Unsung heroes of Florida’s victory

Amid all the Tim Tebow/Sam Bradford talk, the unsung heroes of Florida’s victory over Oklahoma was the Gator secondary. Think how rare a Sooner receiver ran free.

Bradford completed his share of passes — 26 of 41 for 256 yards — but the Sooner receivers had to work for their catches. Little dump passes out in the flat were open most of the night, but nothing else.

Throw it deep? Well covered; Bradford landed a couple of balls with perfect accuracy that were knocked away.

Throw it short? Florida defenders converged like peace officers responding to a 9-1-1.

I thought Florida’s pass rush would be the key, and it was important. The Gators sacked Bradford twice and flushed him some other times. But Florida’s pass coverage was outstanding.

“Our defense always feels like we have to make a stand,” said sophomore DB Joe Haden. “They have a great offense. We like challenges. We like playing against good offenses. We like to show how good of a defense we are. Playing against them was proving how good we are.”

Case closed. Florida’s defense indeed proved that the title of SEC defense packs a wallop. The SEC defense stared down the Big 12 offense. And the prime reason was pass coverage.

The SEC proved that they have the better athletes on the defensive side of the ball. Nic Harris should never have run his mouth off and his attempt to hurt Harvin during the 4th quarter was shallow and pathetic. The better team one, proving once again that the SEC is the best conference

Both of these teams would lose to USC. Will OU drop below Utah in the final poll? They should!! Stoops and his coaches made some bad calls, field goal of 49 yds!??? Gresham should have been the target in the red zone all the time. Florida was on their heels when OU quick called their plays, stopping,(too often) to see what the coach wanted to change was a mistake
WELL AT LEAST BERRY HAD A NICE ALL EXPENSE PAID VACATION, COURTESY OF THE SUBSCRIBERS TO THE OKLAHOMAN.

It is hard to believe Berry that you are a Florida homer. Did you some how get to drinking the swamp water as well. The first pass breakup as you call it was blatant personal foul by leading with the helmet. Not to mention taunting on the sideline by the Florida bench. The last pass breakup was a pass interference (if you don’t believe me, watch the replay). Even the interception to end the first half could have been called for interference, however, it wasn’t. I know that you picked Florida to win, but at least be honest, the reason OU lost was because they did not push the two possessions in the red zone into the end zone, not that Florida was just soooooooooooo great.

“Big Game” Bob is now being called “Big Lame” Bob. How stupid was it to pass up two easy opportunities for field goals and then be stopped close to the goal line by the outstanding Florida defense? On December 31, 2008, Boren presented Stoops with his $3 million bonus. Stoops’ total take last year was $6 million. Is he worth it? Stoops didn’t even cover the gamblers’ spread in Miami. The betting crowd is unhappy.

florida would lose to usc? c’mon… the only legit thing you can say about a fl v. usc game would be that it would be a great game. sure, you could say that fl has better team speed, a better QB, a faster defense… all of these things are true. but to just call it a win on paper? nah…

now, next year… :) fl will start off ranked #1, especially if tebow and spikes return. can u imagine? yikes!

go gators!

I hope it is now obvious why OU has the statistics they have on offence. They don’t face the kind of defense every week such as they did with Florida, and would with every other SEC team. Just ask Ohio St.

My view of the real issue with the game is that Coach Stoops and Coach Wilson tried to over analyze the game. We did not play our “offense”, rather we played to their “defense”. My numbers may be wrong, but during the season we checked the play at the line of scrimmage less than 25% of the time, yet in this game we checked the play over 75% of the time. It appeared last night that we sometimes changed the play up to three times. How could we keep a tempo? Why did we not play the game that got us to the dance? The other issue I have is the play calling strategy. We knew they would bring the blitz, so why did we not roll Sam out of the pocket 30% of the time? Plus, what is wrong with consistently making 5 to 7 yard passes if we score? The red zone strategy was horrendous. We run a spread offense, so why on the one yard line would we bring all our players together to power the ball in? Plus, we have the most accurate QB in college and the best tight end in college, who is 6’6”, why would we not run pass plays in the red zone? This is a game where small advantages make a different in the player’s attitudes; you always take the three points. I think our defense did great to hold Tebow and Company to 24 points. Coach Stoops needs to take full responsibility for a extremely poor offensive game strategy.

The OU coaches joked again, not the players, not Bradford.
When faced with the 4th down, they made a high school call and called the same play that was previously stopped, a safe running play that was a loss. Terrible!
Call a play action, tight end and 2 more receivers in the end zone, like Tebow’s jump pass, or kick a field goal if you don’t want risk. They screwed up any chance of scoring.
Game lost.
The interception before halftime was bad luck. 2 times in the red zone with no scores means no win.

