Josh heupel is the son of a coach. He was a savvy quarterback that made plays and won games despite his lack of physical attributes. During his runner- up heisman/ national championship season, one analyst called him the best quarterback from the neck up, and noone could argue. He has the pedigree and the football iq to excel as a coordinator. And, i believe, one day he`ll be a head coach. While being respected by his peers and pupils, and being good at what he does, there aren`t many more deserving of opportunities than him. I wish him the best.

You people who think play-calling is so easy. The play that is called is the play that is called. If everyone makes their blocks, the play should succeed. The reason they don't sometimes is not because it was a bad play but because someone missed their assignement or was beaten on the play by the opponent. Simple. But fans never look at it that way. If it doesn't succeed, then they shout "you should've run this play" when you don't understand what the other 10 players were supposed to do and did they do it, or if the opponent just was better athletically on that play.
I have always thought that OU has had the best OC. I think with Heupel being immersed in football coaching all his life and growing up in the OU system, he will do just fine, too.

I don't understand the criticism of Chuck Long. In four years as OC, OU had: three 12-win seasons, 2 Big 12 Titles, a Rose Bowl Championship, 2 National Championship game appearances, and a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback. May Josh Heupel's first four years be as bad.

Kevin Wilson was a very good offensive coordinator who like most OC's had some bad games. I'll admit that during the A&M game he about drove me half nuts, but I've seen other games where he looked like an offensive genius.

I agree thoroughly with D.B. Play calling is crucial when the game plan has to be adjusted for whatever reason. Why continue to try and play smash mouth up the middle runs when the opposing line is stuffing you unexpectedly and consistently? The Texas A&M game was illustrative of wishful thinking and not being aware of the reality.

I think Josh is a great choice.

Play calling is not overrated. It's the situational selection of the game plan. It burned the Sooners on the goal line in College Station. OU threw a ton of passes between that night and yet Wilson ELECTED to continue to run the ball on the goal line despite the fact OU wasn't pushing A&M off the line. Play calling is the difference between OU running the ball on 2nd down late against OSU or fooling the Pokes with a play action pass to Hanna. Play calling is the difference between OU getting stuffed again on a critical 4th and 2 against Nebraska or converting with a bootleg that faked everyone in the building out.

Play calling will demand that Heupel go to the press box, we will miss him on the sidelines talking to the QB .

But I also think this is a good move, Heupel will be good at this, if not immediately, then in time.
