Joel, actually a 5 db defense is one of the better alignments against a triple option attack, especially one that doesn't have road grading offensive linemen. You get a lot cleaner angles for taking on the pitchman and it allows the split safeties, Nelson and Jefferson to make their first step forward instead of slow playing reads as safeties have to do when in a traditional 4 db set.

Look...Venables and Co. are paid big bucks and are expected to be able to install game plans against WHOEVER they play no matter what kind of offense. I'll give them a bit of a pass against Utah St. because that QB was scrambling all over the place and making ridiculous plays but you can't play a nickel package (5 defensive backs) against an option football team that runs 85% of the time and expect much success. That strikes me as thinking that Venables is so stubborn in believing in their defense that he's not willing to change from team to team. If they run an 8 man front against Air Force I don't think the Falcons would have scored because OU clearly has much more athletic talent and size. You stack the line against a team like that and force them to pass. Horrible coaching by Venables.