Stoops and offensive coordinator choke again, not the players. SEC is high octane and higher risk offenses and it shows. USC and Utah both better than the Sooners.

if you actually watched the replay harris did not, in fact try to hurt harvin. It did look that way from first glance though.

misprint, choked again, but you get it.

The big 12 teams have one week to prepare for OU. Florida had over a month. How would FL do if they played week after week in the big 12. The readers are correct, poor offensive play calling.

There are so many wrongs to correct on OU’s side it is mind-boggling. Coaching, production, decisions (by players and coaches), you name it.

Florida was the BEST team, by far (yes, better than you UT) that we’ve seen this year. So what? You dance with the gal that brung ya. Stay in the hurry up. Quit standing at the LOS changing the GD play. What is up with that, Wilson? We finally get the other two aspects of the game to play an average game and Wilson’s unit disappears…just like in Dallas. Interesting.

I never go to OK our read this paper, but too often I have seen OU fans on the Austin American Statesman website talking trash about the Horns and I have always wondered why they waist their time…now I know…it is fun. So let me return the favor: HA HA Sooner Nation…you choked and you showed that you were a fraud this year. Horns should have been the Big 12 Rep. Enjoy your summer of discontent. Ha ha!!!

Stoops should give his $3 million bonus back and go to the NFL. Coaches called a horrendous game. Let Sam call some of his own plays. OU needs to stick with the powder puff Big 12. We can’t play with the big boys. Two times in the red zone and no points. Yuck! I agree…’Big Game’ Bob really is “Big Lame’ Bob.

I guess stoops wants to keep the conference championship game. He has won it so many times. He doesn’t care about the National Championship! He wants the Big XII!

Hey BooB! Thanks for NOTHING! Please…go to DENVER!!!!

Berry,

Has OU ever really had to come from behind much in the recent past. If you get up on them they tend to go out with a whimper. Much diffferent than teams like Texas who seem to enjoy coming from behind. I believe that it illustrates a soft character and a lack of on field leadership. The only game where we put up a fight to come from behind was the 2007 Fiests Bowl only to lose in OT. Get up on us and we wilt, cannot take the pressure. Have to address that. Good teams never quit, a question of on the field leadership.

Hey Bobby,

Did you vote tu above the Big Game losers?

I never thought there was a way for the BCS to screw us this year. Then again, we would have lost to Ohio State anyway!

OU now has the distinction that Ohio State had/has… unable to win the big game – perrennial imposters!

Texas would have given Gators a better game. The OU red zone offense was horrendous.

O for 5 in BCS… Lost 3 of 4 to Texas. I know most root for their conference, but not us.

Has the “Big Game Bob” mystique finally worn off or does it mean he chokes in Big Games?

Hey boys, the Sooners got beat with the Florida option plays. Is that ironic or what? In the 70′s and 80′s, OU ran the best triple option in the country (with the best players that money could buy – but that’s another story)…

Blame for the loss is on both sides of the ball; as for Florida, the credit for the win is on both sides of the ball, too.

Last comment: OU finally ran into a team that they couldn’t run the score up on in the 4th quarter. Bout time

LeisureSuit Barry…I think what you’re really saying is that the Choklasooners are the king of the Big 12 imposters. Of course they’re tied with OK-Lite for the state title of posers. I am just sick of the poor play calling and even worse defense. I think the Gators secondary only looked great because ours was horrible! Bud Grant and Bob Stoops are becoming the same person. Oh well, at least bob lost with class….HA!

Yes, Florida deserves credit for winning the game and being national champ. But let’s not take it too far. This game was tied 14 -14 in the 4th and OU was basically two goal line plays away in the first half from making the 2nd half an entirely different game. To start spoutin about the huge diffence in the teams or conferences is a bit premature(i.e. – Alabama). I am a Sooner alum who lived in southern california for many years. I truly beleive SC would have beat either OU or Florida. Let’s stop making these ridiculous comments and let the game stand on it’s own. I am sure Utah doen’t feel that concerned about the SEC.

Step back from the trees and look at the forest for a minute. Collectively, it seems we all recognize most of the symptoms, but no one has yet diagnosed the problem.

- “Big Game Bob” becomes “Big Lame Bob”
- Team defense that can stop anyone becomes a team that must outscore everyone to win
- Tackles become missed tackles
- A tough team w/ grit becomes a team with a glass jaw
- A team with a business-like swagger becomes a team completely devoid of self-confidence
- Sooner magic becomes the Sooner curse

Those are the symptoms; the disease is the loss of Mike Stoops.

There are countless ways to prove this, but I don’t think I need to. Y’all know deep down that it’s true. When Mike Stoops left, the magic left with him.

