Hoax man seems pitiful
One of my big bosses, Kelly Dyer Fry, vice president of news and information at OPUBCO, actually talked to James W. Conradt first. Our executives were none too pleased that our website template was lifted by Conradt to perpetrate his Internet hoax Wednesday that claimed Sam Bradford and Landry Jones were arrested on cocaine distribution charges.
We tracked down Conradt as the culprit. I don’t know how they did it, but I guess you can find out most anything. Anyway, Fry called Conradt, ready to reem him out, but she didn’t do it. We talked a few minutes later and she suggested I call him, too, for the story I wrote. Conradt struck me the same way he struck Fry.
Pathetic. Pitiful. I almost felt sorry for the guy. Heck, I did feel sorry for the guy. He came across as a 36-year-old teenager who had no idea what he had just done. No idea how his life is about to change. He seemed naive beyond belief.
I don’t know what the guy does for a living — I should have asked him; but I did ask him if he’s related to Texas women’s basketball legend Jody Conradt (he’s not) – but he comes across as a computer geek who lives in a cyber world, talking smack with other college football fans who have left the real world to live in a society that’s all keyboard and screen.
Conradt’s life becomes hell today, when the army of OU football fans conspire to deal him misery. Remember when Mike Lupica had the audacity to question Bob Stoops after OU’s 77-0 rout of Texas A&M in 2003? Well, Lupica himself cried uncle after Sooner fans crashed his web site. This is a brash New York City writer, with a huge press organization (New York Daily News) and ESPN behind him, with decades of experience of dishing it out and receiving it back. And even he was appalled at the onslaught of outrage from Sooner Nation.
This Conradt character stands alone, no power, no experience, no clue. Just a guy in a room in Texas who forgot that there’s a real world out there, even if he doesn’t choose to live in it. I can’t imagine what his day is like today.
I have one request for OU fans. Show some mercy. Cut the guy some slack. No, he doesn’t deserve it. But this is a guy whose life could be ruined. He needed to be taught a lesson, but just talking with him, I think he’s learned it.

