Caroline Kennedy: Good news for OU
Caroline Kennedy has withdrawn her name from U.S. Senate consideration, which means she wasn’t going to get picked, and that could be good news for OU football.
OK, it’s a stretch. But follow along. This theory makes a certain amount of sense.
Kennedy has been mentioned for two positions: Hillary Clinton’s New York Senate seat and diplomat to the Court of St. James, which is ambassador to the United Kingdom.
Kennedy seems a quality choice for St. James Palace, which is a far less controversial appointment than the Senate.
But if JFK’s daughter had been sent to Capitol Hill, who might have been the next-most likely choice for London?
How about David Boren? The OU president was a Rhodes Scholar, remember, and there are worse assignments than ambassador to Merry Old England.
I don’t know of any reason why Boren would be tired of the self-proclaimed dream job he’s now held almost 15 years. But OU has undergone a remarkable transformation in Boren’s time; it’s a job well done, and if he’s looking for one last adventure in his political career, Great Britain could provide it.
Remember last spring, when Boren broke from his norm and endorsed Barack Obama in the Democrat race. Boren has mostly steered clear of politics since returning from Washington, so why would he endorse a candidate who was not popular among Oklahoma Democrats and had no chance of carrying the state in the general election?
Perhaps because his endorsement could carry some weight nationally — Boren remains a well-respected Democrat across America – and maybe it never hurts to be owed a favor by the soon-to-be leader of the free world.
Obama could appoint Boren to the Court of St. James and end an astounding run at OU. The Sooners have had the same president, athletic director and football coach since December 1998.
That kind of stability is rare in collegiate athletics. That kind of stability keeps Bob Stoops content, knowing the people he will be working with.
It’s good for OU that someone like Caroline Kennedy remains in the running for the Court of St. James.

It is a shame that an OU President endorsed Barack Obama. I am embarrassed that the two have anything to do with state of Oklahoma and with it’s many morals and principals it holds and it stands for. Folks, it’s time to come together and pray for our nation like no other time.
While I was born in OKC, everytime I go back to visit family and friends, I am very saddened to see the ever present discrimation. I, for one, voted for Obama based on his qualifications, not the color of his skin. Apparently Mr. Boren felt the same way. Oh, and I am as white as they get. May God Bless Obama and his family and may they prosper.

Let me rephrase my comments. I am happy with the good Mr. Boren has done for the University. My point is that it is embarrassing for me and I believe most Oklhoman’s that he endorsed President Barack Obama. I still believe it is very important to pray for our Nation and our leaders, especially now.
Cindy, I am not in the least bit talking about a man’s color. I am talking about the issues facing America and the policies our new president is pushing for. I read somewhere that 28% of “Christians” voted for Obama. Which pages in my Bible don’t mean anything, please let me know so I can rip them out.
Mr. Strickland,I am the least bit embarrassed that Mr. Boren endorse Obama. I actually voted for McCain, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Please do not say that most Oklahoman’s are because I think that is very untrue. The majority of the people I know that live in OK voted for Obama.
Travis Strickland: I am an Oklahoman and am PROUD that Boren endorsed PRESIDENT Obama. I don’t know where you do your reading, I’m sure in a Republican RAG, but I am white, I am Christian and I VOTED FOR OBAMA! You and your “christian type” people are why I am embarrassed for Oklahoma. You “claim” to be a Christian, yet you have no problem passing judgement on others. Is that what Jesus would do?? I think not!
While I don’t agree with David Boren’s endorsement of President Obama, he’s done a good job at OU. I also agree that the stability of having the same personnel around for several years carries a lot of weight whether at OU or at any job. I think that he’s happy where he is and probably won’t consider another move at this time.
Kelly,
Oklahoma was the only state in the US that had every county go for John McCain. Before you go spouting off about what every Oklahoman thinks and voted for, check the facts. This country has a huge conservative following and thank goodness Oklahoma leads the way. President Obama did not travel to Oklahoma and there is a reason he didn’t. The majority of Oklahoman’s think the country is headed in the wrong direction. Thank God I live in Oklahoma.
Let’s see.
Obama supports gay unions and equality for gays and he supports abortion, just two of many. That is not Christ like, as a Christian, I am not going to sit and be quiet. I’m going to stand here and tell you what God’s word says. It’s all in the Bible if you care to study.
Travis Strickland,
You are clearly a bible inerrancy believer who selectively picks and chooses which verses you emphasize. That is ok as long as you don’t pass judgment on others. When you do, it becomes important to point out what an idiot you are. If, someday, you choose to read the bible carefully instead of letting fundamentalist dogma drive your understanding, you will realize what the bible is and is not. You will understand how the books developed and why some contradict others. You will learn which verses were added as late as the middle ages. Hopefully, after all of this, you will realize how inappropriate it is to make the specific judgments that you are making. In the mean time, perhaps you should pay more attention to Jesus’ words and less to the old testament.
Show me Joe in the new testament where the two things I stated above contradict what I said in my above statements. I can see where you stand already and it does not reflect with Christian values. Seems it leans more toward liberal theology.
Travis,
you said “Let’s see.
Obama supports gay unions and equality for gays and he supports abortion, just two of many. That is not Christ like”
Where in the gospels does Jesus specifically say that he doesn’t support gay unions or is against abortion? I think if you actually read it Jesus never actually had anything to say about GLBTQ issues. And if you turn to other passages that might seem to speak on these issues I challenge you to do some Biblical scholarship and read various interpretations and look at the particular context in which it was written ie social economic political locations of those the stories were written for
For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death.
Exodus 35:2
I can’t believe that 75 percent of all Americans have
faith in President Obama and the rest live in Okla.and the rest of the south.I’m from Okla.but live in Tn.I have never
seen so many REDNECKS in my life.I’ve been a Christian all
my life and I’ve never seen so much hatred for someone that
people like travis have for someone.I am white by the way
There are Christians, and there are people who call themselves christians. According to the Bible (the entire Bible, not just certain passages), if you are a true christian, there is no way you could vote for Obama, because of what he beleives. That’s not judging, that believing what the Bible says is true.
It is amusing that most Okies seem to believe the world revolves aroung Oklahoma (politicians, athletics, especially OU, etc.). Although I was raised here, I had the opportunity to attend college elsewhere and live in various places including Europe briefly. Wound up spending 30+ years in Dallas. I am disappointed in the corruption and misspending of tax monies here. Wake up and realize that we are only a small parrt of the world!! – Bill (OKC)

I really have my doubts that Boren carries much sway with anyone outside the academia circles on a national basis.