Trammel, I don’t know what game you were watching last night but all I saw was at least 5 times the Florida DB’s committing PASS INTERFERENCE, and they were not called for it 1 time. The “goal line” stand in the 2nd quarter was a joke. Chris Brown SCORED on the second play but the PAC-10, ooops, ACC officiating crew marked him down at the one and the next 2 plays, Florida was offsides and no call was made. And that does not count how many times I saw Gerald McCoy or Taylor held when they were about to blow up Teabow. I saw at least 3 times OU ball carriers or rteceivers hit out of bounds late. The media, re: ESPN, ABC, FOX Sports and CBS did not want OU in this game to start with, so everybody MADE SURE OU DID NOT WIN THE GAME PERIOD! They wanted the Shorthorns or USC with Florida in this game. Now until some of your kind start publisizing this abuse, NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE! Now call me a sore loser if you want, but OU has not got a FAIR bowl game OFFICIATING since we beat FSU in 2000!

The ou coaching in this game was horrendous. Not using the up tempo that got u to this game was retarded. OUs coaching must be the most hardheaded bunch of morons that I have ever seen. When you made youre offense slow down you lost the game, everyone with an honest pair of eyeballs could see it. Why couldnt the coaches see it? Its not rocket science I mean come on can these guys add two plus two or is it too much to ask for coaching with a tiny bit of common sense. Heads should roll for the coaching in this game, and a basic IQ test should be taken by bob and kevin wilson. Im done watching these f*cking idiots in bowl games. Its this simple when you get outside of youre game plan you lose. Oh yeah running the same play on 4th and goal instead of using youre nfl tight end is beyond explanation.

thanks alot for slowing the tempo down coaches that was a great game plan

Well, I predicted it at the end of last year. We’d win the big 12 and get smoked in our bowl game. I was close but at least it was a better game than the last 4 BCS fiascos. I’m a huge OU fan but am getting sick and tired of them getting embarrassed every year. Like I said last year, Stoops does a lot of talk about winning “championships.” I guess he’s referring to the Big 12 Championship. I say, big fricken deal. Win the National Championship! Florida’s coach has done it twice in the last 3 years! Ours was 9 years ago and things seem to be the same as they always are. To me, Stoops needs to be held accountable. I do like him and without a doubt, he has excellent character and is a very good coach. But, why reward repeated failure? Why keep giving him millions and millions for winning the Big 12 Championship? What is the point of winning championships if you can’t win the National Championship? Anything else really doesn’t matter. I mean, come on, who really cares who wins their conference championship?

That was perhaps the most pathetic coaching job ever to be shown on TV. I have never seen so many checked plays. Why not issue the Gators easy chairs while we decided what we wanted to do. No tempo!!! The two times they played with a tempo they moved the ball. Stoops has worn out his welcome.

There is a threshold that you must play above when playing huge games like this. OU got away with some things during the regular season becasue of the competition…not that it was bad, but because it was not as high. But last night OU could not step over that threshold and make those huge plays. I was a little disappointed in Duke Robinson and Iglasius..Robinson for getting a penalty on a big pass play and Iglasius for dropping a huge pass on the sideline. They couldn’t play over the treshold and Florida finally stepped over in the fourth quarter and OU could not follow. Disappointing.

It is so interesting to see all of the coaches on this blog today. Everyone can do such a better job than those that have suceeded at OU to this point. Those that spout all of the statistics and armchair analysis on here probably have never broken a huddle in their lives. I can’t think anything better than for OU to run off Stoops and his coaching staff. After you have run Stoops off maybe you can hire John Blake. I bet he wants the job again.

You people are nuts wanting to run Stoops off.

Who you gonna get to replace a Coach that will get you into the National Championship game EVERY YEAR?

I am Sooner born and Sooner bred and I do not want to return to to the Steve Owens/John Blake days.

What a bunch of classless idiots.

Another important fact about “Big Lame Bob” is this. John Blake had recruited half the starters for the 2000 team, which won the national championship. Stoops has never won a national championship relying only on talent which he had recruited.

I wish all the “experts” would stop dogpiling on the Sooners, and that the Tebow disciples would stop already with the “Tim’s Will to Win” crap.

Sooner OC Kevin Wilson’s play-calling went inexplicably conservative in two red-zone opportunities and Bradford forced a pass into coverage, although he hit his receivers in the hands on both of his techinical interceptions.

Aside from the Sooner coaches ignoring Jermaine Gresham when needed to sustain drives (a man the Gators could not stop), the biggest story of the night was Florida’s “lock-down” secondary.

Olympic quality sprinters who hit like trucks, and blanketed the OU receivers much of the night, were the heroes here. Tim Tebow had nothing to do with their coverage, nor their takeaways that went down as interceptions.

Bradford still threads the needle on passes Tebow could only dream of throwing, and OU’s defense made the Gators earn every yard. They were the toughest defense Florida saw this season. They just wore out due to the lack of sustained drives by the OU offense. If they weren’t going three and out, they were scoring on only 3 plays.

