Just because you start an investigation doesn't mean you automatically have the evidence you need. You still haven't said where the NCAA started their investigation?
I agree Coach Stoops has handled things perfectly. We are fortunate to have him in this age of year round hyper pressure on all in a program to produce results while simultaneously dealing with a microscopic ticky tacky NCAA. Once again I say the NCAA behaves in a manner detrimental to the game.

On the other. I see fa big difference in the scale of the two big OU offenses (gasoline theft and being paid an inflated amount while at practice and not actually working) vs. Ohio States - 00 bucks from a booster and the coach being held responsible for what a player does with his own possessions.

Okay, Clyde...believe what you want. If you want to believe that Stoops and Boren and the NCAA knew about the tip from the TAMU kid in late 2005 and then never confronted their starting QB with the evidence until April 2 of 2006...feel free.

They spent 200,000+ on a law firm in Indy that specializes in NCAA compliance...beginning in 2005. You don't hire those types of law firms until you are pretty sure you have a problem. Stoops said he never asked Bomar about it until late Spring in 2006...why? Because he didn't want to know. In addition, instead if confronting Bomar with the evidence already gathered (and getting to the truth) he just asked Bomar if it was true...and Bomar lied, per Stoops.

In addition, OU told the NCAA there were three players involved (after the 200,000 investigation)...NCAA says four...OU appeals...NCAA says four...OU says "Oh yeah, there were four". Some investigation...OU should have asked for their money back.

Stoops never wanted to know the real answer from Bomar until he had no choice...the only difference is that Tressel had an email trail and the timing for Stoops was such that he never had to sign the NCAA Ethics Document (September every year) while this was going on.

Silver lining for Stoops is that the NCAA was so proud of him for being oblivious/ignorant to the fact that 9 of his players were working at the same booster's car dealership that they gave his precious wins back...

I beg to differ. Tramel is a homer. When's the last time you recall him writing something seriously honest about Sumner? They cheated every every non publicly schooled grade schooler in Nobel County for decades and his dad was superintendent when it was going on and he's been covering it up ever since. Otherwise he's a fun an interesting read -- and seems to be well informed. But the track meets at Sumner are something he should be ashamed of.

It's easy to see who's got an axe to grind with OU and Bob Stoops. If you don't like OU or Stoops, then put your bias aside and make a reasonable point. If you can't then go to a message board. When OU had the proof it needed to accuse Bomar, they told him to take the train. If the NCAA told Stoops to "deal with it or we will..." then the NCAA would not have imposed sanctions on OU after OU let their starting QB go one month before the '06 season started. OU handled it but that didn't mean the NCAA wasn't going to, also. If you can write a better article than Tramel then go apply for his job. Tramel is not a homer, and doesn't write like one either.

Tramel - All your column shows is that Stoops handles "players getting caught" better than Tressel. That doesn't mean that OU's program or Stoops is clean. I would imagine if SI were to investigate OU they would find that Peterson and others were treated by boosters in much the same way the Ohio State players were.

John,

Since when does an Indianapolis law firm doing work for OU also constitute an NCAA investigation as you incorrectly stated?

Even if OU's investigation started in December 2005 it hardly proves their investigation was complete or had drawn its conclusions (or that Stoops had any knowledge of its final conclusions) until the time he kicked Bomar off the team at the beginning of August 2006. You say "They knew in the spring." Show me.

Exactly when did the NCAA present Stoops with an ultimatum; in what format? Was it a letter, a formal or informal inquiry, perhaps a phone call of which you have first hand knowledge? Absent that, you have no evidence. There's a big difference between what you want to believe and what you can prove.

Finally, the Peterson BRSI on the three year old Lexus was documented by the dealership and the NCAA to be a standard practice for a lot of non-athletes, whether you choose to believe that or not.

They knew in the Spring...latest, at least enough to confront Bomar and Quinn...but Bobby wanted to see if he could get it to slide. NCAA said either you deal with it or we will.

All of the big time schools could be brought down if they investigated them. OU's track record of Big Brother looking at them is a rap sheet no one wants. It is always just a tree shake away from finding some more infractions. It the culture at OU and Stoops is up to his neck in it. Its just a matter of time before they either admit that college football is just a prep school for the NFL or get rid of the BCS and all the big money lobbyists and go with a playoff system and quit hiding behind all the noble statements. Its sheer hypocrisy of the highest degree coming out of all the coaches and administrators.
