren needs to be gone!

The Big 12 chaos is embarressing. It is worse than a divorce.

Hey Big 12,

Would you please keep the meeting of the minds behind closed doors instead of in the media. It really makes you look incompetent when you continue to change your position. Find a solution and stick with it before announcing it to the world. Also, one other suggestion; Conferences to me are about rivalry, let’s keep the schools close in proximity so the fans are more vested in the conferences games. How many fans are going to have the opportunity to travel to games that are thousands of miles away. It makes no sense to include these schools when there are plenty of good schools with great football fans and tradition closer to the geographical area.

This is a case of wounded pride. Boren is still upset the PAC 12 wouldn’t take OU. He has finally seen that the ONLY power in the Big XII is Deloss Dodds. Dodds wants WVU so Boren is trying to stop it. Is there any real difference which team the Big XII robs away from the sinking ship of the Big East? The Big XII has to have 10 teams to keep its ESPN and FOX TV contracts. So, they replaced A&M with TCU and will pick some school to replace Missouri. If 4 schools leave a conference within two years isn’t somebody going to look at what the problem is and do something about it? The problem is Texas arragance with LHN being the straw that broke the camel’s back. I still say Texas is just trying to keep the Big XII going until the next round of BCS negotiations. They will then go independent in football and get the same sweetheart deal Notre Dame has. Take a look at what the Big XII will look like then. A conference on a par with the Mountain West or maybe the ACC except the ACC will have MAJOR TV markets all up and down the east coast. TCU in DFW area will be the ONLY major market for the Big XII. TV revenue will plummet like a rock.

“I think West Virginia will get in, eventually. That’s what the networks want. Louisville-Texas Tech doesn’t attract many eyeballs. West Virginia-Oklahoma State does.”
Seriously, this comment clearly takes a vast amount of any validity to your article and throws it out the window. Five days after your beloved Sooners are defeated at home by Tech you write this? LOL…But really, you think OSU on a yearly basis is a bigger draw that Tech…..really? Quit showing your Oklahoma Barry!

Good article except for the cheap shot at Tech. Don’t think for a moment that OSU has more fans than Tech. I’m glad OSU is having a good year.

Go Cards!

2 comments: either let the big 12 die a natural death or hire Tboone as commis. If he can turn OSU into a winner, no telling what he could do with the big 12 (11, 10, whatever)

I would not doubt that Boren is in the middle of this fiasco also. He just cannot keep a lid on it. Now OU is confused by a Big XII discussion on a conference tv network. We could have gone to the SEC with honor, but nope, OU is going to have it their way.

As I understand, Texas wants WV. So now, you blame Deloss Dodds, when in fact, it is Boren and Pickens who are screwing WV?

Yes blame it on Texas. BTW Nebraska and A&M voted for unequal revenue sharing every time it was put to vote. Blame Texas for that too.

From 2004, Big 12′s teams have made over $30 million from 3rd tier media rights. Texas take during that time? less than $400,000. So when Texas sells it’s rights for $300 million, suddenly it’s unfair? Nebraska, A&M, OU, OSU even Kansas voted against granting 3er tier righs to the conference. go ahead, blame Texas for that too.

Mitch McCONnell is a sneaky little creep as we all know here in Kentucky. Some of you are suggesting UofLol be rewarded for this kind of behavior? I’d say Ditch Mitch. Tell him to get back to his job of grandstanding and sniping at the president. Don’t forget the ancient Chinese proverb something like be careful what you wish for as you might just get it. UofLol had ignorant fans, small tv market already covered up by UK, most income comes from beer sales (which Big12 doesn’t allow), ncaa sniffing around the FB program (google Clint Hurtt) and a BB coach that can’t keep his pants on. Have fun with that Big 12!

the leaders of the big 12 are stupid….

As a Husker fan all I can say is “We told you so.”
We have pain for our Big 8 brothers but not for the Big 12 dominated by the sow in Austin.

Actually Louisville-Texas Tech would probably draw as many eyeballs as West Virginia-Oklahoma State only because Tech typically has top ABC ratings and OSU rarely if ever does. It would even out.

Hey, CT, you are the real loud mouth here. I don’t suppose that you would exchange all the fine Texas young men attending OU, for the native Oklahoman, All-American OU QB Darrell K. Royal that you named your football stadium after down there in Austin would you? Be quiet boy.

I started reading the Pittsburgh Post Gazette (good reporting)and ended up here. I am impressed with the article and the discussions. Mature, intelligent comments. I know nothing about conferences, but I am quickly learning. Loosing Pitt from the BE is a tragedy for an EER fan. No more backyard brawl. Then I got excited about being able to play OU in fb and Kansas in bb and then learned the other teams in the B12 and was real pleased to think we would be playing against these caliber of teams. Sooner or later I would stop grieving over Pitt by developing new rivalries – and now, I just don’t know what to think. Maybe we should stay in the BE. Anyway, thanks for the insightful posts and best of luck to all of us cause politics and money are making college football ugly.