Sure, Tim was wild and inspirational, waving his arms about all night, especially when on camera.

And yes, Bradford seemed shocked that his team was not 40 points ahead much of the game, but the Sooner players answered every challenge and lived up to their status as a national power.

It’s just that when you ram the ball down an opponent’s throat for 99 yards, then try to go laterally three times straight on the fastest defense in the galaxy, touchdowns will not happen.

Even Switzer mentioned that at half-time.

Still, Kevin Wilson is a far cry from Chuck Long, however great a guy he was. Hope Wilson comes back next year.

OU, and the Big Twelve in general, must make a commitment to playing better defense…from recruiting, to workout regimes, to attitude…across the board. Texas seems to be the only B12 team to play good “D” in big games. With all of Mack Browns faults, at least he has put emphasis on defense. OU played pretty good “D” last night but Florida played better. The “other team” playing better-wanting it more-having more heart…getting tired of hearing that? I am.

I’ve been reading some of y’all’s “analysis,” and I must say, you had to have been at the game to have seen how much Gresham was open to want to throw to him every dang play.

I wish he’d been more of a target myself, but none of us have given credit to the Florida secondary coverage.

How often was Jermaine even open? And how often did Sam have to get rid of the ball before being sacked? He did a good job of avoiding that.

Little breakdowns hurt, like Matt Clapp’s missed block on that 4th & goal failure.

Stoops should have kicked? Oh please. We all wanted 7.

Yes, I wanted to see up-the-middle power on the goal line, but each of us would have screamed, “What are you doin’!?” if Florida had jammed the middle.

As a Sooner fan, we really are un-pleasable.

All Bob can do is keep putting the team in that stadium on championship game day, and plug his ears when we cry like 7th grade girls.

Don’t listen to us, Bob!

We’ll all love you to death at the next national title!

You know, I have yet to read or hear a Demarco Murray “what if.”

The Gator line looked like a dream come true for a healthy Murray.

What if?

I know, pointless to speculate, but when we size up a loss, “what if’s” abound anyway.

OU’s offensive line opened great holes for Brown, who hit them fast and ripped off yards like a knife through butter.

Can you imagine Demarco Murray hitting those holes and drawing secondary coverage up to the line?

The passing game really opens up then.

Sam is still young, and looked infinitely more mortal last night, but what he said at the Heisman ceremony seemed even more true.

The big numbers this year for our Heisman boy are a direct result of his hitting receivers with great passes AFTER all the facets of the Sooner offense were planted in the minds of the opponent’s defense.

There was nothing to really keep Florida’s DB’s honest. They were free to shut off all Sam’s usual targets, some of which he managed to hit anyway.

I just pray that Demarco Murray isn’t drawn into the draft before getting a chance to play in our next bowl.

The 2009 bowl will not likely be a title game however, not with OU graduating 20 guys.

But what a treat the nation missed with him on the sideline.

What a difference if the Gator D had to sweat his presence.

What if – What if – What if.

You all have it all wrong. OU had the perfect game plan and executed it perfectly except the referees made all the wrong calls.

On EVERY Single play, the ref’s did not call holding on FLA, or all of FL pass interference on each pass play. Did not call FLA offsides or illegal procedures on each play.

This was the worst game officiating of all time. The ref’s got it wrong on every single play! Their non calls such as when Tebow kicked Stoops in the groin were atrocious!

Tebow kicked Stoops? When did that happen?

I did see the Gators slap the ball away when the Sooners were in rhythm, lining up to move the chains again.

They all pointed and complained to the refs, who just put the ball back and said, “Play ball!”

Isn’t that at least delay of game?

Dear Barry
I just wanted to remind people that OU / Stoops routinely gets a recruiting class ranked 10th or lower nationally, while Florida, USC, Texas, Notre Dame, Miami ALL have great top 10 recruiting classes. Yet, OU figures out a way to coach-up these less recruited kids and produces teams that routinely end up in the top 5 and top 10 almost every year. I think STOOPS should get some credit for doing more with less. What do you think?

Thanks OU. You were unstoppable in October when UT beat you then you ran up the scores so you could push the BCS button. Now the Big 12 looks like a bush league.

Choke! Gasp! OU recruits low? How many schools wanted Peterson? Quite a few. According to what I hear each year OU recruits top 5 at least. The championship team of 2000 was the aberration, with hosts of unknowns who came together as a team and kicked some tail. The problem with OU since 2000 has been primadona attitudes amongst its stars (Malcolm Kelley) rather than low-quality materials squeezed to their limits. The Sooners land some of the nation’s finest athletes every year.

Headline:
Oops, Stoops–
Sooner Droops, Poops

So the Sooners lose a BCS game..AGAIN! The Sooners let down the Big 12..AGAIN! Is anyone surprised? Enjoy your offseason lOUsers. :-) HAHAHAHA!!!

