Trammy,

Same old crap from a guy who couldn't teach 7th grade grammar. Where in the blog entry (it doesn't have the substance to constitute a column or article) do you support the headline that OU led to the downfall of WSU. Any fool could grasp that WSU's downfall began with the departure of a coach and the inability of a new coach to recruit.

I guess it was too tough to connect those dots for you Trammy so you just gave credit again to OU.

How about an article about the WSU program's ability to stay clean and fight on as the coach deals with family issues. Would that require too much effort? Can't stomach writing about a clean football program?

Pathetic!

.....So will the Sooners get 2 wins on Saturday? WSU and Utah State?.....A typical Oklahoman (UofO slanted even when the Sooners are the topic) artical. It might be a good game between Utah State and Washingtong State. Washington State should play a better game than USU.

Oy, vay!

Another Barry Tramel, "OU started this....and OU started that..".
Add that to "..the worst team in a BCS conference.." to discredit any win the Pokes may get on Saturday and you have a typical Barry Tramel/OUklahoman OSU sports story.

I'm still waiting to hear how OU started the fall of the Roman Empire from the head OU shill.

The biggest single contributor to WSU's demise was the loss of Mike Price -- NOT an ou defeat.
But, Tramel wants ou to get the credit on everything he can.

What a boor you are, Tramel.

They went 10-3 the very next year, and then had a head coach's wife fall ill to cancer. It hardly seems to me as if OU sent the team into a tailspin. Perhaps Mike Price's departure, but OU had nothing to do with that. Long story short... the Pokes are playing WSU this week... an article regarding OU and the Pokes' opponent is senseless.

Barry,

While WSU has had some tough years, I am surprised how little explaining was done about WSU's 2010 team. As easily as writers explain away OUs season due to injuries, they fundamentally dismiss WSUs season as "they just suck". While the years have been lean, it's important to note that they have been expected to be tough. It's the same with any program being rebuilt, and often the 3rd rebuilding year is a turning point. WSU has suffered from inexperience, lack of size, and injuries across the board. In fact, those injuries were worse than Oklahomas (although it's fair to say losing Bradford and Gresham is worse), with WSU having to go 3-4 players deep in some positions. At one point having to have scout team QB tryouts from the student body.

So base your opinion on half of the analysis if you'd like, but take note that the Cougs bring back more playing experience than OSU, don't have nearly the same injury bug as the past two years, and are in their 3rd year of a program rebuild (that sat as many talented players as possible with red shirts (some would call it rebuilding the right way). They appear to be at least 20 lbs bigger per man this year as well.

Wulff has also filled his roster with arguably the best two recruiting classes ever for WSU, which says a ton given the lack of ranking power given to players not in TX or FL. According to several of the coaches you mention, these classes are better than those that led to those three 10 win seasons under Price/Doba (don't forget the 2 lean post 98 Rose Bowl years right before 3 ten win seasons). And all of this is at a school notorious for dong more with "less".

All of that to say, even if WSU has struggled, there is good reason for optimism. Cougs have a great sense of humor, but like OU fans (of which I am one), they appreciate when the homework is done thoroughly. And unlike many OU fans, they have a sense of realistic expectations most years and always have hope. If you do the analysis, on paper anyway, the Cougs could surprise OSU. We will see on Saturday if this is the year the the Cougs start to turn it around, but at least give some more through analysis before then. Not that Coug fans wouldn't love an "I told ya so".

These are dark times indeed for WSU. A couple flaws with the writeup though. 1) WSU didn't scramble to keep Price for the 2003 Rose Bowl. He was the one pressing for that. None of us wanted him there. 2) Doba holds a lot of responsibility for our woes, but his wife was ill with cancer from 2004 to 2006, which may have had some impact on his ability to focus on the program.

I have hopes that we are going to be better this year, but it's hard to assume anything at this pint.