Dear West Virgina is it clear now why this confrence is on the verge of loosing a quarter of their original Big 12 membership in a little over a year? Our current members seem like they cant get out of here fast enough. Now this last little misstep by the confrence leadership im sure is just giving you worlds of confidence. Could be worse, you could be OU, nobody wants you without UT…or with OSU……

As a Mizzou fan, I was against a move from the Big 12. I was hoping Mizzou could stay in and go to 12 teams, like we had before, though I knew Texas and Oklahoma wanted to keep it at 10. They made concessions, and started talking about a big 12 network… then the West Virginia debacle, and OU President coming out saying “WHAT Big 12 Network?”, he wants a Sooner Network. All teams for themselves, no league loyalty. I think I’m now glad Mizzou is leaving like Nebraska and Texas A&M, although I will miss the Kansas rivalry. To get away from Texas/Oklahoma dysfunction is a good thing, and hope the other small fry can get away from this toxic collection as quickly as they can. I pray for Okie State too.

Yes Sakman I’m starting to see the light.

Do you not proof read your articles?

@Keith…The Big 12 provided WVU a copy of the press release the Big 12 was going to send out…I guess you could consider that evidence.

The Big 12 needs aggressive and decisive action. It has the member schools already to succeed on the field.

It will now likely add BOTH Louisville and WVA which is a very good move. Might as well add Cincy and get back to 12 and Conf Champ game. Dodds is against it but he is also missing the forest for the trees. They should examine a split that is more east/west than north/south imho. Maintain a rival game every year that allows biggest rivals to face off even in separate divisions.

As to the SEC stuff, whoever posted that is very misinformed. Slive was talking about pulling in Big 12 members 2 years ago. The only reason they have shown restraint (while not turning down a single big 12 member) is the very real threat of lawsuit.

Each conference wants to end up one of the big 4 with a sure place in any final 4 set up. The Big 12 has more than enough talent to warrant that and now needs to grab a few more schools to insure it happens.

The only reason Dodds wants to add WVU is because the BIG XII must have 10 teams to keep its current TV contracts. Dodds must keep the Big XII at 10 teams until the next round of BCS negotiations. He can then have UT go independent and keep ALL its TV rights and get the same cushy deal as Notre Dame of finish in the top 12 and go to a BCS bowl. Much easier for them than actually winning a conference title. They can play Rice, UTEP, North Texas, Lousiana Monroe, and SMU every year. No losses even against poor teams will get them in the top 12 and a BCS Bowl game EVERY year.

@Jerry, how has that worked out for ND so far?

With all the confusion coming from the Big 12 this past week I am hoping that WVU tells Big 12 NO THANKS we do not want to join!!!!! This conference has no honor in keeping their word and who could ever trust them.

[...] still doesn’t change the fact that the Big 12 looked ridiculous. Really, really ridiculous. Can we please some have some honor in the league? Can we please some have some leadership? Can we [...]

When you (WVU) play with the Devil (UT, Dodds and their tool Neinas, and to a lesser degree Boren) you get burnt by fire.

It is outrageous what the Big 12 just did to WVU. Talk about absolutely incompetent management and decision making.

But sadly WVU has no option but to the BIG 12 and you guys will need to do anything and everything you can to get in. If you do get in you will become the prison biatch of UT like the rest of us. You might as well get used to it.

Waive to Mizzou, aTm, Nebraska and Colorado. Lucky ducks have moved on to better places and we are stuck with this idiocy.

tell me again, berry. how were you referring to the sec a couple of months ago? rats nest? den of thieves?

I totally agree with the premise of your article, but to saythat not many eyeballs want to see Texas Tech vs. Louisville is just funny! In case you haven’t studied your geography, Lubbock has more population therefore more TV’s than Stillwater. I realize Tech put a knot on the Sooners head but media sour grapes is extremely unproffesionable. I guess it’s just to be expected.

Why doesn’t the Big Xii go all out and invite Cincinnati, Louisville, Southern Miss, Houston or New Mexico, Colorado State and Wyoming. Be the first BCS conference to expand to 16 and change the name to the Big 16. Create two 8 team divisions – the Northeast consisting of Cincinnati, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville, Oklahoma State, Southern Miss and West Virginia, and the Southwest consisting of Baylor, Colorado State, Houston or New Mexico, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech and Wyoming.

Why not go after Boise State and Louisville if MIZZOU DROPS WE WILL BE BACK TO 12 ns if they stay snag airforce and wyoming making it a super conference Big 16