I’ve had enough of watching OU in these big games. Sooners look all world during the regular season and flop in postseason. This year I wasn’t fooled and bet on Florida. It was easy money.

You guys are idiots. you want to run stoops off even though he has taken ou to how many national championship games. reality check he cant win them all. O and to blame the refs is just stupid. so they miss calls guess what calls are missed both ways. florida just shut down an extremely good offense get over it. OU will mostly be back in the hunt next year for national championship. how about you shut up and just say good season and you will hope for a better outcome next year, instead of whinning like typical ou fans when they lose.

As far as I am concerned, the defense did a great job keeping OU in the game, the offense, on the other hand, lost the game. Or I should say the offensive coordinator lost the game. If you don’t sustain drives and put points on the board and keep their offense off of the field, you lose. I saw the same Wilson offense that lost in Lubbock in 2007 because he couldn’t change his “game plan” and do what worked. Bob, please stay, you are a great coach and great recruiter but you have got to get rid of Wilson. Anybody can coach the spread, we need a OffCo that can realize what he is up against instead of doing the same things over and over, hoping for different results. When it doesn’t work the previous 3 downs, don’t try it again the next 3 downs, it probably isn’t going to work. I saw several holding and pass interference and late hit calls that were not made on Florida. We needed Demarco in this game bad.

What a bunch of dirty players from hog country…..
Harris pulling on Harvin legs, trying to re-injure him, late hits, etc.
Your team plays as dirty as the FSU players and are a bunch of losers too!!
The only thing in OK is hog farms and corn fields.
“Big” 12 is a joke as is the “Big” 10!!!!!!!
Don’t you all say “Sooner” to call pigs?????

Berry, What game did you watch? three plays seperated ou and florida. No great difference. two at the 1 yard and at fu 28. got to be kidding me. Both teams played well. Defenses did great. OU d was on the field too long in the end and could not keep up. Sooners played well enough to win, but fu played better for three plays. Game. Bite the dust again? Not this time, showed up and played….just got beat.

For the rest of you idots….you were not in the big game…just claim you tickets at the door. No play dont get the voice to whine or other…see ya at the top again next year!

Nobody wants to “run Stoops off.” We all simply recognize the magic that is missing without his brother Mike. I’m just suggesting y’all think for a moment where we might be if the two-brother tandem arrived and Mike had been named head coach out of the gate.

This game was disappointing – as a lot of them have been. I’m not making noise about this particular game, it’s the trend that troubles me.

HogCountry,
You are a blooming idiot. Oklahoma is not corn country. Do we have hog farms? Yes. That produces a lot of pig plop, some of which goes by name of HogCountry. I am not particularly an OU fan,(being from OSU) but I pulled for them to represent the state and the conference well. They gave their effort and they lost. At least they were there. And dirty play, the SEC is renowned for low class fans and cheap shots. So, HogCountry, sit down there in LA ( you know where I am talking about), and after your finish getting your GED at age 45, and finish inbreeding your family, read a National Geographic and learn a little something about the rest of the country. Sorry to hear about the tornado that hit Andalusia, wiped out half the town and did about $5000 worth of damage

Now we know why Oklahoma is a “red” state–embarrassment.

Think of all the public school teachers you could hire, with Stoops $3 million plus–and with more results.

We don’t care about education–we’re think we’re big fish, but it’s a i small pond as the rest of the world cruises past in a new bass boat looking for an cheap catch.

“big game bob” never was. When we won the national championship we had an offensive coordinator and a defensive coordinator that could motivate players at bowl time. After mangini and Mike Stoops left Bob Stoops was on his own and that is not good enough. With Mike Stoops available to motivate players we would have beaten LSU and Florida for the title but I doubt if we would have beaten USC for the title. Bob Stoops bpwl game motivation “POOPS”

Bob Stoops to go to 4 National Championship games in 9 years would make any Division 1 Football program happy. There are 119 D-1 programs with 117 of them watching last nights game from their living rooms. Stoops makes more money than most D-1′s budget for their entire football programs so he can take their mouthy heat with a smile. Stoops continues to fill one of the countries best stadiums which seats sold out to crowds of over 85,000 for as long as he has been at OU. Why did Stoops OU teams loose, it is simple, they played USC, LSU, Florida at their peak seasons. So if only 2 go to the party and 117 get to watch, let’s get a grip and party with Stoops and be happy and grateful.

Mark Mosher or should I just call you Kleenex. The crying is amazing. You must have been watching a different game. “Pass interference”? pleaseeeeeeee!

OU is always the bully on the block in an average Big 12. The bully got punched in the mouth and didn’t respond. Hello Choklahoma!!!!!!!!!

Hey OU… you got your clock cleaned. You had the most prolific offense this year and yet only scoredd a mere 14 pts and 7pts half way through the 3rd quarter. Welcome to the SEC.

