OSU coach Mike Gundy gave up the offensive play-calling after last season. Texas A&M’s Mike Sherman has not. Sherman will run the A&M offense for the third straight year.
“It’s tough,” Sherman said. “Friday nights, I’m grinding through tendencies. But I have a great staff, guys I count on a lot.”
Gundy said he gave up the offensive responsibilites (and hired Dana Holgorsen) because it impacted his administrative duties as a head coach. Sherman said he was impacted the same way, “but I was hired as a coach. I didn’t feel like I was doing my job (otherwise). At some point, maybe I back away.
“But we’ve really had only one good year of offense. I want to make sure the offense is rolling.”
Sherman, who spent six seasons as the Green Bay Packer head coach, said he called his own plays his final few years in Green Bay. “I think it connects you to the players,” he said.
