I agree completely. I like Stoops, but he has lost his edge. He needs be more responsible for game desicions and lead the team. It’s great that he gives his assistants so much responsibility, but he has to manage the game better. He’s not known as “Big Game Bob” now for a reason and only he can fix it!

Based on Texas’ losses, especially at K-State, are NCAA players, (especially Div. I) making a case for pay-to-play by simply quitting? Since they risk injury before even reaching the NFL where it’s ALL about the money, are scholarships no longer enough?

Wow, a bunch of “Doom and Gloom” types here. You do realize OU is 7-2 right? Where is UT, USC, and UF? They all have worse records. I know as Sooner fans we are used to winning the conference and going to NCs and BCS bowls, but you can’t win them all. Yes there are things that need to be fixed, but it’s not like OU is 0-9. If OU wins out they will be going to the B12 CC. I like to see OU win, but if the same teams win all of the time then the sport would be pretty dang boring.

I can’t explain some of these screw-ups on the road other than brain farts! Do they make a “Bean-o” type pill Bob could take to cure that? Oh! If so, give a couple to Jones and Hanna too!

The most successful OU teams I’ve watched over the past 37 years all had something this team doesn’t. FIRE. And that results in toughness when the going gets tight. That’s what makes a team a team. Bring back the fire.

My concern after hearing all the comments on the A&M game, is that the coaching staff is giving up at the end of these close games. That is so not like Stoops. I fear he has lost his edge. He would never have made these calls early in his career, nor should he. I hope we aren’t seeing the beginning of consistent 8 and 4 years.

Stoops is the “Head Coach” and it seems he tends to bury his head in the sand. If he does not have what it takes to be a “respected” leader then move on. I don’t pretend to understand all the issues going with the football program.
Let there be NO MISTAKE there are ISSUES that need to be addressed.
The comments I hear the coaches make that they do not listen to this sporting news, or that blog, etc., maybe that is the issue to some degree. Don’t make changes based upon opinions of others; however that being said what is there to be afraid of??

I’m sitting there watching OU near the goal line yelling bootleg, roll-out, hit the tight end on all the downs after every failed 1st down run. Not even a sweep by Murray to the right behind a tight end and receiver blocking. How can Wilson and Stoops be that stupid? And making that much money? A fan in FL can predict all the goal line plays. How insane is that?
NFL? How can you be so pretentious to entertain the question?
These coaches are truly the worst component of the Sooners come game day away.

Sometimes, I wish you’d publish these blog posts as regular stories. You’re style is a lot more “pointed” and there’s so much less “cheese” than in your regular Oklahoman fodder.

Your assessments of recent coaching issues at OU is great. More, please. I’m very interested in your thoughts on Wilson, when the time comes.

Fans often have quicker reactions to things, and though they are often emotional and wrong, that doesn’t mean they are always wrong. There have been a few grumblings for several years now concerning Wilson’s seeming predictability and stubbornness at times, as well as Stoops’ slowness to address certain issues (like kicking and special teams and road play). The media is finally beginning to talk about this, and I like it.

Berry, I agree. I’m glad that Stoops is our coach because he knows how the run a good program. That said, there is a reason the Sooners do so poorly in road games and BCS Bowl games. A person should never get to the point that they think they are the finished product. Game management, clock management and in-game adjustments are things that any coaching staff can improve on. Just as they watch film on the players to see how they can improve, they should spend some time doing the same with the coaching staff this Summer. If we see the same “knuckle head” problems next year, then you know that the Sooners need to have a decided advantage in player talent to overcome average game management.