You people are a joke. The game was a good one, played by two good teams. Neither team dominated anything so the bragging should stop. Take a look at most of the teams in the country. How many have been to 7 BCS games in the last 10 years? How many of them have been in 4 championship games in that same period? How many coaches have an .826 winning percentage for the past 10 years? Oklahoma has the best coach in the country and you people bitch and want to get rid of him. WOW!!!!!!Get a life and be a true fan. You could be stuck with a lot worse.

Hey Berry and fellow Sooner Fans!

First off…..this is to all who think Stoops should go….Look yourselves in the mirror and you will see an idiot. Thats right… and I would tell each of you to your face…but save me the time and energy and let your mirror do the talking for you and for me. Stop being knot-heads.

OU has played in 4 national title games since 2000. Most other schools can’t say that. Do you know how hard it is to win ONE???…..no, you really don’t…because you aren’t coaching the Sooners.

Sure, things are frustrating and going into halftime with a 21-7 lead would have been nice. Yes, you could see the pattern and predict the possible outcomes. Hey, we, as fans, always have a 50-50 chance to be right. So do the players and coaches. They also second guess and want to win as badly as we do. We have the luxury of TV, our chairs and comfort….our beer. We can see instant replay and say ” I knew it!!!!” But did we really?….no. Go try and pick the lottery this weekend…bet you don’t win.

So be real. Stoops has done a great job and has us in position to win on very short cycles. We are in the game 50 percent of the time during his tenure. I am quite sure he would like to win them all as well….and at HOME?…his teams nearly do. What other team can say that?

So are we being realistic as fans? Expect a little too much? I am pretty sure a few of you are and need to check in with yourselves a bit more.

Stoops is one of the best in the game and we have great assistant coaches. Does anyone remember that Kevin Wilson got the Broyles award this year as the top assistant? That Venables is highly regarded each year and talked about for coaching positions at other schools seemingly every year? It is not because he is ordinary or bad…..whether you think so or not.

Stoops does it right…he doesn’t screw around with kids that are goofballs, he has high standards, gets a lot out of players that are sleepers (Sam Bradford, Jason White, Josh Heupel….to name a few) and he has the team in a place to compete for the Big 12 and national title all of the time. Virtually every year.

I am sure that those calling for Stoops to leave…or wanting him to are direct decendents of the crowd that wanted Bud to leave because he didn’t get that elusive, but very attainable, 48th win.

I get it.

On Fox: It is BS that they get these games….so pro-Florida….pro-Tebow. “If you spend 20 minutes with Tim Tebow..you can’t help but be a better person for it” (Tom Brennaman’s words) Really Tom? Is he the second coming or something? Then calling him one of the 5 best players of all time? Brennaman called like two games this year…. Does he really have a clue? For the money…they do a terrible job with these games. They should have to give back the rights, on principle alone.

Here is our skycam……jeezis

But they really do a poor job all around. Their analysts are awful as well. I want to hear from guys that do games all year…Danielson, Musburger, Franklin, Patrick and Herbie…and…James…etc. Guys that know something.

I am disappointed and wanted to win. I really dislike Florida, Meyer..and anything FLA. Tired of Timmy too. Way tired of his act.

Am proud of the program and players, coaches and all involved though. We will be back time and again. I mean, I am a Phillies fan as well….twice in 126 years so….7 national titles is pretty good and 4 trips in the last 8 years? C’mon.

To all of you Texas fans…….here is your day to get revenge….or at least feel vindicated……but apparently, you wouldn’t beat Tebow or Florida either (according to Fox, Brennaman, everyone at ESPN, and every Day After expert out there) and you would be 5 and we would be 4…..so enjoy it. You want to be like us so badly that your coach has to whine about it to anyone who will listen. So now you are ranked higher then us. Enjoy #4. That must be so huge for you.

On Tebow: Hey Timmy……you aren’t the only one God is looking out for….so enough with the “If we are blessed enough to win”….and “God Bless”. God (however you worship) probably has equal time for everyone. Not just you and the University of Florida football team. The act has worn thin already, even if you are doing circumcisions on your summer break. G@% D#@$ it.

I mean…..

We could be Oklahoma State fans…..when is the last time they made it to the dance…..or got an invite? We could be Iowa State or Auburn…Tim Tebow forbid. I mean God forbid. We could be Baylor or North Texas…..or anyone else who hasn’t been in the game…. We could be coached still by Gibbs or Blake or Howard. We could be coached by Bobby Petrino or Tommy Bowden or John L. Smith….or Rich Rodriguez. We could change coaches every other year…..

Yeah, we are doing all right.

We could have no Heisman winners….or we could and do have two winners and two other finalists in the last 8 years. How bout the All-Americans and position trophy winners? Or is that not quite enough for us either?

