Firing Capel seems awfully premature. By all accounts, the guy knows how to coach. That he had two down years hardly qualifies for a firing, right after he got to the final eight. That does not send a good message for possible succesors. Capel works in the shadow of a football school, and that is a liability. He should have been given at least another year before his tenure was considered. I predict his firing will worsen OU's basketball program.

Hillarious stuff. There is no thinner skinned sports fan in America than a Sooner fan. Sooner-born, and Sooner-bred, and when they die, they'll have never read a critical word about OU that they could admit was true. The reason that first guy never read anything about Gallon or Mason-Griffin is because he only reads the Oklahoman. If these folks lived for a time in a major city with multiple and competitive newspapers they'd be shocked into a coma. Papers like the Boston Globe and the New York Post have stables of top-notch sports scribes who earn their cheese ripping the local sports teams and coaches apart for every decision they make or play they blow, or private activity they engage in. Good criticism brings out the best in people. Why should they improve if all they hear and read is how wonderful they are? Would Capel have done anything in his five years if Blake Griffin hadn't been a Sooner? He didn't have to recruit him at all and the efforts he make to keep any of those big dogs Kelvin had signed were a massive failure. For crying out loud, his team lost to his prior school this year! If he stays another year it's just more proof, as if needed, that OU cares very little about having a good BBall program. These OU fans live in a fantasy world where nobody can criticize their program, but will unleash the most ignorant and filthy diatribe in the next breath against their rival programs.

Seems simple to me. Capel has not brought in one player that has been a top notch player and a good student. He also is losing his best player, Cade Davis, a senior and has a bench warmer from Mississippi State and one signed juco with a 40 rating coming in next year. Texas Tech, Iowa State and Oklahoma State have good players signed for next yeat which will put OU in the cellar. FIRE Capel now and get a recruiter like Billie Gillespie if he is still available. So he had a few drinks and got caught. There are worse things in life.

Being an East Coast person, I still don't think people from this state really understand basketball.

Yes, they know simple things like the ball is supposed to go into the "hoop", and that protecting the basket is termed "defense", but you can't really go deeper than a basic understanding of the game with most people.

Because people are so simple-minded, what's hurting Capel is the fact that he lacks a "superstar" college player. When he had the Griffins, he had obvious coaching flaws, that went overlooked simply because of how dominant his team was talent wise. Now that he has, what is considered, "nobodies", those holes in his game plan have been addressed and the team acts like a cohesive unit... he just lacks the talent of his counterparts.

Someone said of him not being able to hold on to Scottie Reynolds or Damien James... uh, so? Reynolds decided to go with Jay Wright due his coaching philosophy fitting him better, Capel does not run a guard dominating offense.

Capel's best coaching job OF HIS CAREER, has been this season. In a year fresh off of controversy, everyone seems to be focused on the past instead of respecting the modest bounce-back. Watch an OU game, and you will see a team playing above their talent level on both sides of the ball. Of course, that gets no mention, because everyone around here expects points/wins/superstar recruits as the only way to measure a basketball coach's success.

Pathetic. By that stupid logic Roy Williams should have gotten fired last year. By that stupid logic, Bruce Pearl should have been coach of the year.

Take a look at anyone of the top ten coaches in the NCAA and look at the mistakes they made at their respective programs in their first five years... Capel actually stacks up pretty well. And that's an understatement.

But of course... like one person was quoted to say in this article...

"I agree with you 100 percent that a change still needs to be made. I mean, Capel has a juco guy who scores 9 points and 6 rebounds in juco right now coming in to help. He has Nic Thompson and C.J. Washington on his bench who had way better numbers than him in juco."

This is the kind of off-base, nonsensical knowledge that dominates basketball talk around here. Thompson and Washington are undersized tweeners, whereas Goff is a PF thats 50 lbs heavier, and is going to be the biggest force on the ENTIRE ROSTER next year. And btw, what was OUs biggest problem this year (and has been since Blake left) REBOUNDING and interior defense!

I get it. Obviously the Thunder have been making basketball experts out of everybody around here lately, especially the sportswriters and those on the radio. But it is easy to see that the knowledge of the overall game is about equal to the time they've been here... rather short.

Capel is a great coach, and if you get your wish and he gets fired, nobody better is going to get hired for that job opening. Why - because Capel is respected by people around the league, who know basketball, as a bright young coach... And I'll take Coach K's or Jimmy Boeheim's word or Trammel and Co, any day of the week.

Keep your limited sports knowledge to stuff you know about, college football... you're better off taking a hiatus from sports until September rolls back around.

Tramel has a beef with Capel - plain and simple. He sez no one can give a reason for Capel to stay. Yet he the "un-biased" writer thinks he should go for lack of monitoring. LOL A number of coaches said OU improved more than anyone. Hmmmm.

Come on mightier than thou Tramel come up with some better excuses. I would rather have Capel coaching than some drunkard or drug user . Hopefully he stays at OU longer than you do at this rinky dink "bad news"paper.
