Did Mack Brown deserve Big 12 coaching honors?
The coaches all-Big 12 football team was interesting on two fronts, and I’m not even counting the goofy format of the team.
Thirty spots and 29 players on first team? Six offensive linemen, but not Jon Cooper, the team’s offensive lineman of the year? OU fullback Matt Clapp, a part-time player, on first team? The format is a joke, a monument to indecision.
But forget that. The team is fascinating for two decisions the coaches did make.
1. Quarterback. OU’s Sam Bradford was first team and offensive player of the year. Isn’t that clearly a Heisman Trophy referendum? Bradford’s chief rivals for the most treasured hardware in sports appear to be Florida QB Tim Tebow and Texas QB Colt McCoy. The Big 12 coaches have stated their case on Bradford and McCoy.
2. OU’s Bob Stoops and Tech’s Mike Leach were voted co-coaches of the year. Huh? How could the coaches possibly not include Texas’ Mack Brown in that group, if not elevate him to solo status as coach of the year? UT in the preseason was picked second in the South, but the ‘Horns were considered a lot closer to the pack than they were to the favored Sooners.
Texas was 11th in the AP preseason poll, one spot ahead of Tech, and well behind OU and Missouri. From third in the Big 12 pecking order to third in the current BCS, yet Brown gets no love from his colleagues.
And the coaches all-Big 12 team further proves Brown’s coaching job this year. OU had nine first-team selections. Texas had four.
The Big 12 coaches sent a clear message about Mack Brown. I’m not sure what that message is, but it’s disappointing. Mack Brown and staff have done a better coaching job than Stoops and staff in 2008. The evidence is clear.

I wish all ok & . tex fans would quit crying we are sooners please we have gone thru hell to get where we are at as a state please we didn’t have to to steal land from indians & mex we gave our people a chance to get some feedom at at free life get over it we all suffered to become a great nation we have to live by our nations laws or get the hell out of this great beautiful land
That is what happens when you whine on prime time! He embarrassed the rest of the Big XII coaches. I believe Bob got the Co nod not only for a superb job this year but because he was classy enough not to go on Prime Time and whine.
Who played the harder schedule? OU clearly had the harder schedule. Who had the toughest road game between OU and TU? OU did. It’s easier to coach against lesser teams and easier to win big games at home. Stoops lost his best defensive player this year and still managed to get his team to the BIG 12 Championship. It is obvious that Stoops coached better this year. Tramel doesn’t use his brain very often.
Mack Brown is a classless wine bag! Stop sucking up to him Trammel. Geez he doesn’t even read your stories…
I honestly think the Big 12 coaches did not consider Mack Brown as “Coach of the Year” because of all the politics and profiling he did for his team. While I understand the basis for his actions, I do not think his clear “advertising” on radio and TV did anything but hurt him with the Big 12 coaches.
It must be politics, because Brown, Muschamp and Davis clearly outcoached OU in 45-35 and throughout the season. OU’s talent is, on offense at least, vastly superior to Texas and more experienced to boot. Perhaps the reason why OU is in the CG is because it is obvious to everyone that Bradford, Gresham, Gerald McCoy et al are pro level players. But despite that talent, Texas should be in the championship. Used to be that Stoops could take his players and beat Texas and probably take Texas’ players and beat OU. Two years ago (arguably) and this year (for sure), OU had better players and lost. I doubt Stoops has gotten worse, just that Mack has improved. Next year, Stoops will have the chance to return the favor.
I’ve always thought Mr. Tramel looks drunker than Mack Brown’s cousin Cooter in that pic at the top of the page. His justification of why Mack should be Coach of the Year only confirms what I’ve always thought.
Nathan the douche bag, Kevin Wilson did get a an award. My point was that Borwn didn’t do squat to the earn the award. Bob Stoops did, so did Wilson, and Muschamp shoud get one as well. I have Mack’s award somewhere, I think it is my truck under the seat or something like that. BTW my truck and I are going to KC. Mack ain’t going and he’s not invited either. Maybe he can watch the game at your house.
The reason Bob Stoops is more respected, has more former assistants that are head coaches and is generally more well liked than Mack Brown is simple - character. My dad was born and bred in Oklahoma. Lived throught the Dust Bowl and served in two wars. The only that mattered to him was a man’s character. That’s what I learned from my dad and from his saving his whole life so I could go to OU. And that’s what I learned at OU. I’m not a brain surgeon but from what I’ve learned in my life - Mack Brown’s words and university spoke volumes about his character through their actions. Stoops was the one politicking and whining about the BCS before the Bedlam game and after the game. It won’t matter. He and Oklahoma University will surely blow whatever bowl game they end up in.

