My son works at a fancy restaurant where Barry comes quite a bit and always has a big time. Very generous tipper. Comes in with Jim Lindsey often. My son says he’ll talk to anybody, and they look forward to his visits.

As a Husker, born and bred, I can say that Barry Switzer is beloved in the state of Nebraska. And I would like to share a memory from the 1970s when he really had our number. I don’t remember the year, but it should be easy to look-up. The Sooners were playing in Lincoln in one of those “winner to the Orange Bowl, loser to the Fiesta Bowl” Big 8 Championship on the line games. And former NU coach and AD Bob Devaney had a late-night sports show on Friday nights. And as Devaney sat discussing the next days college games with his talking-head sports broadcaster straight man; Barry Switzer comes ambling across the stage, unexpected and uninvited, hands Devaney a bag of take out tacos and tells him its to get him ready for the food in Tempe, and then walks out the other side. Devaney started laughing so hard, he almost fell out of his chair, and then had Barry come back and sit down for a few minutes. Needless to tell Sooner fans, Oklahoma won the next day, and Nebraska headed for the Fiesta Bowl.

Good story. Switzer has some of the best every told about college football. My favorite is the one about taking a Caribbean cruise prior to the 1985 Orange Bowl. On a beach in Jamaica a young guy tries to sell him pot. Switzer says “I don’t smoke it; but I know where you can sell some.” “That guy right there kept asking me for pot all the way down here.”, and points to the prim, proper and bespectacled Joe Paterno.
