Pistol Pete's stat came as a result of being the all-time greatest ball hog.

Pistol Pete was the best of the best. If you never saw him play a full game
you are missing out as far as being a basketball fan. He had ball handling
skills that were far superior to any pro on the court today. He had shooting
skills far superior to the pro's at todays evaluations. He was ahead of his
time. Not one player in the NBA today, could hold his Jock!

Mike, if any other guard shot as many times as Maravich did, they wouldn't have shot at anywhere near a 43% rate. You know defenses were overplaying him because he was by far the only option on their team to score.

That said, I wouldn't vote it the greatest record in sports, just very impressive. Cal Ripken's consecutive games played streak of over 2,500 is tops for me.

I've always thought of Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hit streak as the greatest record.
Pistol Pete's mark is all the more impressive because it came before the 3-pointer. But I think it will fall before Joe D's does.

There's no way Pistol Pete's record belongs in this discussion. The guy spent three years dribbling up the court & jacking up a jumper on virtually every possession, because his dad was the head coach and gave him the green light to do so. He only hit 43% of his shots over those three years, and LSU was a mediocre team at the time, finishing at or just above .500 in his sophomore and junior seasons, a pedestrian 22-10 in his senior year, and never making an NCAA tournament. There's a long list of great college guards who could have posted similar scoring numbers under those circumstances.

OU's 47 straight wins, UCLA's seven straight national titles, and Boston's eight straight NBA titles are vastly more impressive than Pistol Pete's hollow, overrated scoring statistics in the mind of anybody who really understands what sports and competition are all about.