Mack deserves credit for his record despite having fewer All-Big 12 honorees? Why? Is it not a testament to the coach when he has more players present? In fact this has been a knock on Mack for the longest time–that he couldn’t develop talent.
I’m no OSU fan, but Gundy did a darn fine job this year.

Berry, I’m not sure I buy your argument that Mack did a better job coaching. Personally, I would hand it to Leach based on the fact he forged an identical 11-1 record as OU and UT but he did it with far fewer resources than the big boys. But if it comes down to Stoops vs. Mack, I give it to Stoops because of the superior job the OU offensive coaches (Kevin Wilson) did installing the no-huddle and immediately making it the best offense in the country.
Does Trammel have a personal vendetta against Stoops? We’re on our 3rd middle LB and are playing for the Big 12 championship. Also didn’t agree with his article about a week ago that Texas was more deserving since they had won head to head.
All I can say is look at ESPN’s poll, the entire nation thinks Texas should be in the game instead of OU. I’ll put it this way, if it was a presidential election, Texas would win the electoral college 521-17, that makes OU the Ralph Nader..And Brown being political? Please, I can’t count how many comments I’ve read about Stoops constantly stating how much he beat TT and OSU by, when anyone that watched the game knows it was a 3 pt. game with 7 minutes left and then OU got lucky twice with a fumble, and then OU scores with :20 seconds left just to run up the score, talk about class…joke. That’s why OU is called Joklahoma, or Choklahoma, they embarass the Big XII, they can’t win a bowl game. OU could beat Texas for the next 19 years straight and Texas would still have bragging rights over OU, that’s how bad Texas owns OU. All of OU’s players are from Texas anyway, that is, the leftovers that can’t go to Texas…
Keep writing us off in the BCS games, cause the scary thought is OU is due a win and someone’s team is gonna get their teeth kicked in by OU Sooner or later and pray it’s not your team!!!!

Why is it that, it seems like Mack Brown is the College Football savior and everybody bows to him? Yes, he did a good job as the coaches that won the award, maybe it is his whinning all the time about something. Sorta like a little brother that goes and cried to MOMMY when they do not get what they want. Has he ever accepted anything and NOT CRIED about it when things didn’t go his way? I have and am still losing resepect for this Coach everyday.
You know every football team in America can and will have a bad game and some survive and some do not, correct? That being the case then, the season record should over shadow a HEAD TO HEAD contest. So why is it that UT victory over OU is MORE important than TTU victory over UT? Are they NOT equal? WHY is USC, Penn St. and Florida even in the TOP 10 when they lost to UNRANKED teams? HUMAN VOTERS are so BIASED and UNKNOWLEDGEABLE it is UNBELEIVEABLE.
The only people in this planet who believe ou is better than TEXAS are people in oklahoma. That being said,it doesn`t really matter. Neither TEXAS or ou would come close to beating the GATORS, although TEXAS would have made it a real game. Now that ou has backdoored its way into the NC game, it will only come away with its new tradition of getting spanked hard in the Bowl season GATORS 77 - UO 6. You call UT and it’s coaching staff classless and OU and it’s coaches the perfect example. Both coaching staffs did the exact same thing, lest we forget Bob Stoops kicked it all off right after the Tech game…”If your gonna put Texas ahead of us, then you have to put Tech ahead of Texas”…remember that gem? By the way, if Mack is so much more inferior to Stoops, then why is Mack currently the coach with the longest streak of 10-win seasons? Stoops can have his crappy BigXII coach-of-the-year award, Mack deserves the coach-of-the-decade.
If Texas was rated ahead of Tech and had more first team all Big 12 members than Tech, would your logic make Mike Leach the coach of the year? Your reasoning seems inconsistent.
Mack Brown is NOT A COACH! He is a CEO and recruiter. He is not involved with any defensive or offensive plays/schemes. He is a figurehead, a politician. He has the best recruits in the country! He has $900,000 assistant coaches. He is a joke. No where close to big 12 coach of the year.
Mack clearly had the best coaching job this year. And whining?? 45-35 baby! It was clearly a two team conversation at the end of the season between TX/OU and lets see here..who beat who now?? Texas beat Oklahoma on a neutral field. The humans that watch and care about college football agree, by voting Texas number two. Texas had one of the toughest stretches in recent memory by playing 4 top 11 opponents in a row, and ended up losing the last game on a freak play with 1 second left. OU has no defense and will get trounced by Florida in the Nat’l Championship(if you want a preview of this watch the USC/OU game from 2003).

