A brief addition to the Jerry Sloan issue (is it an issue?): I'm not a fan of the NBA anymore, but having seen Sloan play for many years, I am a fan of his. I think he relates the game to his players just as he once played the game. I think the same is true of George Karl. Either Karl or Sloan would run thru a brick wall if that would win the game. And looking at them, I say they've run thru several walls, and George is going to run thru at least one more, he's building up steam now.

More good stuff on the Switzer Tales. It was a screwy bunch back in the 60s. No water in practice, can you believe that anyone ever subscribed to that theorem? Not just anyone, but apparently everyone did. Tackling head first, it made no sense but we still did it. The coach grabbing players by the face mask, slapping them upside the helmet, pushing them around, throwing the down, that was all part of the routine. Every player was treated the same way; we were never physically hurt, but the coaches did get our attention. I always thought if they didn't care enough to pay attention to me, I wasn't going to be playing much. Then again, in the 60s, we were playing for some tough WWII and/or Korean War vets. My football coach was, like my own father, a WWII Marine. He knew tough. They all knew about hard times and deprivation. When I wound up in Vietnam at age 18, I know part of that tough love helped me make it through, and helped me to help others. Just another reason they're still the Greatest Generation.