So we all need to get a grip…..fold our flags neatly…..put our Jersey’s away and wait for next season….when Bob Stoops and the Sooners will be right in the thick of it….beating Texas on the way……and competing for the Big 12 and the national title.

Boomer Sooner!

and

God Bless.

Jeff in Vermont….where it is below zero tonight.

I’m as disappointed as any Sooner fan, but realize OU is lucky to have Stoops as our coach and the players tried their best. They just could not make the plays they needed in order to win the game. I’m still sick in my stomach, but appreciate the great season OU had this year.

Note to Pete Carroll…….try traveling more than 11 miles from home in January. Try playing someone other than the Washington’s during the year…..

Your Bowl game is in your backyard every year. Your conference is too scared to play a championship game……too cheap and too greedy. Lets see how good you are after doing that! Least the SEC and ACC and Big 12 have the guts to do it….while you and your sister conference…the Big 11 won’t.

Didn’t you lose to Oregon State? In Corvalis?….like 2 of the last three trips? You can barely beat them. Oh…..thats right….you didn’t.

Your team looks and acts like a bunch of Rap video thugs. Rey should be up on charges for his little dance behind Erin. Nice bunch of kids that you have there.

Ya….I give credit where credit is due….but you are just as good as the best teams….but not better. That….you have to prove each week. but you, like Texass…..have figured out that the media will listen….and help you plead your case. You are like the Cowboys…and Jerry Jones….the more people hear about you….the better off you think you are. No matter what is going on. That is why you will have every lame actor in the business on your sideline. Tedious to see the gratuitous shots of those high priced losers stalking college co-eds and trying to be cool around the football team. Aren’t they suppose to be stars already, themselves? Get a life. Just goes to show you…..

“We can beat any team in the country”…..don’t you think all the bowl winners could make such a statement?

So go drown surfing, Pete…..and shut up. Talk is cheap and everything has a way of going around and coming around too. For you….that seems to happen in Corvalis. Good luck with that…..and next year….show some real balls and decline the Rose Bowl and play in say, Toronto……..just to see if your boys can handle being away and in the strip clubs and cold weather up there in Canada. Thugs……

Jeff in Vermont….I can handle Toronto

,.,m,

New BCS format: Take the Slack-10 champ, the Weak-10 champ, the Pass-Happy/No-D 12 champ, come up with one winner from some sort of playoff, then come face the SEC CHAMP!!!!

Why does Stoops eat his Cherrio’s on a plate?

Because if they were in a BOWL he would lose them!!

I’ve been watch OU football since 1962 when Bud was still there. I’ve seen good and bad seasons, good and bad coaches, and have been lucky enough to watch the Sooners win four national championships. Stoops is a great coach, but needs to take charge of his coaching staff. The players gave their all, but were clearly frustrated. Kevin Wilson needs to go. When you have an assistant coach (Kevin Sumlin) being hired as a head football coach (Houston) before the offensive coordinator is offered a head coaching job that should tell you something. Stoops is paid $3 mill a year, needs to grow some backbone and fire Kevin Wilson. It is unbelievable that he (Wilson) would stop using the “hurry up” offense. Changing the play 1,2 or 3 times before the snap was insane. And trying to cram Chris Brown into the endzone up the middle on 4th and goal was as lame a play call as I’ve ever witnessed. What about a field goal or if you’re hell bent on a score, how about a play action or bouncing Brown outside. Wilson has had his brilliant moments, but the problem is he doesn’t seem to have play-calling savy when in the big games. Our D was sensational. At least we demonstrated we can play D. However, Venables’ coaching is inconsistent. I wish we had the likes of Mike Stoops, Mangino and Leach back. We are due some assistant coaching staff changes.

Well another Bowl game has passed us by and OU lost again. Its ok sooner nation we will be back. We gave FU all they could handle just wasn’t good enough. Nontheless, we all had a good time on the beach and at the clubs, so the trip wasn’t a total waste. Think of the other teams who did not make it to the big dance, but would give their left hand for such a trip. Be greatful, sooner fans that we got to the game first of all, lets not be sore loosers.

Now for the ones of us who think that FU was so much better I truly beg to differ. If ever a team was let off the hook it happened last night. Most teams can score from the 1or 2 yard line, and if you can,t you dont deserve to win a game. Lets face it FU d-fense was very angry when OU marched down the field on them to tie the game at 14 all. It should have been 21-7 at half- time. Which would have changed the whole game plan of FU, but OU coaches decides to run the ball on a slant and run a slow-tempo , give me a break FU’s right side is weaker than a wet paper towel. Yet they still tried to run a slant to the left side. I say we get once head coach John Blake back as director of recruiting, this guy is an excellent recruiter if you dont beleive me look back at the 2000 national championship game and see. If that isnt enough take alook at North Carolina’s recruiting class this year. I can’t beleive Big Game Bob doenst have ties still in the state of Florida. We have to get the fastest and best players available. Its time to get rid of all those fat cat coaches except stoops,,,,,,,,Heck we let TU bring in one the best defensive minded coaches ever in Will Muschamp and see what he did to us.

