I am with Cowman. In the last 11 years we are one of the 9 different teams to win a NC, played in 4 NC games, won 7 Big 12 Championships, had 2 Heisman winners and we have a fan base that constantly criticizes the team. I honestly believe we could win 3 NCs in a row and lose the 4th. And our fans would turn on the team and coach stoops. Pathetic!!!

How did this blog turn into a criticism of the current team and its style of play.
You don't see many wishbone teams with a blocking fullback and 4 passes thrown in a game nowdays. Maybe it would work, but I think the current OU teams would kick the old teams sideways. Barry Switzer has said the same thng. It's a different world out there. The linemen are much bigger and just as agile and fast. The competition is much tougher. The elite teams are not a superior to the others, in part because of the recruiting limitations placed on everyone.

There is more money available to more teams.

I know it's tougher now, what with the parity that comes with recruiting limitations as they are. We still manage to come up with good players. But I don't like the philosophy which has apparently become dominant over the past few years at OU. This is what it looks like from a long-time (60 years) perspective: dink and dunk passing game, decent defense which fails to show up somewhat regularly, astonishingly unreliable special teams, lead the world in (dumb) penalties, bonehead plays and fumbles, and can't seem to find a defensive back who knows how to hold onto an errant pass. Regarding the latter, in each and every game, I see our defensive backs get into position to intercept a pass, only to see it clank off their hands, time and time again. I know the old saw: "that's why they're on defense, because the can't catch a pass", but we're talking about a durable trend here, one we see in each and every game. Good teams create turnovers and take advantage of them, which is what we used to do, but somehow we can't quite pull the trigger. But I'd gladly put up with all of this if we could just develop a power running game which could get us more than two yards on first downs and occasionally pick up a first down on third and three.

I'd settle for a little less in the passing game if we could just reliably run the ball. It's disconcerting to see how little confidence we have in our running game. Can't we recruit a fullback who can block AND run? Make them respect the initial fake a little at least.
