The 1962 Missouri game was the first OU game I ever attended. We sat just a few rows behind the OU bench and the players were standing ankle deep in mud. Rained all day.

I too was at that Mizzou game. Rainy, widy. and terribly cold. We won the game 17-0 with Our tight end Johnny Flynn getting thrown out of the game near half time by busting thei AA running back Johnny Roland in the chops. Traded the guys in front of us 2 rain panchos for a 5th of Jack Daniels. Took 3 hours to thaw out at the Skirvin in the City with our folks.

95 degrees? Berry, you must have one of those air conditioned suites. I decide a few days before game day whether or not to come back to Norman during September for a game. I can’t handle the 105 degree days (at 6:00 pm).

I too was one of the 62,181 (the officially listed attendance) and remember not only the rain and the very windy conditions, but how cold it was too. Miserable conditions, but a great day for an 11 year with his dad. Our two thermoses of hot chocolate were empty by half time.

Mike’s comment above is correct. I was a student at the time and went to every home game. It rained the entire game and most people stood, as I did, for the entire game. It was also Dad’s day. Gary McManus needs to do a little better job with his research. 1962 was the year that OU went 8-2, losing to Notre Dame and Texas and went to the Orange Bowl to lose to Alabama who had a young QB by the name of Joe Namath. Without looking it up to verify, the score was 17-0 and Jim Grisham fumbled about 3 times inside the Alabama 5 yard line.

Barry – you’re starting your own folk tale. There was no raining ice at the 1997 A&M game. It was plenty cold, but the only precipitation came from the tears of OU fans like me who were mourning the sorry state of the football program. I remember being embarassed by the way Dat Nguyen simply wrestled the ball away from one OU RB. And by the ill-fated “Sooner Shockwave,” a kind of vertical wave (starting at the first row and moving up the stands, instead of across the stands) that was mercifully shelved soon thereafter. And by the John Belushi “Germans” video from Animal House that played on the Jumbotron late in the game. It might have been the lowest point in modern OU football history – total humiliation in front of the home folks.

I agree with Royce. My wife and Im were on a bus with a group who were attending a national SDX convention in Tulsa. She was earing a new coat and a new pair of high heels. We got soaked and while she was worrying about her new coat I told her to forget it and watch the game.

In 1980, Coach Wilkinson was the color commentator on a young ESPN sports broadcast of the OU Stanford game. Stanford’s starter at qb was a young John Elway. It hadn’t rained in Oklahoma for 100 days, but it did that day as OU was snake bit and lost 31-14 to Stanford.

I watched with 61,826 in the wind and the rain at Owen Stadium on November 17, 1962 as the Sooners shut out previously undefeated Missouri 13-0. I verified my recollection on page 131 of the 1963 Sooner.