Never heard such over the top whinning or excuses. Florida played great defense. There were bad calls on both side. At least as many bad calls against Gators as Sooners. And if Demarco had been in the game, and had scored a couple of touch downs, the Tebow with have simply willed the gators to score a couple me to. That is what winners do. You clearly are what whinners do.

Berry,

I have lived in CA,TX and FL. One thing they all have in common is when people find out you are from Oklahoma is they always ask “how does OU always have such a great football program. Great leadership to hire great coaches like Bob Stoops. If you have 119 D-1 college football programs and Bob takes the OU team to 4 championship games in 9 years while 117 of the D-1′s set at home wishing and watching they were playing in the game……Bob is the man.

Now here is what drives the big states nuts when little old Oklahoma does so well with only a population of 3.6 million. Below is from the websites of the top 4 college programs 99 listed roster for Oklahoma, USC, Florida and Texas…………

School……….state population……the number of out-of-state players recruited……………..% of out-of-state players

Oklahoma 3.6 million 82 out-of-state players……….99 total players = 82% out-of-state players

Florida 18 million 29 ” ” 99 29%
USC 35.5 million 18 ” ” 99 18%
Texas 23.5 million 7 ” ” 99 7%

I think anyone who is giving Stoops a hard time needs to realize what he has to do to come up with a team. If Oklahoma (OU) is only 18% Oklahomans we Oklahomans need to thank brother Bob for bringing the 82% out-of-state players to Oklahoma on his recruiting talents.

I think most truly die-hard Sooner fans know what an outstanding coach Bob Stoops is. He is a man of the utmost integrity and always handles himself in a professional manner (with media interviews, etc.). Also, without a doubt, he is one of the best coaches ever at OU and we absolutely, positively, want him to stick around and try to win that elusive 8th National Championship. My main issue is with his salary.

Year in and year out, he keeps getting huge pay raises and bonuses but yet continues to lose BCS bowl games. Why is this? In the world of business, if you have a corporate leader that is knocking down a “Stoops-like” salary and they fail to deliver the big deals/produce corporate gains 5 years in a row, what do you think would happen? Failure, time after time, should neve be rewarded so richly.

Yes, I know that it is an accomplishment to have won so many Big 12 Championships but on a “national” perspective of things, it is not really all that impressive. It all comes down to is winning National Championships period! We have not done that for 9 years now and realistically, I can’t see us winning one again because nothing in the coaching philosopy at OU has changed. Bob seems incapable of making the changes necessary to win. For example, Brent Venables should have been fired a very long time ago.

I’ve been an ultra hard-core Sooner fan all of my life but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realize that as of the last decade, the OU has not been that impressive beyond the Big 12 Championship game. We seem to rule the Big 12 but get that “deer in the headlights” mentality when we get on a national stage like the BCS title game. Just look at the shellacking we took against USC, LSU, West Va and Boise State for crying out loud! Also, the Big 12 Conference has not been that strong since the “hey day of the Sooners and Cornhuskers.”
All I’m asking for is for Bob to truly earn his pay and fix it. I will give him credit though, we were at least in last night’s game and didn’t get blown out. But, still, loss number 5 is really hard to swallow.

Still a Sooner fan and always will be. Better luck next year! Who does that sound like?

I think you all over-estimate the national laughingstock business. Ohio State did not win their conference but still made a BCS bowl. There are tiers for football programs, and the top-tier belongs to USC and Florida. Texas could sneak in there, but, inexplicably, have not yet.

OU is in the second tier — a good place to be for a school from a small state (even one with a great football tradition). Why would any star player from, say, Atlanta would want to move to Norman over LA or Florida? So OU recruits about as well as anyone in their position could. They also play about as well as anyone could. In most of the country, people are amaze that a team from a two-bit state like Oklahoma (no offense intended) can win so many games. So while Oklahoma has many reasons for low self-esteem (why did all you people vote for McCain anyway? and steal the Sonics?), your football teams are not one of them.

My question is whether the mix of recruits between offense and defense is right. Since 2002, it seems that OU has a depth problem on the DL and intermittent coverage problems. Is it the coaching or the raw material? I suspect the latter. If Stoops wants to go back to being an innovator, perhaps he should recruit a disproportionate number of defensive guys and fill out the offense as he can. He may not score as many points, and he may lose a few more to lesser teams, but defense wins big games. It’s what won the games when “Big Game Bob” was not an insult.

From the looks of this year’s recruiting class, it looks like Stoops is one step ahead of me. It looks like a defensive class. A couple of years of that, and perhaps OU will win one of these BCS championships 13-2.