I have for the most part always respected Nebraska football and Nebraska football fans and usually had a strong dislike for anything coming out of Austin TX. Maybe this guy has had too much of the Burnt Orange stuff from Austin rub off on him. My comments are that neither Sam or Landry has done anything wrong and that the entire nation needs to understand that point. Stuff like what this guy did seems to in the end have a derogatory effect on the state of Oklahoma no matter what the real outcome of the situation actually happens to be. I might feel sorry for him, but not too much considering that he brought it on himself.
I’ve got to agree with Tram on this one. It appears this guy has an apparent juvenile side that he’s having a hard time letting go of. I assume the guy was just trying to get some OU posters on his message board all fired up, knowing that all you’d have to do is a little research to find out it wasn’t true. Not like the guy drove to Norman, planted some cocaine in their dorm room and called the cops. Alas, still idiotic and school age behavior for a 36 yr old who should know better. Wonder which will carry the heavier fine/penalty? Extracting a template from The Oklahoman and forging this story under its name or the slander case brought forth by OU, the players and their families.
And Tram, this guy might get a little slack because he’s a NU fan, had this hoax been generated by a UT fan (in Austin), I’m afraid your plea would fall on many deaf ears. In fact, (unfortunately) I’m quite certain many death threats would have been involved.
Let me preface this by saying I am a die hard Sooner fan, former OU student, I hold 4 season tickets to OU, and am a long time member of the Sooner Club. Now, with that said……….It is funny how times have changed. In the past people would have looked at this as a great prank/hoax. However, our society has become soft and nobody can take a joke anymore so this guy will soon find th ewrath of the DOK and Mr. Jones coming down on him. I love a good prank. I loved the prank Yale pulled on Harvard in 2004 http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/sioncampus/07/19/college.pranks/index.html but when this was copied recently by a highschool student he was expelled. Where has society gone that we can’t pull a prank and laugh about it? Lighten up people. It’s not like the guy made a call to a police station and they busted down Sam’s or Landry’s door. No harm, no foul. And don’t give me this tarnished reputation crap because everyone would have learned the truth and then had a laugh about it, especially when we stomp Nebraska again the next time we meet.
Well, what did the guy post?
Some of us out here in the hinterlands don’t have access to what the guy posted.
Was it a parody or something devious? I have a great Nebraska neighbor across the street and was hoping for something we could discuss or laugh about. What the heck was it?
Fwiw, I’ve never met a “nice” NU fan. They talk a good game, but in private, every single one I’ve met absolutely despises the Sooners. They are, my friends, the Longhorns of the North (without any success, etc).
Feel free to rag this moron all you want. He asked for it.
Nice to see Barry has a heart. I see your point about taking pity on this pitiful soul.
Now kindly step aside.
Never met a nice NU fan? They talk a good game, BUT…
Truer words were never written…I have been living amongst the Red Horde now for almost 20 years…as long as ‘your team’ just goes in, rolls over and loses, all is wonderful.
Have the audacity, temerity to actually support a team that beats the Skers? Now you get the chance to really see the true ‘colors’ of the Sker fans…and it ain’t pretty.
Actually, don’t think the guy who perpetrated the hoax should be cut any slack…
I agree with Jeff. I too am a diehard Sooner fan. But I love a good joke as well. Now I don’t think this one was very tasteful, but come on. These people that are screaming “law suit!” and “punish him to the fullest extent!”..are for a lack of better words are “ridiculous and a bit immature themselves”. They obviously don’t understand the law. For any real criminal or civil punishment to be dealt out..significant monetary, mental, or physical damage must be demonstrated. None of which I believe occured here. We are becoming a “wussified” society and the reactions of some people to this hoax…again as distasteful as it may be. is perpetuating that wussification.
I think the Oklahoma should sue him for copyright infringement. Other than that, ban him from the OU/NU game. haha!
It was a joke people. Just a joke. There was no malice here. I think this is a sad day when political correctness has run such amok that we can’t even make fun of rival schools. How many great farks have I seen of the Longhorns? OU fans are some of the best farkers in the world, and they should be proud of that, not afraid of that due to possible litigation. What about the OU fans at the Big XII Championship game that had the funny signs about Chase Daniels and his eating habits? Can they be sued for defamation now too? Everyone needs to relax and learn to take a joke.
I thought it was funny. I feel more sorry for the radio stations in Texas that reported the story than I do the guy who wrote it. How pathetic is their reporting?
And nice NU fans do to exist. I met some very nice ones after we beat them in Lincoln in 2005. Sure we got flipped off by a couple of them, but I’ve been to every stadium in the Big 12 except CU, and they were the most polite opposing fans I’ve ever met.
Chris,
Making fun of someone for eating their boogers (Chase Daniel), which they were on TV doing, (they even showed it on sportscenter) is completely different than making up a story about two guys getting caught doing cocaine and slapping a stolen news website header on it. Sorry guy, but your comparing apples to oranges. One is a complete a total fabrication of law breaking and the other is making fun a guy for eating his boogers. Does this really need to be explained to you?
Also to the people saying others need to learn to take a joke, that just shows that you are the kind of r-e-t-a-r-d that would do this as well. If you were a parent and someone was spreading lies on fake news stories that your son was busted with cocaine, which could jeoprodize his career as a collegiate or possible professional athelete, you might get upset too. If you wouldn’t, please don’t ever have children. The world will be a better place for it.
This is also a glaring example of why you don’t listen to nerds on message boards. They are total losers who live online and post under anonymous screen names talking mess on all the jocks to get back at them for giving them wedgies in high school… (now thats a funny joke people)
Brian,
Sorry, it is the same thing. You just don’t like one of them and the First Amendment does not only protect speech that Brian approves. Both were clearly humorous and just because you don’t think it is funny, it is still protected speech. If we followed your thoughts about “free” speech, people could sue every comedian, every parody show (SNL, Dave Chappell, South Park) and every football fan that says anything that offends someone.
Go lookup the famous Hustler vs. Fallwell ruling.
This was obviously a joke and therefore protected speech thanks to our rather awesome Constitution. It is really sad how people are so willing to give up their freedoms these days.
Best they could do to this guys is get him on copyright infringement, which anyone that has ever recorded a football game is in equal violation of.
Hey, is this place a “peep show” too?
Berry, I generally like your writing, but your “message board” video that I just watched was waaaay out of line. Lots of good people, including some of your colleagues, participate in such things as message boards, so I guess that makes them “part of the problem,” as defined by you. You should take that one back.
Doug Loudenback
Brian,
Get a grip…If it was that easy to ruin people, I’d have you committed by letting a psychiatrist read your post and have you committed for being an idiot. Not even the goofball that fabricated this hoax truly believed it would result in actually j-e-o-p-a-r-d-i-z-i-n-g (that’s how you spell jeopardy or in your dictionary jeoprody) anyone’s career. You probably want everyone to get trophies and to ban dodgeball.
Berry,
I enjoy the overwhelming majority of the stuff that you produce, however I have to disagree with your take on message board users. You shouldn’t be the only one able to post your opinion for the masses to read. Now, while I admit that the majority of those that frequent these boards come off with some seriously moronic ideas and opinions, there are those who are more responsible in what they post, and shouldn’t be lumped into the same category with everyone else.
Boomer!!
Patrick
Dear Berry Tramel,
This is Anonymous.
You’ve seemed to misunderstand the the reason for James Conradt’s action in what he did on the internets. What he did was all for the lulz. It is no different then what Anonymous has done in the past with everyday ordinary people like yourself. James Conradt is only guilty from being what is deep down inside all of us.

We are Anonymous
We are everyone and no one
We ruin the lives of everyone
We are legion
We do not forgive
We do not forget
Expect us!
Barry,
Your commentary on bulletin board subscribers couldn’t be anymore wrong. What is the difference between bulletin boards and this blog you operate. I can hide from other users under any name that I perfer and post whatever I please. Yes, you moderate it, but so do the better boards. The board I frequent had this nailed as a hoax within minutes. Tell me, what real damage was done to OU or the Oklahoman?
You say OU doesn’t like boards because it makes it difficult to run a “dignified” program, but it was on a bulletin board that the Big Red Auto scam was first uncovered.
How quickly we forget. Yes, Conradt was 100% wrong, but let’s not throw out the baby with the bathwater. OU has more to worry about than some geek having a little fun. After all aren’t the wrestling, gymnastics, basketball and football program all under probation at this fine “dignified” athletic department?
Just for the record, not ALL us Nebraska fans are haters of OU. Although I used to be when I was younger, I have nothing but respect for the Sooners now. And I miss our annual meetings. That was what the whole year was based on back then. If you could beat OU, or if OU could beat NU, that was your year.
And the joke was in bad taste. But rest assured, there are NU fans here in Nebraska that like OU too. I will be routing for them to beat the snot out of the Gators! And I will be wearing my Oklahoma hat and my Nebraska sweatshirt while I’m watching. Boomer Sooner. And I am sorry for the others that hate. That is not good sportsmanship.

Even though I chide you some time, I always knew/know that you are a guy with a heart and a good guy! Sincerly!!
You are right, this guy will pay for his mistake, probably more than he ever thought this joke would cost him.