I don’t get Trammel, who has great writing skills, but his opinions too often appear grounded in subjective personal bias as opposed to good reasoning. That showed up in his attacking Gundy for taking on Carlson, a fellow reporter. That was obviously a how dare you criticize a journalist. Only journalist have an inalienable right to criticize, and to be criticized is blasphemous.

Your coach ran up the score on both Tech and OSU while our best player and Heisman candidate was out for over 11 minutes of our final game of the season and you have the nerve to call Mack classless and try and defend what your coach has done? Did it occur to you numb nuts that everyone had done the math by that point and Stoops didn’t need to go campaign for his team on national TV? I can’t tell you how many articles I read that last week basically saying the numbers indicated OU would get the nod simply by beating OSU. What do you expect Mack to do, lay down and not fight for his University? Sorry but when you get paid 7 figures, you go out and you fight for your school. Your coach would of and has done the same thing. You recall he had already done that after the Tech game so quit pretending he refused every camera and mic put in his face.
I truly feel sorry for anyone who calls Mack Brown classless cause he is the epitome of class and we’re proud to have him represent our University. Keep Stoops for all I care, someone has to offer Texas high school football players sweet jobs at Lexus dealerships to get them to Oklahoma don’t they?
Plus, at the end of the day, you’re still in Oklahoma…and we’re in one of the coolest cities in the country. I win.
While agree with the other longhorns that UT should be in KC this weekend and Mack should have the Big XII award, I think we should just stop talking about it. We won…on the football field…where it matters. Let the OU fans name call and celebrate. Just sit back quietly and remind yourself, we won, and we sure as hell don’t have to live in Oklahoma–the land of trailer parks and tornadoes.

Stoops didn’t need to “get out the vote” everyone had done the math and knew the call. He did keep repeating “we’ll state our case on the field” indicating the head to head case was not “logical” as he said it would then be logical to put texas tech ahead of texas, but enough of that
the fact of the matter is, Oklahoma managed to base a trip to the NC on win over texas tech, now thats a joke. for anyone who follows big 12 football, texas tech is a fluke this year - a once in a lifetime kinda thing and for stoops to go around acting like his team actually accomplished something by beating “back to back” games of tech and os who….what a joke

Adrian Peterson, is no leftover. As a former UT player, I would be ashamed to show my face to my Texas friends and family, if I had left this Great State to play for ou. Adrian should be banished forever from Texas for his actions.
Adrian Peterson went to OU to win a national championship (he says). But something funny happened: OU got trounced by a USC team in 2005, but Texas beat USC in the national championship one year later. Tramel’s right. If you want to go by something objective, look at how the team performed in comparison to their preseason rankings. Using that metric, the coaches who overperformed in the Big 12 year were Leach, Van Gundy, and Brown. Probably in that order, too.
Yeah, Big Game Bob has so much class and character that he shows a recruit game film of his dead brother. Only Mangino had the decency to realize what was being shown and turn the film off. Stay classy Bob.

I know the Coach of the Year award is for the head coach, but without Wil Muschamp ol’ Mack Brown wouldn’t even be close and UT would have stayed 11th in the polls. Muschamp made all of the difference in UT’s program this year. Give Mack only the credit he deserves, hiring Wil Muschamp.
