I must agree that Uwe had to have been the top of the list. I must also stat that i may be somewhat partial to him due to the fact that i trained with Uwe my junior 2000 and senior 2001 year of high school football. I never proceeded to play ball anywhere i was to young and dumb to realize what i could of had. I had several Division 1 schools pursuing me to include Oklahoma. I kicked a 49 yarder from the right hash to help my team win. Anyways i wonder if i could still do it? I do regret not pursuing my dream but i was able to fulfill one of my dreams and that was becoming a firefighter. Boomer Sooner and thanks to Uwe for all of the fun and time he spent with me.

Disagree with Tramel on who OU’s greatest bowl kicker was. That has to go to Tim Lashar. Made 3 in the title game versus Penn State, plus one against Washington in ’84 and two versus Arkansas in ’86.

But, Keeling kicked barefooted, which is a lost art that makes me nostalgic.

Can’t believe I’m commenting on a story about kickers, but we also need to factor in if they kicked off and if so how effective they were. OU’s troubles in 2008 on kickoffs were more due to short low kicks than bad coverage. Blanton was a beast on kickoffs, its been 15+ years but I seem to remember at least half of his kickoffs going for touchbacks.

In regards to Keeling’s 53-yarder against FSU at the 1981 Orange Bowl:
I was a member of the Pride of Oklahoma that year (and a few others), and we were waiting on the sidelines to go on for halftime. My thoughts at the time were “Great, we’re settling for a FIELD GOAL!”
I’d like to use this space to apologize to Mr. Keeling for those thoughts, as a 53-yarder is a helluva kick (I didn’t realize it was 53 yards at the time). In that gamem we needed EVERY point, and that kick helped us win what Coach Switzer would call ” a tight fit.”
