Big 12 football: ISU upset of Nebraska memorable
Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads became a YouTube sensation with his locker room emotion after the Cyclones upset Nebraska 9-7 in Lincoln last October. But Rhoads said the emotion was honest.
“That passion was on every face in the locker room,” Rhoads said.
Rhoads recounted what Iowa State overcame to pull that upset. The Cyclones played without their starting quarterback (Austen Arnaud) and starting tailback (Alexander Robinson). Rhoads said the Cyclone locker room at halftime included players with IVs running their veins. “Looked like a M*A*S*H unit on this side,” he said. ISU cornerback Ter’ran Benton suffered a broken leg but three times put himself back in the game, believing it was just a charley horse. A flu virus had swept through the team that week, to the point where some of the players went to the game in Chevy Suburbans, with a mask over their face.
“ There was all that that went into that game,” Rhoads said. “That’s why that locker room was so emotional. It certainly was a notable victory for our football program.”
Rhoads said he didn’t even see the YouTube clip until December. “People asked me whether I saw it,” Rhoads said. “But I lived it. I didn’t know if I wanted to diminish what took place in that locker room.”
