Giants: Not the best destination for Bomar
Star-crossed quarterback Rhett Bomar went to the New York Giants in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. I don’t think that’s a good situation for Bomar.
I am sort of pulling for Bomar, though I don’t suppose I have a good reason why. There’s an old story that when the St. Louis Cardinals traded Keith Hernandez to the Mets, in what seemed to be a purely punitive trade to a moribund franchise, Cardinal manager Whitey Herzog said, “Hernandez traded himself.”
Well, the same is true of Bomar. Whatever his fate, he did it to himself. Bomar was unpopular as the OU quarterback, then when he stuck his hand in the Big Red Sports & Imports cookie jar, he had no constituency. He traded himself to Sam Houson State.
But I still pull for Bomar. I don’t think he got much home training, and I think he got caught up in a fast world. Without a solid base, you can drown pretty quickly, and Bomar did.
Anyway, for Bomar, I’m hard-pressed to find a team a worse fit than the Giants. 1. The Giants only kept two quarterbacks on the main roster in 2008 (Eli Manning and David Carr). 2. The Giants have three QBs signed up, including Andre Woodson, a sixth-round pick out of Kentucky in the 2008 draft. 3. The Giants will no patience with knuckleheads. They don’t much anyway, but after the Plaxico Burress scandal, the Giants re-learned their lesson.
Truth is, Bomar would have been better off being a free agent and finding a team that wanted to take a flyer on a quarterback.
Bomar’s past no doubt hurt him in the draft. The Dallas Cowboys drafted Texas A&M’s Stephen McGee in the fourth round. McGee is a tough guy and a good leader who just got caught at A&M in the wrong era. But anyone who thinks he can play NFL quarterback jumped into a time machine. McGee is a good fit for George Clooney’s leatherheads, but this is the 21st century. McGee throws about like Zac Robinson and runs about like Sam Bradford, neither of which is bad but neither of which is NFL-caliber.
The Cowboys must have figured they had so many late picks, might as well take an Aggie and build up some goodwill.
There was no goodwill for Bomar. He was banished from OU long ago, and it seems like his banishment will continue.

You are correct Berry if he plays QB,he will not play QB there but what if he is switched to DB,he might.
He is a good enough athlete to do that and do that well.
Remember Bobby Boyd,he played QB at OU and was a 5th rd choice of Baltimore Colts then they switched him to CB,he became a 9 yr starter and 7 time Pro bowler.
Don’t believe the Giants have any notion of trying him at QB very long, just a good enough athlete to take a chance on him to make it somewhere else in lineup.
Andre Woodson is no factor whatsoever. The Giants have all but written him off anyway. Hence the Bomar pick.
Barry, can this PLEASE be the last Rhett Bomar article we have to endure? Unless Rhett follows through on his promise to “tell the whole story” I’d like to think the Rhett Bomar chapter of Oklahoma football is now closed and nothing more can be written.
Banishment? Are you kidding me? How many kids dream of getting drafted period? If he is NFL caliber he will make it regardless of what round he got drafted in. He is getting a shot that most kids only have dreams about and you act like he has been banded from ever playing.
Bomar created a pretty good sized headache for OU. A decent kid will make a mistake and be somewhat remorseful about it. Bomar got caught and his arrogance was disturbing. Not only his, but his parents’. Bomar’s actions didn’t just affect him. They affected his entire team, and to some extent, OU’s athletic program.
Nah. We just want to see justice done. A punk like this doesn’t deserve a shot at the NFL. We’ve already seen too many instances of what happens when punks get there and start making money. The closest Bomar should be allowed to get to an NFL field is MAYBE holding the clipboard. But I would still HIGHLY recommend checking that clipboard.
Judging by his and his parents’ responses to his actions while at OU, it’s obvious this kid hasn’t earned anything a day in his life. Send him back to Fowler Toyota or Big Red Sports & Imports to earn that paycheck he got, THEN we’ll talk.
Bomar was unpopular as OU’s QB? That’s not how I remember it.
I thought everyone was enamored with the strong arm and linebacker mentality?
You may think I am crazy, but I feel that if McGee would have gone to UT instead of A&M we might be talking about him in the same way we do Bradford and McCoy.
Texas A&M, where good quarterbacks go to become mediocre…McGee never progressed, see McNeil, Reggie (A higher recruit than VY)
Bomar…. I dont ever recall being called “unpopular” especially not by the media. Most unpopular kids dont drink beer on nation al tv or have hundreds of OU fans in the stands at their high school game Friday before the OU/TX game on saturday. and it is safe to say most high school coaches would have the sense to request the band not to play Boomer Sooner when the QB does something outstanding…but not Coach Bomar
Good to see things don’t change amongst the staff apologists at the daily OK. Still saying nobody could’ve ever possibly known that Bomar and his pals were cheating. Who would’ve ever guessed?
Yes, the kid should have known better than taking the money. This being the real world, though, knowing better isn’t always the compass that kids are following.
If we were all offered money for not doing anything, a great number of people would accept it. And a great number of those people would accept it without even asking questions.
If my boss at work told me he was giving me a bonus, and if anyone asked….”just say it was for a side project you worked on for us a while back…” I would more than likely deposit that check and think how nice it is that my boss appreciates me. Should I be villanized for the rest of my career for that?
In the grand scheme of things, Bomar didn’t do anything more than countless big name guys have done at many schools. Most of them don’t get caught (you’re extremely naive if you deny it). Heck, Troy Smith took money from Boosters at Ohio State, was suspended a few games and later went on to win the Heisman Trophy. Bomar got a big head and made a mistake. He was wrong. If you saw the Outside The Lines Special on him a couple years ago, you would know that he is very remorseful and knows he made the biggest mistake of his life. What made his case different was Bob Stoops. Pete Carroll or Jim Tressell would have suspended him and swept it under the rug. Stoops obviously was a little more harsh. The people who get on here and act like Bomar owes them something (3 years later) or ruined their life need to get a life and get over themselves. Righteous Indignation is a stinky perfume…
Come on Sooner fans. Give the man a break. He’s paid his debt and we’ve moved on. But for this happening, we would not have watched Sam get the Heisman. Things happen for a reason. I’ve moved on and wish Rhett the best.
Berry,
Instead of lambasting Bomar OU fans should be praising him. He could have taken a bunch of the other local heroes down with him but did not. OU fans best course of action might be to shut up and let a sleeping dog lie. You never know, you might get what you asked for. OU fans are beyond arrogant, they blissfully ignorant.

Look on the bright side, maybe he can get paid and won’t have to actually work.
